The return of Jaws

Was just pondering about a once rumoured Jaws spin-off film circa Moonraker (the Bond henchman not the shark!) that was discussed about one point and then got to thinking is it feasible that Jaws could be re-intrepreted for the Craig era? Would be interesting if unlikely. After all, most fans seem to be in favour of a return of the classic henchman. Maybe even pair him with Blofeld to tick all the boxes!

  • Well this is interesting. Because I can see how Blofeld could be reimagined/bought back - but, although Jaws is still alive technically, I wouldn't want them to bring back Jaws.

I was almost taken in by the proposed idea that Michael Shannon could reprise the role of Jaws. But Michael Shannon is 6.3, whereas Richard Kiel was 7.1! Shannon is not Kiel - and although villains like Blofeld, the Joker or Two Face have been reinterpreted by different actors or reimagined already - Jaws has not - and there's only one Richard Kiel!! So I wouldn't like a return of Jaws.

If they bring back Jaws, it should be done based on Jaws' inspiration, the character Horror from Fleming's TSWLM. I can see a henchman like that working rather well.
  • In a word - no. I'm all for having traditional styled henchmen but Jaws has been done. I would prefer new and interesting characters that we have not seen before.

    This isn't news.
    Moved to the right section.

First Blofeld! Now Jaws! Where will it end?
  • @lewisblake
Michael Shannon would be a great choice as Jaws if they were to bring back this character. However - I certainly don't see this happening. Maybe as a villain but certainly not Jaws. Plus - if Sam Mendes directs either Bond 24 or 25 this could be a possibility as they both worked together on Revolutionary Road. Imagine. Bond 24 directed by Mendes with Spacey as the crazed villain and Michael Shannon as his henchman. Lex Luthor and Zod battle James Bond!
  • Jaws was Richard Keil. I thought about hm coming back before but I don't think they could recast him.

Another slightly OTT henchman like Jaws/Oddjob would be cool though.

I'd still like Blofeld back since he's Bonds arch enemy and has been played by plenty of different actors.
  • Since Casino Royale was a reboot, I would love to see the return of Jaws in a future Bond film. Tom Hardy comes to mind for the role of Jaws. I say Michael Shannon would make a good Jaws.

I'd love Jaws to return, he's returned in the Bond games so I could see him fitting perfectly in a Craig era film, and besides Craig needs someone to outmatch him in a good brawl.

But Richard Keil couldn't play him.

Craig definetly needs a giant henchman though, ala Jaws, Oddjob, Necros, etc.

No but I think he could be recast with a lookalike.

I was never a big fan of Jaws to begin with. Too cartoonish, way too cartoonish for Craig's Bond, so no.But as some people said, Craig does need a physically threatening, brutish adversary at some point.
  • Are you kidding me. A return of Jaws to the James Bond series ?!

I'd sooner have Blofeld or SPECTRE return, and even then I hope they never come back and I'm quietly confident common sense will prevail and they will leave them in the past and never resurrect these past (and archaic) characters

Jaws should never have returned in 1979. It worked for Spy, but Kiel went from a tangible villain into a damn fool overnight and it's so sad in retrospect to see what they did with him. And if they brought him back (I hope it never sees the light of day), you'd imagine he's be a Jaws with a voice, as Kiel did speak in his final appearance, and they won't re-introduce him into modern age as a mute this time I don't think

By all means, introduce a big, tall menacing adversary for Bond to do battle with. But for the love of god, don't name them Jaws (again) 8-|
  • Imagine this: Bond is getting his ass kicked and it about to be shot in the head, then out of nowhere, Jaws comes in and puts his hands on the guy's head and kills him.

I know Richard Kiel looks nothing like how he did, and can't stand for too long. But, this would be a treat for fans, old and new alike.

@Craigisnotbond, one Martini too many here, I conjure... :))
  • I'd love to see Jaws in Bond 24. I'd make him a lot darker, far less comical.

If we get Jaws Back, can we at least have Crispin Glover play a Rebooted Mister Wint?

    Three Martinis...
  • Nope. I don't want Jaws back. I would like to see giant henchmen again, but never Jaws.

Because he's a LEGEND and only Kiel could play him. And I confess that while his change of heart in MR was plain silly, I was glad they spared his life again. Let's let him and Dolly alone; I'm sure they live happily ever after. :))

Only Kiel can play Jaws. He should have like a 10-15 second cameo, and then vanish as quickly as he came.

Jaws is more or less a cultural icon. Everyone knows who he is, and bringing him back appropriately can do more good than harm, provided the character stays true to TSWLM.

The Bond video games introduced him to a whole new generation of fans.

    Floor!

No Jaws and most definitely no Kiel, FFS. Have him wear those painful steel teeth again just to satisfy a few fanboys wet dreams?

Use his inspiration from the novel, or move forward.

After watching Star Trek Into Darkness, I'm more convinced that it's better to come with new villains. Jaws belongs to the Moore era. Saying that, I won't be opposed to some henchman who pays homage to Jaws in some subtle way.

Jaws was a low point in the history of the films. It would be completely moronic to bring him back.

Agreed, I like the idea of using some of the old in new ways. For instance the way Fields was covered in oil as a tribute to Goldfinger. New henchmen need to be just that, fresh faces with new creative traits. We really haven't seen a good henchmen in the Craig era but they have done some nice work in CR with Le Chiffre's bleeding eye and Silva's deformity from the cyanide gas in SF. I'm ready for a cool new henchmen but don't just recycle Jaws or Oddjob please, we deserve more.

Well I dislike the Fields homage, that wasn't exactly subtle.
  • What's with resurrecting this tired debate

It's a ridiculous idea to entertain any thought about the character returning. Say "return" as in fact, it's a damn re-boot, so in theory, we can have any blamed past character involved now, but the bottom line, Jaws should not have come back for Moonraker, never mind any idea of it now. I got no desire to see Jaws in a 21st century Bond release, along with Ernst Stavro Blofeld, or any other archaic and outdated characters you could invariably throw in for good measure. Just leave them as they are, in the dim and distant past of our collective Bond memories and don't bother to attempt to bring them back, although that last bit was aimed more at the producers than any participants on these pages

True, however, suggesting the reappearance of Jaws doesn't seem so ridiculous compared to believing there's any possibility Richard Kiel could return to the role now.
