I had SP at 23, then went back the next night and it fell to 24 where it has stayed since.

I think SP topped out at 18 for me, and then slid just a bit. I do agree that most folks had it very high upon initial release.

I remember one podcast I listened to *raving* about it, and then 4 years later they would reference it as a "disappointment." IIRC.

edit: By "just a bit" I should've said "is now at the bottom of my list." I am planning to give it an honest-to-God rewatch with the best intentions.
  • I strongly disliked Spectre when I saw it in theaters and when I last revisited it it was pretty much exactly the same thing. Maybe I’ll finally start to enjoy it when I revisit it yet again ahead of NTTD. Either way, love or hate, my first experience in a theater is usually very close to what I end up settling on, so I’m not worried about having a honeymoon glow for NTTD, as far as my own opinion is concerned.

I don't know. I'd like to take it at face value, but remember how SP made almost every Top Ten (or better) upon immediate release.

SP sticked on mine. Not top 5 obviously.

Interesting we’ve only had a couple early NTTD rankings so far despite many more having seen it. Knowing what I know though, maybe it’s because how different it is and the time needed to process and compare.

    Here's the final DN-SP rankings:

This time around it's about 50/50 Bond Forums / Other sites, whereas pre-Spectre most rankings are from Bond forums. There's a few films viewed more, or less, favourable by Bond fans vs general fans that show up in the separate lists (note the films highlighted in red and purple

    U6bBtQt.jpg
    UTxz1hu.jpg

    A few thoughts:
    - Some circles in the Bond community say GE and QOS are over and under rated respectively, and that is not insignificantly reflected in the difference in rank compared to the general community.
    - GF, long and still a general public fan favourite, is beaten by CR by a reasonable margin. I wonder if the woke era has caught up to it. So far I haven't seen widespread evidence of this, but the conversations are happening
    - OHMSS is now the Bond community favourite, by a narrow margin
    - Skyfall has dropped a few spots in the Bond community, but still a firm favourite in the general community

Probably not going to put NTTD in my ranking until I watch it again, or even until its released on bluray, as I find watching them in the comfort of your own home a different experience, and I'm hoping it will be more positive than my first viewing!!

@w2bond "I wonder if the woke era has caught up to it." What do you mean by this? I assume you mean when he forces himself on Pussy in the barn? I feel like "wokeness" isn't necessary to see how awful that scene is.

I love that film, but nobody I know watches that scene and doesn't grimace at the least. It mars the film. It doesn't have to sour the entire experience, but that is undoubtedly a difficult scene of what amounts to basically rape.

edit: In case you think I'm trying to "cancel" GF - it last ranked like 4th or 5th on my list. I adore it.

Fair call. But these days I see more reviews discussing that scene. But so far, as evidenced by your rating and the general consensus, it hasn't hurt opinion of it (tho I see the odd review that ranks gf - and frwl of all films - low because of the treatment of women)

You are seeing it through a modern, post-"Me Too" lens. Yes perhaps he goes a bit too far, but they are playfighting. She doesn't literally tell him to "STOP" in the moment. She may have been playing hard to get.

I understand that this wouldn't fly today, but you are seeing it from a "today" perspective. Nowadays you can't even flirt in a work setting lest you risk losing your job, nowadays "Baby It's Cold Outside" is seen as a rape song. I wouldn't say today's views on this kind of thing are objective.

I have several issues with Goldfinger writing and pacing and "excitement" wise that factor into it being around the exact center of my ranking, but that scene definitely allows GoldenEye at the very least to edge it out for me.

@Bond They were absolutely playfighting or whatever, but what comes after is absolutely sexual assault. She didn't scream stop but she was struggling. Lol. That's like saying you shouldn't call Birth of a Nation's racism "racism" because I'm looking at it through "today's lens."

Do you see what I'm getting at? Just because something was allowed 60 years ago, doesn't mean it was right then. Sometimes "today's lens" means we see the horrible things that went unchallenged for what they actually were.

Again, I'm going to reiterate that I love Goldfinger. I'm not trying to "cancel" Goldfinger. But defending that scene is going to get a side eye from me every day of the week.

Also, James Bond himself is a bastard. So we shouldn't be defending every single action he takes. That's what makes the character so compelling for 60 years!

I have several issues with Goldfinger writing and pacing and "excitement" wise...
Same with me. Goldfinger is now my favourite villain and his banter with Bond is excellent therefore GF has moved from below average to just outside the top 10 for me.
Also, James Bond himself is a bastard. So we shouldn't be defending every single action he takes. That's what makes the character so compelling for 60 years!

Exactly. Let that scene be a discussion point and sure, dislike the scene, but I don't think people need to spite the film because of it (though like I said I haven't seen much evidence of this, same with TB)

For me it's just, Phoebe Waller-Bridge actually made this AMAZING point in an interview about Bond and about if the character should change in a post-#MeToo world, Barbara Broccoli said the character would naturally change over time anyway which is fair, but Waller-Bridge said that, no, it's okay if BOND disservices a woman within a film, it's that the FILM itself shouldn't disservice her, and in the case of the scene from Goldfinger I feel pretty strongly that the FILM is disservicing Pussy Galore which is why I have a problem with it.

People criticise this scene until the cows come home, but then when Bond forcibly strips a woman naked in The Living Daylights they praise it as dark and flemingesque.

Bond isn't doing that for his own titillation though (and say whatever you will about Bond needing Pussy on his side, he wants to have sex with her regardless) and while I certainly wouldn't say BOND is respectful to the woman in that moment, I don't think the FILM is disrespecting her.

Pretty solid top ten there @Birdleson . Couple of changes I'd make personally, but your top five are outstanding. ^:)^
