I really like this. It was my first bond in the cinema and to this day it's still my favourite brosnan bond

I recently changed my view of TWINE to a more positive outlook, because the last few times I watched it, I really enjoyed it. It has Brosnan in a very confident performance, playing a Bond who can stand up to his superior, push himself to the edge of a cold-blooded kill, and murder a woman he had feelings for to finish the mission. Even apart from Brosnan, we've got a personal mission for M and MI6 originally, and then later personal for Bond. We've got a suspect who no one but Bond suspects, and a terrorist who seems to be unbeatable. In the end, we've got a Bond movie full of mystery and suspense which, when revealed, proves more exciting because we've had to wait for the outcome.
  • TWINE was a success as a typical Bond movie. The strongest part I felt about it was music...music...music... the background music is soooo cool!. When Bond is in the BMW and going to meet Elektra King, when the camera zooms out just after the snow-action sequence, and also during the action sequences. The opening jet-ski chase was the best one.

I watched some of TWINE last night and, while its a film I enoy, its something of a mixed bag. The ingrediants are all there: deception, betrayal and romance. However the script needed tightening and the plot was undermined by possibly one of the worst actresses in history.

I liked Sophie Marceau and Pierce Brosnan. They had far more of a "spark" than Brozza and Denise Richards. True its a bit melodramatic at times but the scene when he and Marceau are in bed together (lucky bastard) is...phew.

Brosnan, on the whole, was good I thought. There were times when he overacted ("there's no point in LIVING if you can't feel AALLIVE") but he carried the role fairly well IMO.

Carlyle was good but underused and, refreshingly, Judy Dench gets some time away from her office and out in the field.

So overall an entertaining but very flawed entry. It at least tries harder than its predecessor to tell a more complex story.

    6.5/10

Much as I like Daniel Craig, my friend and I would occasionally watch Casino Royale and pause the movie every so often whenever we could make Craig look hilarious. One spot to pause: When Bond is throwing the gun back at the bomb maker at the construction site. You need to pause while he's in mid-throw, but before the gun has left his hand.

Craig's a pouter, the commoners have pointed out that far more than the "pain-face".

Also, Haphazard's review - criticised Brosnan fairly strongly at times but not one mention of "pain face". It isn't that bad.

In the tunnel sequence Brosnan fires a weapon with his eyes closed, lol.

This is one of my favourite Bond movies (oh rly?) and the third best of Brosnan (First as GE, Second TND). Theme song is a great one, the story was a bit complicated for me in the beggining to understand but then i got it all. And the cast is perfect, only problem is Denise... :> as... a... Scientist... :))

TWINE is one of my favourite 'Brosnan' Bond movies - the positives - Great Bond theme - (Garbage) for me, one of the best Bond songs. Great locations, Very good PTS, Sophie Marceau made a great Bond girl/Villlainess - her 'innocent, vunerable' first half to 'bad bond girl' for the second, was, i thought played very well - and she's incredibly beautiful. It was also good to see Judy Dench get more scenes in this one..

The only negatives (suprise suprise) - Denise Richards poor acting and the whole Dr Christmas Jones thing. I've actually seen her act and look better in other films..

I think the film starts very strongly--the Bilbao sequence is taut, MI6 in Scotland interesting, the initial Elektra backstory moving. The film has more of an immersive mood than TND ever manages to achieve.

But it goes awry somewhere around the awkward ski sequence (the parahawks are none too menacing--why not just some assassins on skis?) and goes off the rails when Richards appears. It is a shame because the first thirty minutes or so are very promising.

I still do really like this.

Might stick this on later actually, haven't watched it in a while and most saturday night TV (except Match of the day) is sh*t anyway.

While I give this film a low rating it has some great scenes. The PTS is one of the best in the series, Bond disarming Zukovsky's goon at the casino and I like the fact that EoN for the first time since LTK tried to do something different even though they messed it up in their execution.TWINE is actually enjoyable for the most part but it's riddled with too much clumsiness for me to really appreciate it.

I think that, TND and TWINE has their positive points. They were made to follow the books, and be "romance like" films.
I see that Goldeneye had more action scenes, while TND didn't have a Bond vs Villain fight, and in TWINE the villain was Elektra (for my entire life i thought that it was Renard).
I think that these 2 films from Brosnan Era were a remindscence to the past Bond movies. Where there was not filled with action (like FRWL) and there was more calm, loving, and talking/conversation scenes.
  • I think TND has too much action. It's good action but the 2nd half just goes into action overload.

I disagree on TND @Sonic but I think with TWINE they did try and make things more serious and get things closer to the books, but they also mixed in plenty of comedy and gadgets which I really liked.

I'm not too sure about that. What you've just described, I believe SF fits that description but with TWINE, even though the action was a little more spaced out, it still had plenty if action, moreso than the likes of FRWL by a large margin.

    PTS
    Ski chase
    Underground bunker shootout/explosion
    Pipeline detonation
    Zukovsky's factory showdown
Bond vs Renard in the Submarine
......and bits of smaller action scenes between the above action scenes too

I agree with both of you; However many people say that TWINE and TND are the worst Bond films. And i need to disagree on that, because, these people are most common coming from the own Brosnan era, and they wanted a movie with so much action as GE had.
  • I'll go along with this. For what its worth, TWINE is a fine BOND film and lets see why: What are the elements of a good BOND film? Great locations, great looking women, good villain, good Bond, great stunts, great gadgets, sex appeal, good humor. Of course, you must have a good story/script. So lets see:
PROS= locations Bilbao Spain ( Guggenheim Museum), Istanbul, Azerbaijan, etc.
Women=Maria Grazia Cucinotta, Sophie Marceau, Denise Richards, the doctor, etc
BOND=Pierce Brosnan was a fine Bond. He owned the character. In the banker's office after the exploding gun, he has a ruthless look to him as well as in the missile silo where he was ready to execute Renard.
Stunts= The boat chase on the Thames w/360 turn, paraglider-equipped snowmobiles, BMW Z8, etc,
Villains= Renard was very good in his role, and of course Electra King
Sophie Marceau was great in her role, convincing, beautiful and deadly, she held the story together. (She has done several good films)
Sex appeal= In Bond fashion he always manages to "play" a little (just as long as he stays in touch with the good doctor)!!
Humor=Valentine is such a joy to watch, and shows at the end that he has honor. John Cleese is entertaining
TOP MOMENT= Q "I've always tried to teach you two things, 1st, never let them see you bleed, and 2nd, always have an escape plan.
CONS= Weak story, (which was Brosnan's bad luck. Aside from Goldeneye most of his films lacked a good script.) Denise Richards, not only was she wrong for the part, totally unconvincing, but she delivered her lines in an awful way. The Cigar girl would have done a much better job, and she is twice as gorgeous.
TWINE for me is a good film, enjoyable, better than the previous TND, is a film based in the James Bond way, and I walked out of the cinema satisfied. I hope you did as well. Take care
  • Just finished watching it again and I have to say even though it has it's problems, I still think this is a great top 10 Bond film.

I'm not sure if it's Brosnans best performance or not. He's good, as always he owns the role, but sometimes he overracts a bit. I think his best performance is probably DAD. In the first half (y'know, the good part) he was on fire.

As much as I dislike DAD, I agree it was Brosnan's best Bond performance.
  • Can't give TWINE enough appreciation. Best Brosnan release, may be the best Bond adventure of the 1990s, over Goldeneye for me, in fact I'm certain of it. Take away that nauseating ending with Jones and Bond in Turkey, "It's getting redder", and in fact, Richards as a whole, and it would of been so much better. Actors of caliber such as Coltrane and Carlyle, great locations and plenty of action and the best PTS in the entire franchise, and a very good theme intro from Garbage, that was anything but

It was an almost perfect end to bring to a close, 20th Century James Bond
  • Next to Octopussy, this is indeed one of the most underated of Bond films. The World is Not Enough was one of my favourites to watch growing up, and it still is. So what if it didn't have the 'traditional' Bond villain, or story structure. It had some of the series' most exciting scenes and character drama. Brosnan is in good form, and it remains quite serious in tone throughout.

I think those few supposed 'misteps' in the form of Christmas Jones and a different storytelling direction, shouldn't be the only reasons people judge TWINE unfairly. People don't always adapt to change, and are often quite thrown by it - as we learnt with Dalton's two outings as Bond. But despite the changes TLD & LTK are great James Bond films. TWINE is no different; it experiments with the formula and while not too well-recieved by the critics, remains one of the series' most entertaining IMO.
  • For me, TWINE is hands down my favorite Bond film largely in part to David Arnold's excellent score. Really didn't see an issue with Brosnan's acting tbh. I agree Denise Richards was probably not the best choice for a nuclear physicist but that's the only point where the film has a small reversal of fortune...

Watching it again after Skyfall, looks like this isn't the first time M has created a villain by someone she's supposed to protect getting captured / used as collateral / bait...

Not really sure how some have put TWINE into the same basket as DAD but to each their own...

Great PTS, good leading performance from Brosnan and a great performance by Marceau. The music and title song are good. The actual story itself is nice and intriguing for the most part and actually takes its time to build up. Denise Richards never bothered me, but I can see why people would dislike her. She's essentially just window dressing.

The film is almost just as good as GoldenEye but falls short on two key levels for me. The submarine finale is rather underwhelming and completely abandons some plot points that were heavily emphasised earlier. And the film throws a lot of the great ideas it established earlier out the window for the usual formula to tie things up neatly. Once Elektra is revealed as the mastermind, Renard just fades into the background as a glorified henchman. As well as that, some of the dialogue is horrific in parts.

That said, it's a good two hours spent. There's nothing to hate here for me, just a couple of things I would have done differently. I like the movie as a whole and it sits nicely just inside my top ten.

Very well put. I agree with your comments. I get why some of its parts annoy and could have been better but itself as a whole is good and worthy of being a top ten Bond movie.
  • The World is Not Enough was a very enjoyable film. IMO, this is Pierce Bronsan second best performance as James Bond.
