I keep a few extra jewel cases on hand—around four or five—just in case I accidentally drop a CD and crack the case (It’s happened before!). The rest of the jewel cases I threw away. I also kept a couple of DVD- and Blu-ray cases just to be on the safe side. They are kept in a storage box with CD sleeves and DVD/Blu-ray sleeves that are yet to be used.
Very wise I will keep maybe 20 best quality Jewel cases. I just ordered another silver CD box this time half the size and some sticky index labels, I think when I finally transfer 3/5 of my collection to sleeves that should be enough I think. I am reluctant to convert some rock albums and my Bond and movie scores I will leave them until last and see how I feel about it.
Blurays will be my next mission though yet to find any good storage cases.
I was debating whether to write on the index labels or buy alphabet adhesive letters. I opted for the latter and found some good ones they are plain and ideal in size, many of the other options were way to fancy will naff colours lol
Given the size of your collection, it might be worth keeping 10-20 jewel cases. My CD collection isn't bigger than that just a handful of cases might be enough.
I keep some Blu-rays in DVD sleeves. They are not optimal given the difference in height of the Bly-ray inserts, but my Blu-ray collection is much smaller than my DVD collection, so it wasn't worth getting a 100-or something pack of sleeves just to store a smaller Blu-ray collection.
I definitely prefer printed index labels to adhesive letters or cards you have to write on yourself, but that's depending on how the collection is sorted. Right now I'm not sure how I will eventually store my collection, but I guess it will be alphabetically by artist.
Put 20 Jewel cases aside in mint condition.
The index stickers arrived they are not bad as a temporary solution as despite being thin very strong and durable, they were relatively cheap.
I cancelled my order for the smaller box as just found out it wont arrive until DEC 20th at the earliest which is not good at all. So i just ordered another large case, which is probably wise. I have bought 15 new CD's since Friday, bought 4 of them a few hours ago lol, a few of which are digipacks so will not go in sleeves.
I may box up some of my DVD's and Blurays that I have not watched in ages until I decide what to do.
The silver CD cases are stackable they have indents for the feet of another box to sit in.
I have two large boxes for DVD's and Blurays to go into which I will start doing tomorrow, the films I don't watch often only. It is so good to have some space lol I can relax in my movie room not feeling overwhelmed by way too much media etc.
I now have a shelf cleared and three empty CD's towers.
One thing this process has made me realize is that I will never give up my physical media even more so as its becoming more compact in these great cases. My CD collection feels rejuvenated as these sleeves make everything look brand new, some of the jewel cases were a bit battered and marked and looked ugly in comparison.
I won't put my 4K disks, special editions, boxsets or any of my Arrow films in sleeves.
I opted for Bluray sleeves without the binder holes, I already have one box which is perfect to put them in to flick through like a Rolodex.
Edited: just put 50 Bluray's into the sleeves and a serious amount of space saved, 50 blurays have filled half a medium size shoe box.
@Torgeirtrap did you also purchase smaller paper sleeves for the disks to put inside the larger sleeves in between the art work for extra protection? I am debating whether i need to do this.
The builders have finished their work in my flat now – or rather, one of them is returning to install some plissé blinds sometime in the next week or so. When that's all done, I hope I can make time to look through my collection of books, DVDs, Blu-rays and CDs and see if there are some of them I can sell or donate. I suspect my place will look rather untidy if I don't.
I had the same feeling when I got my first CD sleeves too. Some jewel cases were looking quite ugly, and even though the CDs weren't on display, just knowing you had a collection of things that looked quite battered, was a little annoying.
I try to keep special editions or any movies with nice packaging "as is" too. I don't think many of these films in my collection will get a good price if I decide to sell them, but if I decide to sell some of these titles, it's better to keep them in original packaging.
For CDs at least, the sleeves I ordered also came with inner paper sleeves, so I didn't need to think about getting that on top of the outer sleeves. For my movie collection however, I bought separate inner sleeves, I think (it's a while since I got them).
That is good news and plenty of time left before Christmas to get resettled post improvements. Its a good opportunity to start as you mean to go on, my mission now is to retain physical media though be as minimalist as possible, I also need to adopt the mind set that even if something cost me money in the past if it serves no purpose now i need to get rid of it.
Where i am Blurays and CD's have little sell on value unless they are special editions etc which made my decision to put as many disks in sleeves an easy one.
I did see 500 paper thin inner cases going for around £16 pounds on amazon I will probably buy them just to give the disks extra protection.
There's a lot of stuff to do before Christmas so I wonder how much time there'll be to get resettled! :)) It's certainly a good opportunity to do things anew. I'll have to be very deliberate about what I place in the rooms. One will be the primary bedroom, so that room will only contain a bare minimum anyway, but the other room can easily become too packed. It will serve as an office space as well, so I need to dedicate some space for that. A minimal approach is important, for sure.
I see Blu-rays and DVDs go for next to nothing online these days – no doubt because many are getting rid of their physical collections. That's why I've only donated the movies and CDs I've got rid of; there's simply been no point in spending time trying to sell it all for just a few pounds a piece (or kroner, in my case).
Inner paper sleeves are super cheap, and do the job. For more precious CDs and films there might be better options, but you might not keep these ones in sleeves anyway.
Positive thinking you will get it sorted lol
Just ordered the 500 inner paper sleeves best to be safe and not risk scratches on disks.
From experience my spare rooms turn into dumping grounds it is easily done, as a hoarder of tech, media and memorabilia its an ongoing battle in which I may actually be turning the tide lol
Reluctantly I am donating my Mission Impossible and Star Trek Blurays, I have them all on 4K now so I need to be ruthless.
Mxfans White OPP Plastic Double-sided CD DVD Sleeves with Window & Flap Pack of 500
Very happy with these, totally saved my physical media.
Been looking round charity shops and found this CD player so bought it, I needed another player for another room...
It is pretty good for what it is, the mechanical upward sliding CD door is pretty cool.
I have ordered 4 of these boxes in the Black Friday sale...
I will use them for my music cassettes and special edition CDs.
P.s. these DVD storage boxes could probably house 200 sleeves lol I don't think i needed 2. I will use the other for something else, perhaps the DVD's that are in steel books etc.
I feel each week get busier and busier now, haha! Hopefully it will calm down a bit the last couple of weeks before Christmas.
I know that too well – up until now my bedrooms have been a bit of a dumping ground, but I hope to make some much needed changes now. Luckily I've been to busy to make a mess out of things!
I got quite a few paper sleeves from my last purchase. The paper sleeves can be used for other things too though. I've used some to store replacement screws from furniture purchases, etc.
I think upgrading to another format is a great opportunity to do a movie collection clear out. I've done so a couple of times, and each time I've saved some necessary space.
Those sleeves look great, @Fire_and_Ice_Returns. Might have to check them out myself…
That CD player reminds me a little bit like the late 80's/early 90's Bang & Olufsen CD players, which were also standing upwards. Being a Philips player, it's also a well known brand, which should be an indication of the quality.
I've been looking at these ones myself too, but haven't purchased anyone yet. Let me know what you think of them!
Storage boxes like these can be used for so much more than just physical media. I've been looking at various Ikea storage boxes lately, for anything from clothes to books. Not sure what to get just yet though.
I have 7 of the boxes so far 3 different sizes, got them relatively cheap and very sturdy they offer a great solution for storing and flicking through sleeves whether it be CD, DVD etc
I have already got rid of several large bags of jewel cases and DVD and Bluray boxes the process has been some kind of therapy for me as I have a bad habit of hording. The process is making me more ruthless and I will clear most of what is in storage now that includes the rest of my books and memorabilia, my aim is to almost empty my spare bedroom.
My thinking with the inner sleeves was ensuring the disks do not get scratched, I may need to buy more sleeves my collection of disks is ridiculous across all the media types.
Having a large amount of DVD's in one box is great I totally forgot about many of the films I own many of which you can't easily get on Bluray or digital. The new compact storage will lead me to revisiting a lot of great films.
---
I bought another back up portable SSD drive to have a second back up of my digital music, was a good price in the Black Friday sales.
SSK 512GB SSD External Hard Drive, Portable
I did post a image of a CD player recently so technically staying on topic lol
I owe this thread a lot with regards to giving me idea's of better music storage solutions.
Hahaha, point taken! :))
A lot of my collection is available on digital (both music and films), but my worry is the day a lot of the titles aren't. That's why even though I've got rid of a lot, there are still a few albums and films I don't necessary have listened to/watched in a long time that I hesitate to part with.
I have a couple of external hard drives for digital downloads of films and music, but the capacity of both are much less than the one you've posted here. Both are quite old though, and the capacity of new external hard drives is vastly superior to what was available back then.
The new drive is compact very handy with that amount of storage space, my primary external drive which is permanently connected to my PC is 1TB that has all my games on.
The new drive you just made me think I could put all my Bond movies on there as there is enough space.
I have numerous flash drives though a few have failed on me over the years I probably have a couple of flash drives still in there wrappers that I have not used lol I have a case for all my cables, memory card, usb drives etc I need to have a look through it and see what i have.
Last count I have roughly 15000 digital down;load songs on my PC and Sony Walkman MP3 though that memory card is full so need to buy a better one if I am to have the majority of music I want stored on there. I can't remember the max memory card my Sony Walkman will allow so need to look into that.
I keep my new SSK 512GB SSD External Hard Drive, Portable in a fire proof case, so in the worst case scenario I will still have my music lol
It has taken me a few weeks to transfer CD's and Movies into sleeves and I still have not finished lol I toko about 50 DVD's and Bluray's to a charity shop the other day and did some more sleeves so the space is appearing so its all worthwhile. whilst emptying boxes I found an even better box for my Bluray sleeves.
Next week I need to ring the scrap man to take a load of old TV's and fridges off my hands then my spare room will almost be clear.
I have spent quite a bit of money on sleeves and storage though long term it will be worth it. 2025 has to be the year of becoming minimalist for me lol.
The easiest decision would be to sell some of it all, but since most of my gear are of sentimental value that's out of the question for time being. I might have to draw up the floor plan of the room digitally in Illustrator, then see what I have left of wall and floor space. From there I can use the measurements to narrow down the search for storage and media solutions.
Wise keeping it out of the way with dust whilst builders are there.
I went super ruthless earlier and bagged up another 100 DVD's and blurays to take to charity and the last of my books and some ornaments I have to get rid of this stuff, its now easy though I have to let go. Taking all my Man United DVD's and memorabilia also, it has to be done.
I could try and sell all that stuff though the value is not there right now and it would be very time consuming trying to sell it all.
there are a few sentimental things i will never get rid of like items that belonged to my grandfather.
I have put some DVD's in storage that i don't have on any other format and would struggle to get anywhere, there is about 100 of those boxed lol
Your situation is good in that you can plan ahead and start from scratch, becoming more minimal i will be able to do that to a degree.
It certainly got dusty, so it was great that I had space to keep all the gear. The attic got a bit cold during the renovation, so I hope it hasn't been too cold for the gear that's been in the attic – such as my amplifiers.
If you've seen my attic, you know I'm far from starting from scratch, haha! I am planning to keep some stuff in the attic for time being. If it doesn't cross my mind anytime soon to take those things down into the apartment, it's a good indicator what I need to keep or not – which I might actually do something about.
I will have a look through my DVD collection soon, and see if there are many DVDs I got boxed up I can just digitise and get rid of. Then I have digital copies of those films at least. Keeping slightly more on topic, I also have some music DVDs (concerts and such), which I haven't played in yeeeeears. Those likely have to go in my next clear out.
The process of clearing out my mothers home before she sold it, I am not kidding when I say that 50% of the work was just going through paper work – like decades of it. If there's one thing I can recommend when doing a clear out, it's to get done with the paper work, and get rid of as much as possible. I still have some boxes of some of my mothers paper work which she hasn't had the time to go through.
10 bags and boxes now I gave away most of my antiques hundreds and hundreds of pounds worth though feel better for it, I sorted through all my own paper work shredding most of it lol I did keep a box full of rare carvings that are valuable i could not part with them.
Wrapping electric items in blankets may help if it too cold in the attic, I have almost emptied my spare room now its great lol
Ordered some more CD and DVD cases and sleeves, so I will have a third CD case like the one I recently bought.
Carvings? How interesting! I haven't got many antiques and items from older relatives, besides the old bar cabinet I previously mentioned. My mother has some older stuff in storage while she finds a place of her own. Since she will likely end up getting a smaller apartment and likely can't keep everything, I need to keep in mind that I might have a decision to make regarding which older furniture we should keep. I must at least find a place for one of my granddads old cabinets.
I didn't think of using old blankets around my audio gear! I've done a bit of sorting today, so I might try and get everything audio related down from the attic – if only to keep it out of the cold.
I have used the blanket when moving previously for extra protection on electrical items.
I had a lot of collectables from years ago when I did collectable fares etc, I just got to the point where i can't see myself putting in the effort to sell so just got rid. Most of my collectables are now just what is on display. I gave away all my bond books also bar a couple of box sets.
It is good to have unique items I just had too much, I need to sort through my prints next and be equally as ruthless.
I have to get out of the hoarding mentality... saying that I bought some Beatles memorabilia the other day though a small set of items.
I have bought some more cases for audio cables etc so I have them all compartmentalized and not just randomly laying about in drawers etc.
I have kept a couple of books that belonged to my Grandfather, certain things I won't get rid of.
