The one bit of the article which isn't news i.e. it's a paraphrase of something they've said previously in other interviews they gave ages ago! :D

Oddly that didn't stop the Guardian also leaping on it and thinking it's something new:
    https://www.theguardian.com/film/2024/nov/14/james-bond-actor-race

Yeah, B and M were interviewed about it yet again the other day. In other words, we're still at square one.

As fans awaiting a film I suppose. No one knows where EON are at with this (at least broadly).
  • Why have experience when you can be the unexpected.

Concerning the next actor to play Bond, in his speech last night Craig joked, or revealed, “ But he might be in the room “. We need a guest list! Lol

I know, it’s pretty tempting to try and find any Bond hopefuls in there! For what it’s worth though there’s a chance the future actor wasn’t in the room and I wouldn’t read much into the comment even if it turns out to be true in hindsight.

That said there were an awful lot of people there, and a few who’ve been mentioned here. I know Paul Mescal and Harris Dickinson were there who I guess were the last two mentioned here. So who knows…

    Paul Meh-scal...a round-faced Bond ? Nay.
Harris Dickinson...not even for a Young Bond.

Variety's new Actors on Actors interview series has Daniel Craig interviewing Josh O'Connor... Will some people read into this? Probably.

Yeah, Josh O'Connor as James Bond works for me...if it's him. O'Connor knows how to act and will bring something different from Craig to Bond, if he's picked.

He's not my pick either, but who knows.

O'Connor's a pretty solid actor. That said I tend to go back and forth on him both as a Bond potential and in terms of what I get out of his performances. I thought he was great in Only You and God's Own Country - very intense but masculine. Pretty youthful in those films but with a bit of world weariness to his characters which is a good thing for Bond. That said I really wasn't a big fan of his performance in Challengers and haven't been quite as taken in by a couple of other things I've seen him in.

I'd definitely give him the benefit of the doubt if he was picked, but something tells me Bond wouldn't necessarily be his thing.

La Chimera convinced me of O'Connor's Bond potential. I don't see anything wrong with his appearance. He's tall, has dark hair, maybe not classically handsome, but neither was Craig. He has a very effortless quality, unlike ATJ, who always seems to be posing.

Speaking of ATJ, I've started seeing trailers for Kraven, and he doesn't speak in any of them. Is Kraven known for not saying much, or do we think this is a deliberate choice?

You know, I'd forgotten about Kraven until now (shocking, I know). For some reason Sony released the first 8 minutes of the film... not sure if I've been sold on it personally though.

On the plus side, ATJ has a relatively deep Russian accent in those 8 minutes. And seems to leap around and run on walls an awful lot...

Something about O’Connor in this photo just catches my attention. I can’t really put my finger on it but that cold detachment conveyed in his expression just oozes Bond to me. The cigarette is also bringing out some imagery from Fleming as well. I think he’d be a solid pick.

'American ornithologist Dr James Bond, an expert on Caribbean birds based at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia and author of the definitive field guide Birds of the West Indies.

Fleming, a keen birdwatcher himself, had a copy of Bond's guide and he later explained to the ornithologist's wife that "It struck me that this brief, unromantic, Anglo-Saxon and yet very masculine name was just what I needed, and so a second James Bond was born".'

Would make make an even better Bond villain?

There are two things which capture anyone's attention. Come on, Bond should be handsome.

Not sure I'm seeing anything wrong with his looks. I think he's more traditionally Bond looking than Craig and even Connery (by the way that's not an endorsement in itself and doesn't always mean much).

I need to give La Chimera a watch incidentally.

I watched that first 8 minutes, and the ridiculous faces TJ pulls to try to convince you that he's cool just made me laugh. He's on the Statham level of action acting, but without the charisma.
The film looks terrible too, I got bored and it was only 8 minutes.

Actually, random thought but Statham is kind of the closest thing to Roger Moore we have nowadays isn't he? :D Not what you'd call a classically great actor, plays the same character in everything, but has quite a lot of charisma and charm, and has a wink-at-the-audience quality which says he knows this is all quite silly too, but isn't it all fun.

Personally I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't complete rubbish. It wasn't amazing and rather generic (a bit too heavily edited at points for me too) but not laughably awful. Not quite a Morbieus situation. I wasn't blown away by ATJ in that clip either.

Probably something to that. Although I think Moore was a better actor. They do have that similar charisma and self aware charm though.

At the moment, regardless of the actors, I'd just be happy if there was any known movement regarding casting. Or the script.

    Yes!

I know this will never happen but a documentary that covers , in detail , the evolution of the next incarnation of Bond would be incredibly interesting.

Oh, the world saw pics of Craig when he was announced as Bond. Some even dug out his bad pics. But when the first trailer of CR came out, there was silence. There's obviously a difference in being in ordinary mode and being in James Bond mode. I'm not saying I'm certain he would be Bond, but the history of Craig's Bond tells us to wait for...at least a trailer, before we judge the new Bond. That's if his promotional pics doesn't convince fans. But for me, Craig's promotional pics did it...before I even saw CR's first trailer.

Even though the face is important, it's the essence of Bond that we should look for in someone. It's both an on-screen and off-screen role.

Craig's ears don't stick out. Nor - with reference to N Hoult - do his teeth distract. I'm being superficial ? OK, but casting does care about such things.

Craig actually does have bigger, sticky outy ears out I’d say, haha. He also has blond hair, slightly too fair eyebrows, and arguably a rather big nose as well. His mouth is a bit pouty too I’d say.

But I’ll put it like this - he also has an almost Steve McQueen type ruggedness/handsomeness to him, and loads of charisma (along with acting talent). Wonderful icy blue eyes too, the closest we’ve had to the literary Bond’s. Great physicality and physique. So his sticky outy ears and funny nose obviously didn’t matter when it came to his Bond potential.

It’s the same with any actor, either a potential Bond or previous one. Everyone has things about their appearance which are distinctive. I think any producer/casting director will easily ignore big ears or whatever if the actor’s suitability for the role shines through in the process. Meanwhile many of us will dwell on these superficial details and often write off pretty great candidates because we don’t have to do their job and would have little idea how to do it anyway.

Even with unconventionally good looks Craig , for the most part, was a very effective Bond

With that said, I believe the next actor will be perceived as more traditionally handsome.
