Box-office thread

So..I am not sure if this thread should be 007 only, but I think a general Box-office thread is something this forum needs.

Of course we will start this thread with SPECTRE.

Spectre opened with 73m dollars in the US. However with 150m in the rest of the world, SPECTRE now has 300m dollars worldwide. There are rumours sayign that SONY needs this movie to make 650m dollars WORLDWIDE so it can break even.

How much would SPECTRE make ? Few weeks a go I expected billion..but now I am lowering my prediction. 850m dollars. The reviews won't help this movie much.

    For box-office in general :) That's why I opened the thread in "movies and TV" section.

    I started the thread with SPECTRE, but ITT we can discuss how great the Peantus movie opened, and we can discuss the future movies and their success on the box-office :)

    Here are the numbers (estimates) for this weekend:

    1. Spectre 35.4m

    2. Peanuts 24.2m

    3. Love the Coopers 8.4m

    4. The Martian 6.7m

    5. The 33 5.8m

    The Martian is really going strong as it never left the top5 after it's debut.It now made 477m dollars worldwide.

    The Peanuts movie is doing well, but it should hope for better numbers worldwide if this movie wants to be considered as the hit it deserves to be.


    Goosebumps (#6 this week) made double it's budget already so it's doing well so far.

    Dunkirk has made 9.6 million in its first day opening in China. The film will probably make it to 500 million globally.

    We were discussing this a few weeks ago on another thread. Look for some pandering to kick in. I see more multi-ethnic products on the market as well.

    Similarly, FF8 did rather poorly in North America ($225m), but is the 2nd highest grossing film of the year behind Beauty and the Beast at $1.2bn on the back of a $1bn foreign gross. The cast is a bit of a potpourri.

    The thing is, China's market/BO isn't really the problem and if there's any pandering for that market it's a fundamental issue with Hollywood. For starters, many of the films that do big business in China/overseas often either flop or do unimpressive numbers domestically. Why is that? Look at Suice Squad, it did very well domestically with $325million, didnt have a China release and still made over $700million world wide. Can you imagine how much better it would have done if the film was much better made and recieved?

    Instead of making legitimately good movies, Hollywood studios churn out uninspired crap and righyfully arent always rewarded for it. It's all well and good when revenue figures from abroad are high but what the studios take away end up being peanuts and often find themselves in a situation where the current trajectory they're on just isn't profitable so things get cancelled altogether, delayed or gets rebooted.

    Wonder Woman's domestic total is an incredible $400million, with a China haul of $90million and a total so far of $807million. Take China away and these numbers are still beyond incredible. WB walk away with a very agreeable profit. This is the sort of revenue stream and creative process that Hollywood films should be at least aiming for with accordance to the type of film and budget.

    For films like Dunkirk which can't have pandering in them, I think the wordless approach will become more popular in the 2020's. This is a positive in my book as too many modern movies are overstuffed with exposition. It also brings down the run time and produces a more cinematic result.

    I think Dunkirk will win Christopher Nolan an Oscar for this very reason.

    I'm still trying to recover from Dunkirk's total awesomeness.

    Yes, and he has been snubbed for both TDK and Inception. Dunkirk is one of those few films clicks with audiences and the academy. They don't like nominating Sci-fi and comic book film s, but they love this type of story. Nolan will definitely be nominated this time.

    @Mendes4Lyfe-- if he doesn't get a few nominations in some key categories, I will be floored.

    Dunkirk was indeed a special film experience, unique in its narrative as well. I love the way it didn't follow any one lead, since all these men, and those who came to help them, were all "one"...

    Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is expected to pass Skyfall's US gross of $304 million in the coming week and become the biggest live-action film in Sony Pictures' history in the US, outside of the Spider-man franchise (the 3 films with Tobey Maguire and last year's Homecoming).

    It's a pretty good film, IMO. Will Smith is great in it! Somehow, I felt like we got the Fresh Prince back. :)

    @DarthDimi I really agree. It was a fast paced film with great visuals, and Will Smith pleasantly reminded us he is one the biggest A-List stars in the world, with bucket loads of charisma.

    I'm still stunned that Toy Story 4 didn't make a billion. How does minions make a billion, but not Toy Story? Children have no taste these days. [-(

    Black Widow will be released 2 weeks after Bond 25.

    It's a MCU movie so it may take a chunk of Bond's profits.

    I still expect B25 to make a lot of money in the first 2 weeks tho, this movie has no competition, so regardless of the quality it will be great

    The Lion King has become the 3rd film within the last week to enter the $1 billion club, after Spider-Man: Far From Home and Aladdin.

    Toy Story 4 will be next to cross that milestone, some time next week.

    I’m honestly surprised TND and TWINE didn’t at least benefit from a nostalgia pull by Brosnan. This just reaffirms what I already knew about Brosnan’s latter three films not being as fondly looked back.

    Very interesting to see Dalton so better. This at least affirms that if Dalton came back for a third film that UK audiences might have welcomed him back warmly. Maybe not the US. It’s too bad Bond is not getting a rerelease in the states.

    Results of QOS came in. Funnily, it’s ranked just under LTK. I always had those two ranked next to each other, so it’s funny to see audience turnout be the same.
