It was a deserved hiatus. However, by May, the vivacious Mary Goodnight was recalled to London, a departure Bond felt deeply. Her position was soon filled by Eunice Headley, a competent Oxford graduate. She was efficient, no doubt, but lacked the endearing spark and vivacity of Goodnight.
With his new appointment and Headley at his side, Bond found himself cocooned in the island's beauty. The shimmering turquoise waters, crimson sunsets, and the palms' rhythmic dance contrasted starkly with the memories of London’s buzzing streets. But amidst this tropical serenity, Bond felt an undercurrent of restlessness, an itch for action that the tranquility couldn't quell.

Fair enough. Should have Jeffery Deaver write one over Sebastian Faulks. I just IFP moves on from the Fleming timeline. There’s not much more that they could do with it. It also reeks of desperation.
Yes, it would be nice to see a James Bond story set in the contemporary world again which was always the approach favoured by Fleming, Amis, Gardner, Benson and Deaver. Happily Charlie Higson's On His Majesty's Secret Service (2023) was a step in this direction again. It was good to see, as I think contemporary set Bond novels read more authentically than period set Bond novels do.
