I've said that a few times so also find this claim from BB kinda surprising. I guess even if they do have such a list it'll be about auditions, schedules, finding the right actor for the movie etc. Craig's popularity as the character among general audiences also makes it a tricky task, at least in their eyes.
In fact, something like that happened with Bond. George Lazenby’s goes on a late night talk show and says he already quit the role. We even saw something like that with Craig making a crass joke about rather slashing his wrists and how that came back and bit him in the ass.
That'd be interesting to see. BB certainly seemed willing to let Purvis and Wade go once Danny Boyle came onboard initially for Bond 25. Certainly they've been hit or miss, although that's not unusual. Could we see a similar situation if Fukanaga came out with a strong concept, or indeed anyone else who manages to pitch an idea to EON? I doubt Waller-Bridge would be involved unless specifically asked to do so. Fresh blood wouldn't be a bad idea perhaps...
To be fair, I would wait until a full year after NTTD’s release, before expecting any announcement. There was at least a whole year between Brosnan’s dismissal and Craig’s hiring. It would also be great PR if they waited until October 5th on DN’s 60th anniversary to announce the new Bond.
The only time we saw super fast recasting was when Dalton officially departed in April 94 and then Brosnan was announced in June 94.
Yeah a lot of people forget how expensive these movies are, and the coordination that goes into financing them. These are BIG movies.
In Being James Bond BB talks about how she wanted Craig for Bond after seeing him walk down a hallway menecingly in Elizabeth (he obviously had much more going for him as well, but I sometimes have to remind myself that something like that can be the spark..). That film is from 1998 - although I don't know when she saw it and in what context - so not when they would have been actively looking and years before Craig got a call.
I also wonder how many actual, serious pitches for the next Bond - both actor and story - Eon just get without ever putting out a request. I'm sure fans and wannabes write to them with ideas everyday, but I'd love to know if that also happens when BB or MGW is just meeting someone at a party or whatever. Especially now with NTTD's end, they probably never hear the end of "I had this idea..."
I'm concerned about the next direction of the series, but I think I would be more worried if Barbara, Michael and Gregg weren't involved to be honest.
I may have occasional doubts but they know what Bond is and what makes the series special
Why do you feel like that @Birdleson mate?
It is frustrating when other series can continue at a more regular pace (one Bond film in the last 6 years compared to say, 13 mainline MCU films, two F&F Films (plus spin off), 9 DECU films, and more directly comparable, a M:I film with two more confirmed and coming up.
We have just had 'NTTD', we're only 8 months on from that.
My suspicion is that during the delays for that, the focus went into maintaining the marketing for the film, monitoring the marketplace, and having discussions around that and with their brand marketing partners. As much as I would have liked it, I doubt they would have put much into developing "Bond 26" whilst Bond 25 was still to launch and was a bit of a hot potato (due to external reasons affecting it).
I suppose now that the Amazon merger has completed, they (Babs and MGW) need to sit down with the new people there and at MGM and really hash out what they want to do going forward. We already have this 007 themed reality TV show coming which I cant say I am overly keen on, but it shows active development on the series at least.
Will they continue with the same structure of just films at 2-3 year intervals with a single Bond (my hope and probably EON's too) or will they want to try and "cinematic universe" it (probably Amazon's hope, and for my two-cents, an extremely bad idea)?
Only once that is defined, can we see any development begin on the next Bond movie.
My guess? If we are lucky they'll hash it all out over the summer, and we may get an announcement on JBD that Bond 26 is now in active development, perhaps with a target 'Autumn 24' release date.
Until then, its all speculation.
In addition, another announcement that B26 had begun development would occur shortly after Barbara finishes Daniel's play.
This was very optimistic and put a smile on my face for about two minutes until I read the Barbara article that it's going to take time.
TBF Babs isnt going to answer "yes we are on track and announcing in October" if that were the case.
Pfffft. I'm willing to bet my right testicle none of these people will be involved in Bond 26. Good thing too.
I agree with Birdleson. I feel the producers are stale in their decision making, and it needs new input with a fresh creative team. Throw out P&W immediately. Some of the regular team can stay on board like Kleinman, and I would welcome a return to David Arnold.
But it needs a shake up with a clean slate. The Fleming books need revaluating, to look closer at adapting the unused material, and then after that looking towards the continuation novels, rather than endless script rewrite after rewrite by committee.
Let's hope they don't drop the ball in casting Bond 26. Then you won't have to either
Haha! I'm not too worried. Been betting it since 2005 when people claimed Clive Owen would become the next Bond.
I do respect and appreciate BB and I don't blame any producer who manages to actually get along with their talent, even if I didn't always love the outcome of their projects. BB and the Wilsons are second only to the Fleming estate when it comes down to who rightfully deserves anything, and I curse the day they give up on us, or are forced to sell.
