Well it certainly looks very epic and action-packed, good stuff.

The stuff about Ethan not wanting to sacrifice people etc. feels a bit recycled from quite a few of the recent ones though, I could live without that.

    Calling it now:
Ethan will opt to save his friends in the end by sacrificing himself in that sub. All the talk of doing a bunch more sequels is meant to throw us off of Ethan's death in this one. I hope I'm wrong though.

I dunno, if they're playing up the 'one last time' angle I wouldn't take that as gospel. Also I don't really see McQuarrie killing Ethan off, I don't think that's how he approaches these films. He doesn't really like people leaving the cinema on a low for a popcorn movie. Might be wrong of course, but my hunch would be he won't.

Looks good. Hopefully it's an improvement the crushing experience of the last film (which also had an excellent trailer!). The stunts look a bit more varied and interesting, certainly.

I still feel like one of a very small few who really, really loved the last one. I'd say this is probably the least attention-grabbing teaser of the last three or so but it still has tons of intriguing money shots that I'm more than excited to see it day one in theaters.

That looks intense i may have to do a retrospective series to catch up

I really liked the last one. Miles better than Fallout which was good but highly overrated

Looks fantastic. Trailer needed a bit more crescendo.

I really hope we get some sort of a mid movie heist sequence like we got in 1-5. The last two really missed that replacing them with a car chase

I'm in. If they kill off Ethan Hunt, that's a shame. Tom Cruise could do these movies for a long time. Hopefully, this one won't bomb at the box office, or copy Bond too much again. That submarine sequence looks similar to TWINE. These last two MI movies prove that Hayley Atwell would have been a great Bond cast member.

Fallout at least had a heist, Dead Reckoning didn't have much of that. The train bit was as close as we got but the plan fell apart so quickly we didn't get to see much of it. I need a plan to go into action in an MI.

Vatican from MI3 and Burj Kalifa from GP was peak in terms of mid MI movie sequences

The hints and themes of finality are so strong, IMHO, it shows its definately NOT the end for Hunt, it's a strange and possibly desperate marketing strategy. We are predicting the end of the movie after the teaser has been out for an hour. There could be sense of let down when we see Hunt survive.

I don’t see Cruise allowing Hunt to be killed off; I think he would want to leave the door open to revisit the character , even if many years later.

Also, It would seem far too derivative of other franchises, including Bond.

I thought Vatican was missing that bit of cleverness and invention, I'd definitely go Burj but then also Kremlin too, or maybe the water thing in Rogue.

Yep, it screams PR strategy to me too. Get them to go and watch by making them think he'll die.

There won't be another film for a while, and I doubt hugely that McQ will be involved (or at least not direct), but I don't think this is certainly the last. Depends if this one flops as well though I guess.

The compromise will be an open ending IMHO. The irony is that a Hunt death scene (with great direction, script and Cruises acting chops) has the potential to be superb cinema. Part of me wishes they had the guts but cruises "Peter Pan" issue I think will get in the way.
    "Mission Impossible 9: Agent Reserection"
PS did I hear in the dialogue that the human species is at stake?
PPS Ironically, after re-viewing, these trailers now almost look like AI produced, with thumping sound track, voice over stating how crucial everything is, key stunt sequence and, of course, Hunt running all over the place. Don't get me wrong, I love this stuff, but, for the first time, I'm feeling it's a little formularic. Imagine a "Skyfall" installment of MI with more investment on character and less running around.
"Do you see what comes of all this running around, Mr. Hunt? All this jumping and fighting, it's exhausting!"

Interesting shot at 1:36 which shows, of all things, the Rabbit's Foot from the third film.

Angela Bassett was first not avaible for both movies, but because of delay she was now for 8th.

Indeed. I felt that one was more obvious though. For the Rabbit's Foot shot it doesn't simply look like an unused shot from the third film. He almost looks de-aged. But then again, it's Cruise: he's a walking, breathing example of youthfulness. So I can't be sure on that.

Yeah, I saw the references. The call backs raise concerns for me re lack of originality and relying on "the good old days". I hope I'm wrong.

I wonder if that comes into play in this film. We didn't get much about it from the MI3 by the end. We just know that the IMF had taken custody of it. Remember Benjis speech about the potential of it.

@Last_Rat_Standing Interesting thinking. One of the issues with the last installment was the lack of clarity/threat re exactly what the Entity would do. Using Chimera as a physical realisation of the threat (in a post COVID culture) would possibly work with a threat that the whole audience would understand and relate to (plus, we get the McGufffin of samples of the virus rather than the much maligned golden key.)

Maybe, I dunno though; I just think McQ is more likely to give an uplifting ending than a downbeat one.

I don't disagree, certainly all the attempts to add weight through the 'you won't risk your friends' stuff feels very played out. I thought a lot of that stuff in Dead Reckoning felt like dramatic filler to pad out the scenes between action scenes than in any of the previous films.

Yes indeed. I do remember that they had that guy from MI:1 one in this too though, the guy we see in that flashback shot holding the knife (maybe he's kept hold of it all this time and Ethan goes to see him for something or other). I guess he's been in Alaska all this time.
I suppose they're doing some sort of lap of honour of the old films.

In the biplane sequence, we see Hunt in both the Yellow and Red aircraft, possibly indicating a mid air transfer?
Of course, if they had kept Ilsa onboard, they could have developed her characteer further and then killed her off in a more satisfying way. It would of been her final reckoning whilst the audience had assumed the finality applied to Hunt. I like the idea of Ilsa referring to "option 3" (Rogue Nation) and Hunt indicating that, after this mission, he was ready. Sorry, topic drift.

If it were anything to do with me, I'd have that scene structured in such a way that he's held on to it for so long as a reminder of why his career went down the crapper and why he's been stuck in Alaska for so long. Ethan takes it as a promise to use it to save the world to make it up to him. Something along those lines.

    I reckon you're probably bob-on with that.
