I’m becoming more and more displeased with Barbara as the series progresses. I actually don’t think she “gets” Bond. Might be a controversial statement but it’s what I really feel as a fan.

I’m seriously thinking of not going.

    Would be silly to skip

Unfortunately I am considering the same, and I even pre-ordered tickets. Might cancel those. If I'm going to hate it as much as I think I'm going to hate it, I'd be more mad at the fact I wasted a trip out and risked being exposed to covid over something I ended up absolutely hating. I'm in the south where masks are politicized to an extreme and rare to see in public spaces.

If I'm going to hate it, I'd rather hate it for a cheaper price in the safety of my living room and wait till digital.

I’ve already given mine to friends. I just don’t want to see that. I don’t care how good it is, I don’t want to see that happen.

Same here, even if it is kind of a popular trendy thing in films these days. Been looking at YouTube reviews so far no spoilers, and mostly positive reviews.

Let me make my case for why you should see the film simply this, then: I don't think there has ever been a film that addresses the character of James Bond so thoroughly nor one that "gets" Bond to the extent that this one does, and I'm including Casino Royale when I say that.

And then pulls the most un-Fleming thing I've ever heard of in this run. I honestly think it's great some people are enjoying it but yeah - that one little spoiler ruined everything for me. That's not Bond to me. I want escapism.

At the very least it’s not going to get repeat viewings from a lot of the fans. It might even deter some of the regular cinema goers.

    Very true.

Whatever it is, how bad, silly, stupid etc is it ?

I'm surprised there haven't been any Bond Experience, Dyson or JBR reaction videos posted yet.

    Its utterly ridiculous.
Having that death occur simply to then have James Bond Will Return in the credits to cap it all off ruins the entire emotional stake they were apparently aiming for. It's counterintuitive and thats just for a start. I don't know whats worse. The irony or the intention.

    Perhaps......
It's done in such a way to make the codename theory officially canon.?

    Another thing that troubles me..............
If Bond is truly killed off and it's not a cliffhanger leading into the next film, then does this film intend to erase the memory of the pre-Craig Bonds? Obviously OHMSS can't exist in this universe and so forth.
    Which timeline is canon then?

I take it you don’t like a certain Fleming title? Because Fleming actually did what you seem to think is crossing the line.

Can’t all timelines be canon? There’s like dozens of them in the Gundam franchise, and neither invalidate each other. Heck, we already regard the films, novels, comics, etc as existing in their own timelines.

The only part that bothers me is...
Once again, EON has copied old tropes. This is basically LOGAN. Right?

It's my understanding that Fleming left it (FRWL) intentionally ambiguous so that he could go that route if he were to decide to; in other words, leave himself an out.

Personally, I am more than fine with ambiguous.

    Agreed.

Just seems odd to officially kill him off then have a "James Bond Will Return" title card unless the next film specifically explains his resurrection. That scenario seems unlikely. He's not Dracula, where you can have the sun disintegrate John Carradine and he turns up in the sequel unexplained. The whole different timeline excuse seems like a cop out.

I've seen it. I won't do a full review yet, but regarding the larger issue in discussion:

It's surreal how well the ending works in the context of the film. Because it's not careless. It's not done for shock. It is earned. It is perhaps one of the most earned major plot twists in the history of franchise films, ranking up there with Darth Vader's reveal.

And that's an ambitious thing to shoot for. Especially nowadays, with audiences this jaded and cinematic storytelling this oversaturated with "epic twists."

But they aim for it, and they nail it. The overwhelming emotion of the final act works for me because of the builds leading up to it. The film is a pure crowd-pleasing joy to watch, and the entire finale sequence once they reach Safin's island is pretty much nonstop tension and actions.

Zimmer's score is superb. Always appropriate.

And the action scenes, honestly, are the best of Craig's tenure without question. The way they're staged, shot, edited. We're talking M:I-Fallout levels of competition here which arguably take the crown back at times just for the sheer Bond style of it.

Absolutely do not discount this film just because you've spoiled it by reading a text version of the plot on the internet. Never before has there been a Bond film like this that needs to be experienced to be appreciated, and never before has one delivered something so memorable and moving.

Just my two cents as an initial reaction.

Is it? The whole book leads up to that moment and cuts off right as he drops. If Fleming had decided not to write any more, that would have been a hell of a book to end it all. He even felt he needed to overexplain HOW he got out of that before proceeding further to the plot at hand.

    Seconded.

I'm tired of realistic depression on my screen in every franchise I watch. Where's the fun escapism of past Bond's?

What happens during the incredible “Final Ascent” track?

Do we get a funeral? Frankly, I don’t mind at all the his Bond gets this end. He’s had the most unique, celebrated tenure. It sounds like it provides a real catharsis and has a lot of people realizing just how much they love the character. I’m more than fine with this!

I've had a very difficult year, and don't need to see a downer Bond film right now either. Maybe rent it on Redbox, but I 'm thinking just wait a few years and catch up with it then.

It’s ironic that 00s have a very short life expectancy, but it’s not something many want to acknowledge is a possibility for a specific character.

Honestly, I’m even more excited because I always commend EON when they break formula.

I'm all for breaking formula, I just see it as an extreme.
