Seems like Joe Kosinski is having a moment as action director du jour with Top Gun and Spiderhead. Maybe one to keep an eye on.

Duncan Jones (Moon) has tweeted out asking who the intended audience for a modern Bond film is meant to be. I wonder if he's angling himself to get some attention, or if he's perhaps already involved.

I think they're aiming for teens and up, like most tent-pole movies. They want the legacy Bond fans who've been there since the beginning, hence all the callbacks to previous eras, and they also want to draw in the younger audiences with the arching narrative.

The Brosnan films had the benefit of having a pretty strong lineup of video games.

I can attest to that, as it was because of playing GE64 that it made me want to seek out Bond films. I was 13 years old then.

I appreciate this is a pretty big tangent, but I amazed Bond hasnt turned up in Fortnite yet. Its the biggest game in the world played by a demographic the series needs to start attracting again.

NTTD wouldve offered a perfect opportunity, have Safin’s Island lair, the Cuba area as levels etc.

The Safdie Brothers did an amazing job with Uncut Gems. I wonder if their direction would translate into something similar to Casino Royale.

My biggest pet peeve with Nolan is that he puts too much complex exposition in dialogue/monologue, which can get a bit heavy for the average viewer. He always follows through whatever he sets up with payoffs in plot relevance, character arcs and twists, but I can imagine the tedium for casual viewers who get lost along the way. Tenet was especially heavy in that regard. If he were to work it in more flawlessly, and add some dry wit/absurdities he deserves a shot.

    Dialogue, monologue, bees and bats

I think @Pierce2Daniel suggested them before, imagining them helming something in the veine of the DAF novel. I think it could work, albeit I have some doubts about their capacity to handle big action scenes.

The Safdie Brothers are quite gifted, though it’s hard to imagine their style translating to Bond with all of its glamour and gloss. I’d imagine their direction would be translate to something along the lines of a better conceived QoS.

With the acclaim that Top Gun: Maverick is getting and the scale of the practical stunt/effect work, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Joseph Kosinski under consideration by the producers. Probably wouldn’t be my first choice but it’d certainly be visually striking.

Between Kenneth Branagh mumbling with a comical Russian accent, the strange sound mixing, and the fact that the film requires one to keep up with endless amounts of information it's... well, an interesting viewing experience.

To be honest, I'm still not sure what actually happens in Tenet. I certainly have no idea what's actually going on during the climax. As far as I'm aware they can jump around and pick stuff up without touching them like Jedis... I'm not sure if I personally needed more than this, nor do I feel the film warranted more.

I think Tenet, with all its predictable yet convoluted mystery, is a one and done viewing for me. I can't ever imagine having enough interest in returning to it. It's like Nolan tried to outwit Inception and failed miserably.

That’s what second unit directors are for.

I think Fortnite skews younger than what Bond should. On saying that, there was a Yakuza event in Fornite, and Yakuza is a very grown up series of games. I would not have thought that the two fan bases would ever meet Venn Diagram style.

There have been a lot of crossovers with Fortnite you wouldn't necessary expect - John Wick, Robocop, IT, Predator, so Bond wouldnt be too out of place. Also I think the majority of Fortnite players are 16-24, ideal age bracket. But the opportunity is gone now, unless they wanted to do some legacy content.

If I had to put money down on at this point, my guess is Gareth Evans (possibly with Sope Dirisu or Paapa Esseidu as Bond). Between Gangs of London and The Raid films he can deliver the dramatic/narrative heft along with some exhilarating action to put Bond back on top of the action genre at a time where its probable been surpassed by John Wick and Mission Impossible.

  • So yesterday Barbara Broccoli said that filming of Bond 26 is at least two years away: https://deadline.com/2022/06/james-bond-daniel-craig-next-007-reinventing-barbara-broccoli-1235053969/

Nolan will be available by then.

Nolan is one who talked about reinventing Bond, so that could be a point.

He’s not my favorite choice by any means, but I think there’s a strong possibility of Nolan taking on Bond 26.

if nolan makes bond 26 , that would be something special.
he never uses supercars in his movies, or gadgets so weird, so bond will drive a regular car and the gadget will be bond knowledge or something like that.even tenet used cars u can buy in used sites, so i can imagine bond in a real car chasing someone in a suv...

I can imagine Nolan 'reinventing' Bond while also taking a more conservative approach to the character. I can't imagine him deciding to give Bond a family or killing him off (even TDKR had that final moment during the ending with his Batman) or even including things like SPECTRE or going into his origins or whatever. We would get a reinterpretation but not a radical one in that sense...

I'm not sure if it's the right fit though... I dunno, Tenet felt like the work of a famous Director at a particular stage in their career. It's a film about ideas, visuals, not character. Only a Director with a great degree of success and unlimited resources could make something like that... Also he's not the most technically proficient Director in certain aspects of his creative vision. The sound design in a few of his recent films are a mess, and personally often take me out of the film. It's not a technical issue but a creative one. I get that it's tempting to go for an established name such as him, but it feels a bit too obvious to come up with something fresh and really engaging.

I think you missed a few of his Batman movies.... with Lamborghinis and gadgets.

I think David Mackenzie could be a great choice to direct a Bond movie. With "Hell or High Water" he already made a critically acclaimed movie and with "Outlaw King" he had the chance to direct a movie with bigger action scenes. Also, unlike directors like Nolan oder Villeneuve, his directing style is not too eccentric and could fit pretty well into the Bond series.
Combined with a screenwriter who brings back some humour and charm into the series, I think this could turn out pretty interesting.

    What do you think?

I think he was considered for NTTD at one point. I'm all for him personally. I'm not too keen on Nolan doing a Bond film, and Villeneuve's style, to me anyway, is just a tad too cerebral and... well, boring. (except Prisoners, love that movie).

Yes... and I found it boring, haha.

But honestly, that's just my personal reaction to most of his films. He's very talented, but his films juts aren't for me. Like I said the only one that really resonated with me was Prisoners.

Same here, actually I prefer the second movie over the first one.

I understand this thread is about possible Directors for the next Bond film...but every time I read the title of the thread, and I mean EVERY time - I think of Matt Helm. I know Austin Powers already mined that sort of material, but it was over the top and oriented to the humor. I think a fun set of films could be made for Matt Helm and, perhaps moreso, Derek Flint. OK, off topic, but just wanted to get that itch scratched.
    So...as you were ! Carry on !

The direction I like Edgar Wright, Denis Villeneuve, Christopher McQuarrie and of course Christopher Nolan with a trilogy.
