Just came up on my news feed, that director Nicolas Winding Refn was actually offered the job of heliming 'Spectre', but turned it down!! I thought he was just someone on the list! Though I'm one of the minority who likes SP, I would have preferred someone other than Mendes!

I wonder if EON will go down the route of hiring an A-list director (Sam Mendes and Danny Boyle) or a promising newcomer (Cary Fukunaga and Yann Demange). If they go for the latter, there are three interesting names who I like:

Romain Gavras would be an exceptional choice to direct a Bond film due to his unique style and ability to deliver edgy and captivating storytelling. With films like "Athena" on Netflix, Gavras has already proven his prowess in crafting propulsive action sequences that keep audiences on the edge of their seats. His distinctive visual style, as seen in the provocative and action-packed music video for MIA's "Born Free," showcases his talent for creating visually stunning and thought-provoking scenes. By bringing Gavras on board, EON Productions would inject a fresh energy into the Bond franchise, appealing to younger generations.

Another name I like is Halina Reijn. She would be a captivating choice to direct a Bond film, bringing her talent for crafting tense and exciting narratives to the franchise. Her work on the A24 film "Bodies Bodies Bodies" demonstrated her ability to create a gripping and thrilling atmosphere, keeping audiences on the edge of their seats. Moreover, Reijn's expressed interest in directing a Bond film on Twitter demonstrates her enthusiasm for the project. This passion, combined with her creative vision and fresh perspective, would result in an edgy and exhilarating Bond film.

A slightly left-field choice next: Audrey Diwan would be a daring and unexpected choice. Although she may not be inclined to take on the project. There is a scene in "Happening" where two characters have a covert conversation which made me think Diwan had potential in the spy genre. Additionally, her upcoming project, an Emmanuelle remake starring the beautiful Noémie Merlant, highlights her interest in exploring sensuality and intrigue.

@Pierce2Daniel you've displayed an excellent ability to suggest such people for Bond films in that past.
Happy to go with your instincts.

I've said in the past that I'd like to see a future Bond director with some experience with Horror or Thrillers, so these choices appeal to me too.

You're right, @Pierce2Daniel has a sharp eye and a critical, yet open mind. Always good picks/interesting choices.

Even without him possible Dua Lipa mabey consider for doing a title song, but Romain Gavras is her boyfriend. But we should take break for some time of French actres as Bondgirl. He and Audrey Diwan are both France directers.

If i must choose for Dutch directer or half Dutch i wil choose earlier for Anton Corbijn, Steve Mcqueen. But on this moment i consider Argentina/Duth directer Alejandro Agresti.

Next two stil be on my list too:

Swedish directer Daniel Espinosa who i sugest after Safe House (More CR/QOS), Child 44 i haven't seen yet but i think about Goldeneye.

The Spanish directer Juan Antonio Bayona. I sugest him after i watched ''El orfanato'', more present he directed Jurassic Park 5 for Universal. A Monster Calls is also on my wishlist to see.

Only woman i have on my list be M.J. Bassett. Based on footage from Solomon Kane and Silent Hill: Revelation. More present directer episode of Jack Reacher tv series. Also making movie Rogue (2020).

Fewer French women in future Bond films? Mais non! Plus! Plus!

Morgan S. Dalibert might be relatively unknown but he knows how to direct a action scene, the film Aka on Netflix seems to be a French Jason Bourne.
Jeong-beom Lee who directed the Man from Nowhere
    David Leitch would be excellent
    Clint Eastwood
    Gareth Huw Evans
    Matthew Vaughn
Was the last Bond movie made by Disney?
  • Generally speaking, I am all for them hiring a promising newcomer to direct, but not to direct Bond 26. Rebooting the franchise is a huge task and hiring a newcomer to do that is too risky.

And I am very much against Romain Gavras directing any Bond film, as he is a nepo baby. (His father is legendary director Costa-Gavras.)

Extraction 2 is receiving positive reviews; I really enjoyed the first one and look forward to seeing the follow up. Depending on what they're going for, Sam Hargrave may be someone to consider; his knack for action is outrageous and he appears to handle character and plot well.

Loved it; I woke up pretty early this morning so I could watch it before work, thought it was just as great as the first one was. If we're looking for directors purely with talent in filming action sequences and high level spectacle, Hargrave would be high on my list.

That may be how to “reinvent “ the new Bond era: create the antagonist, make sure there are interesting global hotspots, feed the fandom with a casino scene, but where the last era leaned into the internal character of James Bond, perhaps the new era can express character through leaning into the action… Not a copy of the M:I films, but just as inventive and creative as they do it in their films, or John Wick does in their movies. Invent action FOR the character of James Bond, 007. A man with a license to kill. Make it specific to his universe….

    I dunno, 🤷‍♂️…

A few basic rules for me:
No Oscar bait directors. Enough of the 3-hour phony dramas. Bond is action-adventure.
No women unless their last name is Bigelow, and she's probably too old by now anyway.
    No Americans.

@slide_99 , have you at least watched NTTD to judge the one American director who worked on a Bond film?

And no women directors? Why? There are some fine up and comers working in genre who could certainly helm a Bond film. Why no women directors? Seems a ridiculous “rule”.

“Phony dramas”, please define? I don’t recall seeing a phoney-drama-Bond film?

Judging from the way this new film looks, I'd be on board with Tom Harper as B26's director! Looks like he could bring a fresh energy to the franchise and this doesn't look green screened like Citadel.

Why are these streamers making so many interchangeable spy things at the moment? I like spy stuff but so much of this leaves me cold and makes me worried they'll kill the spy thing completely. Thank goodness for Mission Impossible doing it well.

Anyway, the new issue of Variety features Phoebe Waller-Bridge and apparently she addresses 'those' Bond directing rumours.

Yes, there really does seem to be a saturation going on at the moment and, like any glut, that'll eventually backfire and people won't want to see any more of it for a while. I do think that Bond will ultimately be the last man standing, though.

I’m not feeling much for any of the generic action jourenryman types and I hope that’s not where Barbara Broccoli’s head is at for launching the next iteration. The only action-heavy director I’d be excited about at this point would be Gareth Evans, he’s the only one I really trust to deliver action/stunts that can match Mission Impossible and John Wick, while still maintaining that Bondian “je ne sais quoi”. He’s also at the perfect point in his career as a writer/director and as far as I can see, the scheduling/timeline works as far as upcoming projects.

Spielberg (finally) with a John Williams Bond score.

Come on EoN… time is running out but not just yet!

It turns out that Oppenheimer has “prolonged” scenes of full frontal nudity. If Nolan can make a good romance with leads that have chemistry, then he would clear the last hurdle to directing Bond for me.

The thing is, Bond has always been PG-13, the naughty bits were never important to the plot, or at least not THAT important, it would feel too abrupt for the franchise to do such thing.

After seeing The Covenant I'd say Guy Ritchie has just won the audition for the job!

With none of his usual traits, he's made a taut action thriller. Full of drama and deadly serious.

Come on EON, he's just proved he's the man for the job. And he's British 😁🇬🇧

Well, the quotation is, but it was inserted into a new, up to date article and presented as if Mendes had made a new statement. Whether that was done maliciously or the work experience kid in the office got pranked, I dunno!
  • As a huge Nolan fan, I concede that if he does not direct Bond 26, he will very likely never direct a Bond film.
