I mean, he is technically responsible for Safin. Had he originally killed him, there wouldn’t have been NTTD. It’s almost like an unintentional chain reaction of events.
My go to is Sanford and Son. And from what I’ve read, I’m going to need it.
You may be right, but it’s easier said than done. We all have different emotions about this, and I guess we will express them in a way that’s best for us. The Ryan Reynolds reference I’m clueless about. Never watch the guy.
I get what you are saying (I think) but I joined this forum to get it off my chest and talk it through. I am devastated about the film but would rather discuss it than sit in a room feeling sorry for myself. I appreciate that lots of people have loved the film and for them, they don’t understand why people didn’t and it must be frustrating to read people’s comments criticising it. Similarly, I’ve read all the comments praising the ending and I don’t get why people could think it was an appropriate way to finish. At the moment I will struggle to enjoy any of the Bond films knowing what happens in NTTD so that’s not an option. I don’t understand the Ryan Reynolds bit - sorry.
Thanks. I’ve heard of it but never watched it.
Why the "lol" when you are serious Matt?
I have a good friend whose favorite Bond movie is DAD. His second least favorite is FRWL. I have never once made a snarky comment or accused him of not being a true fan.
Can see this happening. I know NTTD was completed before the Amazon deal but for them to build a profitable 'Bondiverse' as I fear they might, Nomi could turn out to be a happy accident. Especially as she seems to have been well received so far.
Although we've seen several 00's over the years we've never really followed one on an adventure. Now that door is open all bets are off for me.
The lol was just about the suggestion of watching that silly Reynold picture as a medicine. Better to watch some other previous Bond film to restore some kind of good mood, imo.
I feel exactly the same, and it's so weird! I never ever in my wildest dreams imagined I could even react like this to a Bond movie. I love Fleming and I enjoy the movies which follows the books closely the best, but I still consider myself a fairly open minded Bond fan. I can enjoy Moonraker, Octopussy and Tomorrow Never Dies everyday of the week and love reading the Gardner books over and over.
But somehow No Time to Die was too much to comprehend! I had a horrible time in the cinema... I was left in a state of sadness, confusion, anger, emptiness. After the first viewing of Die Another Day I could laugh it off, but now I didn't even want to be a Bond fan anymore. I couldn't laugh at it, I couldn't cry at it. Suddenly the whole Craig era felt bitter. Even Casino Royale, which I adore, was ruined. I didn't want to see NTTD again, which has never happened before after a premere. I didn't even want to see any other Bond movie for that matter!
I know I will recover from the blow, I know I will go into the cinema to watch the movie again, and I know I will love Dr. No when I see it again. But the feeling when leaving the cinema after NTTD will probably stick with me forever and I sincerely hope as few Bond fans as possible out there ever have to experience anything like it. It will take some time to process it and move on, but the only thing I wish for is that I one day can accept NTTD. Can I even like it? Who knows...? Time will tell.
HM is quoted in Marie Claire this week as saying that she has watched all the Bond films and still re-watches the earlier ones - the later ones are rather loud for her, apparently.
I'm now wondering if Her Majesty is furiously typing on here under a pseudonym.
It would be very "comic book" logic of them to continue the Craig continuity in which Bond and Felix are dead and Nomi and Paloma take their place with the MI6 cast staying in place in say direct-to-streaming films for Amazon Prime and a new James Bond continuity with a completely new cast as the cinematic universe. Two reasons (out of a possible 100) why this will not happen:
1. It's too confusing for audiences. If there ever is a split in continuities, they would more likely do it in different time periods to make totally clear that these are different things.
2. This cast is just way too stacked and expensive to be some kind of less prestigeous side-project. And even if you drop Whishaw, Fiennes, Kinnear and Harris (or keep only one as the MI6 contact) Lynch and de Armas are rising stars that probably wouldn't sign on for that type of thing.
Those issues could be solved easily if no MI6 characters returned in the Paloma spin-off (which is exactly what I would want anyway) and if the Paloma spin-off were only one movie released in around late 2023, years before the next Bond film.
A part from the fact that the EMP power is limited, as you clearly see like twice in the movie, do you think it is safe or smart to use EMPs on all your body?
Yep. Rumour at the time was either Boyle wanted to kill Bond, or the producers did, and the other disagreed. Now we know which one it was.
See:
https://www.theguardian.com/film/2019/mar/21/danny-boyle-says-script-dispute-made-him-quit-bond-25
Rumours of contention included a suggestion that Boyle and Hodge wanted to kill off the Daniel Craig 007, and that Boyle wanted the little known Polish actor Tomasz Kot, star of Cold War, to play the villain.
If that's what EON wanted, then they have it.
NTTD is released. James Bond is dead. Daniel Craig has left the role.
However...
My prediction is there will be sufficient backlash from fans and Eon will do a u-turn. Bond 26 will feature Craig's Bond (played by a new actor). A flashback will show the missile strike landed in front of Bond and the blast wave pushed him away from the area. Bond was scarred but miraculously survived.
Several months later, Bond is in a hospital in a third world country, maybe suffering with loss of memory. His scars heal and he looks like the new actor. A temporary antidote is used to suppress the nanobots in Bond's blood stream. At the end of the film, back in Q division, a comprehensive vaccine is injected into Bond to eradicate the nanobots.
The plot is Bond is a freelance assassin and the new enemy hire him to help topple a third world leader and his regime. MI6 discover Bond is alive and send some 00s on a retrieve Bond mission. Maybe Nomi is the lead 00 agent.
I think this is the best way to go forward with the franchise. You keep Bond alive, (yes the flashback survival scene may be far fetched but it's a Bond film, anything is possible - look at Die Another Day!), you switch Bond from hero working for Great Britain to lone independent assassin for hire so Bond's morality is questioned, and you can have an exciting quest to find and retrieve Bond plot.
I honestly feel this is the only way forward because killing off Bond is too damaging to the franchise and too divisive to the fanbase.
POSITIVE FEELINGS
- I like that apparently OHMSS and the Dalton films are looked upon with fondness these days. They are my favourites and when I became a fan in the 90’s I felt like an alien for loving them. Good to see that has changed.
- I’m a petrolhead, I couldn’t help but notice a stunning Maserati Quattroporte IV (a nod to Sanchez’s car?) and an even prettier Lancia Thesis in the PTS.
- The action scenes were all great for my money. Basically Bond films are pretty much the only action films without swordplay that I watch so I’m not aware if they were better or worse than MI or John Wick. For me they worked.
- Surely there is a lot of fan service (OHMSS score, DN title sequence, TLD’s car) I like that, even though I’m not sure yet if this romance deserved THAT song. Then again, I don’t think any romance in any film does except Bond/Tracy.
- Thought the movie looked great, especially in Matera. Those scenes were exceptionally stylish.
- Great title sequence, with the sinking DB5 and imagery that reminded me of Greek mythology, which I love.
- Léa Seydoux! Loved her in SP, love her here. I’d imagine one could fall for her. I buy the romance, even though, as I said earlier, don’t quite know yet if WHATTITW is appropriate here. On another note, love she spoke a lot of French in this one. J’aime bien!
- Ana de Armas! Enough has been said, most people agree she was awesome here, so do I.
- Horror film references! PTS straight from Halloween, Blofeld conversation feels like Manhunter. I can surely appreciate that.
- Maybe a bit more controversial, I liked Safin. No top-tier villain, but not bad either.
NEUTRAL FEELINGS
- Gunbarrel. This one I didn’t mind, but pleeeasssseee give us a traditional one next time.
NEGATIVE FEELINGS
- Let’s get the big ones out of the way. I don’t mind Bond becoming a father. I don’t mind depressing endings. But chill out with all the cheesy dialogue. Watch a European film and learn. Sad endings only work when they’re handled with dignity, with elegance. Silence says more than words could ever say. You’ve got good actors here, use them, use their expressions and keep Hans in tone too. I disliked the lack of subtlety here. That is my biggest gripe with the film.
- The score. Hans Zimmer is an ok composer, but he’s a bit bombastic for me, while his music also lacks personality. I’m sure that works for some people, for me it feels like a score composed by Instagram algorithms.
- Please make Bond a bon vivant again. I want him enjoying the finer things in life, I really want a diner scene and a wine comment next time.
- More than anything I’m worried where they’ll go from now. I liked most of the film, and I don’t mind the Craig era being a bit different than what we’ve had before. On the other hand I’d love to go back to a few regular, more traditional, spy missions. I love OHMSS and LTK and they were shaking things up too, that only works though when there is something to mix up in the first place.
FINAL THOUGHTS (at the moment)
I liked NTTD, although I didn’t like how cheesy the ending was. I’m also worried what will come next.
The title makes this notion perfectly clear as well.
The title in the end sounds like an attempt to exorcise death too. His legacy, both in the form of his stories and his daughter, they all live. Forever.
What a beautiful film.
