It'll be sad when the movie theaters disappear. It used to be going to the movies was an event. Going from the fridge to the chair to watch the next Bond film really not that special. Got to love those days of the Bond double feature. That was an event.

I don’t think movie theaters will ever truly end. They still have passionate fans. Sometimes, it’s the case of people not shutting up, and thinking that they are in their own living room that turns people off.

In any case, I think Bond 26 has to be a great film to maintain the success of the franchise. I think each of the six actors' first films were pretty good and ambitious. Goldeneye and Casino Royale in particular were important to ensure the continued existence of the series. What is Martin Campbell actually doing these days?

Martin Campbell is reuniting with Bond alumni these days, it seems. I think he wants to end his Bond time on a high note, though. CR is generally considered better than GE in a lot of ways it seems.

Damm, he still looks amazing and much younger than Wikipedia wants to make me believe he is. Would be great to have him back for one final Bond film.

He’s fit and sharp; with the right script and star, Campbell absolutely has what it takes to make a great Bond film.

I'm more than up for Campbell for Bond 26. I would be surprised if he hasn't crossed Barbara's mind to launch Bond 7.

If there's a list of potential James Bond actors, then you'd imagine there's one with potential James Bond directors.
Having given the world the fifth and sixth Bond's, then Martin Campbell would surely be on that list.

I am astonished that some people here would think that Campbell's age would keep him from doing the job.

Who the hell do they think they are? And where the hell is the next Bond film? In the old days you could expect a new Bond film every two years. Christ, I miss the old ways.

Exactly. No one says Ridley Scott should stop directing. Or Eastwood, for that matter.

Campbell can make movies for Liam Neeson. No one says he should retire.

David Lean directed A Passage To India in his 80's and the movie was nominated for several oscars.

I don't doubt Campbell can still do it but time is of the essence, they would really have to get rolling soon if that were the case.

To be honest EON are so loyal to their own that they only tend to let the regulars go once they've gotten sick of Bond, and Campbell has stated he would do another one, so I wouldn't put it past them bringing him back.

On another note, if they were planning on doing something potentially dirisive with the next film, like raceswapping bond, it might be seen as a sweetener to have fan favourite director Martin Campbell at the helm to quell any anxieties.

Yeah, I think Campbell really wants to do his Bond hatrick. I really don't care what reviews his non-Bond films have. He clearly understands the anatomy of Bond completely.

It's like hiring Guy Hamilton for GE. We didn't need that.

Not really, since Hamilton was retired when GE entered production. I think it's also fair to say that Campbell has a superior track record with Bond to Hamilton.

"We didn't need that?"....did Hamilton direct GE?

The thing is Campbells career outside Bond and Zorro has always been spotty, its not like he went downhill in that regard. I also think "The Foriegner" was genuinely brilliant, and "The Protege" had a flawed script but still showcased Campbells skills as a director. The man is capable of doing another Bond, and still wants to do it based on interviews, it's just a case of whether EON will decide to go for him or not.

If Campbell did comeback, he would really be hard on Purvis and Wade again. He was on CR so much that he basically wanted them fired.

Age means nothing behind the camera. The man doesn't have the strongest non-Bond filmography but he understands the character and the franchise and has proven his talents twice already.

That is very true. Aren't Ridley Scott and Michael Mann in their 80's? Ridley's 86!

David Lean directed A Passage To India in his 80's and the movie was nominated for several oscars.

    Best director ever :)

That's just another reason to hire him IMO. And bring back David Arnold while we're at it. :D

I think EON should just shorten the journey and the wait and go for Campbell. A script should start being worked on and announce him in October.

I could be wrong, but I think fans tend to overemphasise that situation. From what I understand he didn’t try to get them fired. I mean, how could he? He’s not a producer and I suspect had he suggested to EON that they fire two of their long term collaborators (who seemingly worked on this project for a relatively long period) he would have been on very rocky grounds with the company at worst, or laughed out of the room at best. It was simply a case where P&W had done their (pretty extensive) drafts and Campbell suggested that an alternative writer who he thought suited to the job come in and work on it going into the final stages. Seems pretty standard really.

Unless Campbell has some sort of strange grudge against these two writers (and there’s no reason to believe he would - I doubt he’s even met them that many times) there’s no reason he’d be especially tough on them. No more than any other writer who produced drafts of a script he thought needed work.

Agreed, Campbell is just so good at bedding in the new actor, his reserved workmanlike style means they can take the follow up in any direction they choose. If quantum had pivoted into a more broad bond adventure I don't think anyone would have thought twice about it, and similarly if Tomorrow Never Dies had taken a dark turn it would have been completely accepted and not jarring in the slightest. His style just gives the producers a lot of room to manoeuvre when in comes to where they what to take things in future.

Now if EON only would wake up from their desks, phone Campbell and tell him he's back in the directors chair and we can finally get this show on the road!

Sure, just remake TMWTGG and have an amnesiac Bond turn up and be put to the test by the service in an almost suicidal mission against an assassin. Set it in modern day Japan, with a few jumps to Kyoto or Okinawa for exoticism, cast one of the Turners as Bond, William Defoe as the mostly silent killer, Cillian Murphy as M, and we're off to the races. Benjamin Clementine would do the song, and as Bond girls there's a plethora of skilled beautiful women just waiting for the phone call. But do give us a femme fatale, please. Call it Bullets for Winter, or something like that.

Martin would have a blast. One last hurrah. And we'd be a happy bunch.

    If only... ;)

While he probably would not give a specific answer, it would be interesting to ask Campbell if there any actors who he feels could make a good Bond.
  • edited February 6 Posts: 4,139
Considering his personal choice was Henry Cavill I’d wager he wouldn’t have much of interest to say. As for hiring him or not, it really depends on what they want from Bond 26. Campbell’s done two great Bond films, but he’s not necessarily the answer, and there’s absolutely no guarantee he’d a) want to do it, or b) it’d be right for him.

Anyway, not anything Campbell can do without scripts/a solid direction for the next film. Better get that sorted first really.

Well as @peter has stressed, all begins with the script. I have little doubt that if Martin Campbell were to be given a strong script and cast, that he could deliver a first rate Bond.

When it comes to a director, I favor an excellent craftsman rather than a high profile auteur.

All we know (or perhaps it's just rumour) is that Campbell apparently preferred Henry Cavill to Craig back in '05. So presumably he would be happy with Cavill as bond, although it's not his decision obviously.

Well, we know he wants to do it because he's said as much in interviews through the years, including recently. Whether EON want him is another matter, although after the fiasco of Boyle on Bond 25 it may be that they want a reliable pair of hands without too many pretensions, especially since they find themselves behind the 8 ball somewhat with the strikes and whatever else.

Indeed, and above all else, one that understands Bond on a pragmatical level.
