The best Bond has been killed off. Not sure how to follow Craig anyway. That presumably is where EONs thinking is at. Might as well mothball the franchise until the right actor comes along.

Every Bond has his day and his fans. It's unlikely the next Bond will be a dud. You'll miss Craig like some of us missed Connery. But life and Bond go on.

Indeed. The next Bond will have his fans. Perhaps even be regarded as one of the best in the right circumstances for a majority. It's the beauty of the franchise. Every Bond is someone's favourite, and there are so few of them anyway. They're also so different but the same.

Just wondering, why can't the rights be sold to EON? Is the price too high? Is no one willing to allow them that particular favour?

Why would they sell? They own half of James Bond.

But what exactly is the financial incentive for keeping the rights if no films are going to be made? If another 5 or so years pass with no movement on the next era, why WOULDN’T Amazon sell off their share? At that point they wouldn’t have made much of a return investment.

Because you own all of the rights for all 007 movies to be made in perpetuity. Yes there's an impasse right now, but it would be as stupid as Saltzman ditching all his rights back in the mid 70s or Lazenby passing up the role because Bond wasn't as cool as Easy Rider. Remember all those Easy Rider sequels? Good call right?

I honestly don't understand why folks are thinking that MGM would sell up. If you owned half of James Bond would you sell up? Come on.

Because it’s not MGM who’s in control; it’s Amazon. It’s not MGM who would make that decision to sell; it’s Amazon. Yeah selling Bond would entail losing out on the money made from streaming and merchandise, but Amazon is worth $2.37 Trillion Dollars and the company continues to grow each day. Do you honestly think they’ll lose sleep over potentially losing Bond? Bond is child’s money to them and I’m sure they know it. They could hardly care less I feel.

I have to agree with you here @mtm
Amazon may be the wealthiest company in the world, with trillions of dollars.
But Bond is a massive deal. In cinematic history it's a legendary franchise. Still going after over 60 years. It's a not a matter of money.
Amazon don't need to sell their share; it owns a 50% stake in the James Bond franchise.

If this detail is true, Amazon is a bunch of f***ing idiots:

"Wilson, her stepbrother, has complained to friends that he couldn’t land a meeting with anyone at Amazon above an “L6,” the internal designation for a senior role that is nonetheless six rungs below Chief Executive Andy Jassy, an L12."

I mean, c'mon! They just got an honorary Oscar last month.

Classic tech company nonsense. They think they can bypass the norms and traditions of legacy industries. Relationships are everything in this space.

If they’re worth so much why would they sell? It’s not like they need a quick hit of money, best to keep a more lucrative asset.
‘Not caring’ isn’t a reason to sell.

I'm a little ashamed to admit it, but there is an official Easy Rider sequel, as someone managed to snag the rights to the name and to produce Easy Rider: The Ride Back, with a pro-military message.

Also, I admit, without any shame, that I love most of the low-budget movies that the majors produced in the wake of Easy Rider, and I prefer them to the original: Two-Lane Blacktop, Electra Glide in Blue, Vanishing Point…

"Femmes, I will remind you, this is a deal a la mort. Only one of you can hold the creative rights to Bond. If a contract rescission is necessary, as your judge, I will administer it myself. I do not expect tv shows, only a feature film. On my command each party will propose ten ideas. Are you ready, Madam Broccoli?"

If things are truly so bad between EON and Amazon, why is Amazon doing CCBB with them?

Just to be clear, this is the same guy that’s hated every film made since and including CASINO ROYALE.

How Crazy would it be if 33 years after Dr No, after a long gap due to a dispute between EON and MGM we got Goldeneye, and then 33 years later after a similar dispute we get the next era beginning in 2028. Its almost perfectly symmetrical, with Brosnans first entry being the support beam at the half way point, amazing.

I’m sorry @Mendes4Lyfe but I don’t think it follows a pattern like you’d like it too.
Otherwise Amazon would use their algorithms to factor the optimum time to release the next Bond film.
  • I guess we are literally now at the casino Royale poker scene were they are looking at each other and who will blink first and make a move.

Maybe it doesn't work this way, but regardless this is the way its worked out if that makes sense? ;)

@MakeshiftPython i mean it is his opinion but it's definitely not out of the question that it could be* right i just thought it was interesting to share as a perspective. The problem with EON being so secretive always is there is a void of transparency of what is really going on. So naturally things will fill the void if that void isn't filled well you can speculate about anything. I guess to people who know how the industry works this is probably nothing new to people who don't it's foreign.

He lost me a minute into the video when he spoke of the death of Bond as a choice made that all fans dislike rather than just being his own opinion.

Gregg Wilson said it best when they stated plainly that there is no Bond film actively in development, and I remember at the time a lot of people saying that was just industry misdirection and there was more happening behind the scenes, well it seems he was telling the truth after all. So perhaps we should listen to Gregg, and accept that "there will be a new Bond film some day" but not for a long while yet. They probably won't even begin development until sometime in 2026.

I just hope that once they get a new actor and a new film rolling that we dont have to wait long for the one after that. I dont think they will cause you have to keep the moment going with the new actor.

Its funny. Dalton wanted to come back for Goldeneye and be done after that but Cubby said he had to sign on to more to keep the momentum going. Craigs last film was 6 years after his one before and he didn't have to sign on to more. lol

Remember that between, roughly, 2008 and 2010, MGM was on the verge of bankruptcy. Skyfall was in development then, but there was zero official announcement outside of Sam Mendes being hired as a "consultant".

    https://deadline.com/2010/01/exclusive-sam-mendes-about-to-be-hired-as-consultant-on-bond-23-21327/

As he was just attached as a consultant, it wouldn't trigger the terms of the contract with MGM, that apply when they pick for instance the director, getting EON and MGM tied for good on the development of the project, with a first payment. Once the financial situation at MGM was addressed, Mendes was then confirmed as the director, which was the plan all along.

A similar thing happened between 1989 and 1993. If development on the third Dalton movie had progressed at the regular pace and reached some milestone, EON would have had to deal with Giancarlo Parretti's MGM as an associate.

Yes, there's really nothing for them to say prior to an official pre-production. It doesn't mean they haven't done anything at all (nor is it any indication they've completely mapped this film out or are even touching it at the current time).

Yep like the video said nothing new

Yeah, the Craig image suggests it's from the same old right wing grift merchants who pretend they are afraid of trans people etc. Not clicking on that to give them any money.
