I keep a few extra jewel cases on hand—around four or five—just in case I accidentally drop a CD and crack the case (It’s happened before!). The rest of the jewel cases I threw away. I also kept a couple of DVD- and Blu-ray cases just to be on the safe side. They are kept in a storage box with CD sleeves and DVD/Blu-ray sleeves that are yet to be used.
Very wise I will keep maybe 20 best quality Jewel cases. I just ordered another silver CD box this time half the size and some sticky index labels, I think when I finally transfer 3/5 of my collection to sleeves that should be enough I think. I am reluctant to convert some rock albums and my Bond and movie scores I will leave them until last and see how I feel about it.
Blurays will be my next mission though yet to find any good storage cases.
I was debating whether to write on the index labels or buy alphabet adhesive letters. I opted for the latter and found some good ones they are plain and ideal in size, many of the other options were way to fancy will naff colours lol
Given the size of your collection, it might be worth keeping 10-20 jewel cases. My CD collection isn't bigger than that just a handful of cases might be enough.
I keep some Blu-rays in DVD sleeves. They are not optimal given the difference in height of the Bly-ray inserts, but my Blu-ray collection is much smaller than my DVD collection, so it wasn't worth getting a 100-or something pack of sleeves just to store a smaller Blu-ray collection.
I definitely prefer printed index labels to adhesive letters or cards you have to write on yourself, but that's depending on how the collection is sorted. Right now I'm not sure how I will eventually store my collection, but I guess it will be alphabetically by artist.
Put 20 Jewel cases aside in mint condition.
The index stickers arrived they are not bad as a temporary solution as despite being thin very strong and durable, they were relatively cheap.
I cancelled my order for the smaller box as just found out it wont arrive until DEC 20th at the earliest which is not good at all. So i just ordered another large case, which is probably wise. I have bought 15 new CD's since Friday, bought 4 of them a few hours ago lol, a few of which are digipacks so will not go in sleeves.
I may box up some of my DVD's and Blurays that I have not watched in ages until I decide what to do.
The silver CD cases are stackable they have indents for the feet of another box to sit in.
I have two large boxes for DVD's and Blurays to go into which I will start doing tomorrow, the films I don't watch often only. It is so good to have some space lol I can relax in my movie room not feeling overwhelmed by way too much media etc.
I now have a shelf cleared and three empty CD's towers.
One thing this process has made me realize is that I will never give up my physical media even more so as its becoming more compact in these great cases. My CD collection feels rejuvenated as these sleeves make everything look brand new, some of the jewel cases were a bit battered and marked and looked ugly in comparison.
I won't put my 4K disks, special editions, boxsets or any of my Arrow films in sleeves.
I opted for Bluray sleeves without the binder holes, I already have one box which is perfect to put them in to flick through like a Rolodex.
Edited: just put 50 Bluray's into the sleeves and a serious amount of space saved, 50 blurays have filled half a medium size shoe box.
@Torgeirtrap did you also purchase smaller paper sleeves for the disks to put inside the larger sleeves in between the art work for extra protection? I am debating whether i need to do this.
The builders have finished their work in my flat now – or rather, one of them is returning to install some plissé blinds sometime in the next week or so. When that's all done, I hope I can make time to look through my collection of books, DVDs, Blu-rays and CDs and see if there are some of them I can sell or donate. I suspect my place will look rather untidy if I don't.
I had the same feeling when I got my first CD sleeves too. Some jewel cases were looking quite ugly, and even though the CDs weren't on display, just knowing you had a collection of things that looked quite battered, was a little annoying.
I try to keep special editions or any movies with nice packaging "as is" too. I don't think many of these films in my collection will get a good price if I decide to sell them, but if I decide to sell some of these titles, it's better to keep them in original packaging.
For CDs at least, the sleeves I ordered also came with inner paper sleeves, so I didn't need to think about getting that on top of the outer sleeves. For my movie collection however, I bought separate inner sleeves, I think (it's a while since I got them).
That is good news and plenty of time left before Christmas to get resettled post improvements. Its a good opportunity to start as you mean to go on, my mission now is to retain physical media though be as minimalist as possible, I also need to adopt the mind set that even if something cost me money in the past if it serves no purpose now i need to get rid of it.
Where i am Blurays and CD's have little sell on value unless they are special editions etc which made my decision to put as many disks in sleeves an easy one.
I did see 500 paper thin inner cases going for around £16 pounds on amazon I will probably buy them just to give the disks extra protection.
There's a lot of stuff to do before Christmas so I wonder how much time there'll be to get resettled! :)) It's certainly a good opportunity to do things anew. I'll have to be very deliberate about what I place in the rooms. One will be the primary bedroom, so that room will only contain a bare minimum anyway, but the other room can easily become too packed. It will serve as an office space as well, so I need to dedicate some space for that. A minimal approach is important, for sure.
I see Blu-rays and DVDs go for next to nothing online these days – no doubt because many are getting rid of their physical collections. That's why I've only donated the movies and CDs I've got rid of; there's simply been no point in spending time trying to sell it all for just a few pounds a piece (or kroner, in my case).
Inner paper sleeves are super cheap, and do the job. For more precious CDs and films there might be better options, but you might not keep these ones in sleeves anyway.

Just ordered the 500 inner paper sleeves best to be safe and not risk scratches on disks.
From experience my spare rooms turn into dumping grounds it is easily done, as a hoarder of tech, media and memorabilia its an ongoing battle in which I may actually be turning the tide lol
Reluctantly I am donating my Mission Impossible and Star Trek Blurays, I have them all on 4K now so I need to be ruthless.
