Wait- hear me out:
What if the future Bonds were done as "B" movies (much like LTK was forced into being), perhaps shot digitally to save film costs, big giant stunts scaled down, and emphasis placed on SCRIPTS instead of spectacle?
Would YOU, as primo serious Bond fans, rather see Bond movies targeted at YOU rather than the general, action & explosion-addicted average film going audience? This way the films could still attract the portion of the non-hardcore Bond fan public that would appreciate real quality, and totally satisfy the hardcore fans like us! Trade OTT production value for OTT writing & direction...

'Art-house Bond'- what do you think? :-?

  • Less money doesn't necessarily mean a better film.

    Controversial.

Not saying more means better either. Just some people (not saying you) have this snobbish attitude that because something is made with a few million quid, it's suddenly this really deep, art-house, Oscar-winning material. I've watched god knows how many crappy art-house films. And I'll take Avatar, or any other wildly expensive (half-decent) movie over them any day.

I'm just thinking that Dr. No was made on the cheap, and it was fabulous. So was the first Star Wars. Recently "Moon" was a great movie, also inexpensive. "Serenity" was made for 40 mill, chicken feed in today's dollars, but it was epic.

Less money can sometimes force creativity.

And yeah, no one wants a 'Blair Witch-Bond', just sayin' if Bond was aimed at the right crowd for the right budget, it could be EVEN MORE profitable while shedding the need to tick the usual boxes to do well... IMO.

Yes definetley, I would leap for joy if the films focused more on story rather than kiddy action filled scripts involving villains wearing blonde wigs with false teeth.

unfortunately after seeing skyfail I sense we are heading back into the 90's era of Bond , and leaving the grittyness and simplistic format CR brought to the screen.

I don't think Casino was necessarily gritty. It had a strong story, with some emotional consequences, but it's not gritty. If anything, Skyfall is grittier. But I hate that word.

What the following Bond movies needs is a simple, yet well developed story. Budget shouldn't be bothering you, it's timeline that should concern you. I got a bit worried when they said Bond 24 would be out in 2014.

Smaller budgets can sometimes mean shorter production time...

After 2 more expensive title singers i expect Eon going to save money on the title song. No title song be opnion in my opnion to make flashbacks to CR/QOS in the maintitle.

But the movies of DC deliever so much money that there not should save money on the title singer because of there don't whant spend money, but there don't whant a (fames) singer because it sound a idea there like the idea.

Those days be there is less budget for a good villian lair and i like to see there spend more money/time on that. But some parts of QOS production design be filmd in a studio/cheaper but looks great see Hotel and Austria. Whyle there spend for Austria more money on the costume design and extra's as there did with TMND is my feeling.

Name one moment in SKYFAIL that was darker and more gritty than CR's pre-title sequence showing Craig get his first 2 kills.

you cant beat that scene. That is Daniel Craig's best and darkest scene as bond.

Severine and Bond at the bar, Severine getting raped, Severine's death. That's three. Her death was more of a game, and she was defenceless and innocent. The prologue to Casino were assigned assassinations, pretty run of the mill. (Just well shot)

    @fromcanadawithlove

So your saying Bond talking to a past abused sexually girl (severine) at a casino is grittier than bond strangling a man to death in a bathroom stall while bleeding?

When was severine ever raped in skyfail? she let bond have sex her with her in the showr.

Her death was a poorly written scene showing bond casually standing with sunglasses on while making Jokes about wasted cups of Scotch...yep thats real gritty ....no not really

but jeesh whatever your smoking please tell me

And this is what happens when you're so determined to hate a film, against reality.

Could you use spoilers for those of us waiting for a day off to go see Skyfall? Thanks.

    1. So your saying Bond talking to a past abused sexually girl (severine) at a casino is grittier than bond strangling a man to death in a bathroom stall while bleeding?

    2. When was severine ever raped in skyfail? she let bond have sex her with her in the showr.

    3. Her death was a poorly written scene showing bond casually standing with sunglasses on while making Jokes about wasted cups of Scotch...yep thats real gritty ....no not really

    4. but jeesh whatever your smoking please tell me

    1. Yes, considerably.
    2. She's a child rape victim. She was raised in a rape house. Basically, she was raped all her life. When we see her after her and bond get separated, she's bruised, bleeding, and can barely stand on her legs. Skyfall requires a bit of thought.

    3. What did you expect, tears?

    4. I don't smoke.

Mods, sorry for getting off topic.

@FromCanadaWithLove Yes she was beaten, but we never see how she was beaten. Theres no proof she was ever raped in the film, yes she was raped in her past , but she may have just been beaten up. You are making false assumptions.

I actually have to agree with @dressed to kill here in that, Bond killing Fisher was grittier or at least more violent than anything Bond did in SF. However, I think that the most violent scene in any Bond film to date is easily Bond's brutal killing of Slate in QoS.
That being said, the violence in SF was still great and in keeping with the tone of Craig's previous 2 and I can't wait to see what else we get for Bond 24/25.

TND's budget was nearly twice that of GE, was it twice as good? Did it make twice as much profit?
QOS was over twice as much as CR...
See what I'm getting at here?

Yes @doubleoego . I definitely agree with you about bonds killing of slate in QoS. I love that scene. One of the most underrated darker scenes in the franchise. If I recall I do believe bond sliced his neck? or stabbed him then blood splurted out. A great scene indeed

    @DRESSED_TO_KILL

We're totally allowed to disagree, that's why these forums are here.

I'm not suggesting that Bond did more gritty things, but that Skyfall dealt with more substantial (and effectively grittier) consequences.

I think it's cool that the writers were able to give different viewers different interpretations, but
I thought the fact that Severine was raped seemed pretty obvious.

I just don't see how a guy getting shot in a bathroom is that gritty. Sure, he was banged up a little, but it was still a bullet that killed him.

    It's all opinion.

I guess it just goes to show you more money spent doesn't necessarily mean you make more money.

@fromcanadawithlove Im not just talking about the scene where bond shoots fisher, im also referring to his bathroom fight that involved no shooting but his strangulation of his first kill. The look on Craig's face was menacing while drowning that mans head in the water

Skyfall was made for $150 million, so why not cut it by $5-10 million?

I don't see why the budget needs cut as long as the film breaks even and then some. And Skyfall has done that in spades, the very definition of success.
I don't think so, only because the Bond movies have been so amazingly successful on big budgets that, by very experience of 50 years going here, there's not much reason to try the B-movie route!
  • SF did not look money well spent to me
