Considering how quickly Bond got rid of it, I'm confident it was just a reference.
And the reference to the concealed Beretta in Severine's thigh was to LTK as well. Pam Bouvier before DAD was the Bond girl who had one first.
SF used references intelligently and even the DB5 was shown at the moment when things are going terrible for MI6. I actually liked seeing the DB5 in the film's context much more than GE or CR.
Hi all, new to site. Just wanted to add that I think too much is read into so called references or maybe it's me with the exception of the DB5 it was too subtle to be anything other than coincidence.
"What were you expecting? An exploding pen? Sorry, we don't do that anymore." -GoldenEye
"You must be joking." -Goldfinger
Aston Martin DB5 -Goldfinger, Thunderball, GoldenEye, Casino Royale
Silva's death, knife in the back -For Your Eyes Only (possibly)
Attack on MI6 Headquarters -The World is not Enough
"Are you going to eject me?" -Goldfinger
Bond's false death -You Only Live Twice
Train fight with Patrice in the PTS -Octopussy
Baddy's False teeth - Jaws.
Dragons and Laptop skulls - Live and Let Die
DC in a towel - FRWL
Tie wiggle at the end of PTS - GE tank tie wiggle
Non-Bod reference - Bond on boat side view entering a dragon's mouth:
Enter the Dragon
Q mentioning exploding pens (GE)
1. When they said for her eyes only-for your eyes only
2. Q saying to 007: what did you expect an exploding pen?- referring to the exploding pen used in Goldeneye
When he arrives in Macau with Eve he tells her to put her hand down from her ear (Casino Royale)
Also at some point towards the start Bond says the words For Her Eyes Only.. which is pretty obvious.
I loved catching that in the film. Almost a "here we go again" moment, until she saves Bond after he climbs back up from the dragon pit.
Everyone has tied the scorpion to DAF, but there were also scorpions in the DAD opening titles (I'm sure everyone blocked it out of their memory, including me)
Also there were two deer/stag statues in YOLT right after Bond kills Henderson's assassin.
The Helicopter used in the attack on Skyfall is the same model used in the short film.
-Bond believed to be dead: YOLT/TMWTGG
-Bond being out of shape and drinking too much: YOLT
-Silva having rotten teeth because of cyanid: tbe bad teeth of Hugo Drax in MR? Okay, this one is far fetched. Still, I think the novel's Drax and SIlva have some things in common.
Licence to Kill (1989)
[Kwang and his Hong Kong agents have captured Bond]
Kwang: Who would have a signature gun?
Fallon: James Bond.
[examines the gun]
Fallon: This is the property of Her Majesty's Government. How did *you* get it?
James Bond: Piss off!
Kwang: Who ordered you to kill Sanchez?
Fallon: No one! He's a rogue agent. I've got orders to bring him back one way or another.
Kwang: We're Hong Kong Narcotics, you BASTARD!
[grabs Bond]
Kwang: Sanchez is taking us to the heart of his operations. I've been setting it up for years!
[menacingly]
Kwang: I just hope that little stunt of yours hasn't scared him off!
James Bond: [Sanchez' army is at the hideout] Get me out of these bloody things!
Fallon: No, Commander. You're a loose cannon on deck.
[prepares syringe]
Fallon: I'm shipping you straight back to London.
[Bond struggles until Sanchez' army attacks]
At the end the Hong Kong agents kill themselves with cyanide
Yes, the signature gun seemed a nod to License to Kill in Skyfall
Ejector seat quip with M (Goldfinger) "Go on, eject me, see if I damn well care"!
Early sequence in Turkey with Bond on the train seemed a little too 'Octopussy' but not quite so much fun
And if the knife in the back was not some acknowledgement to Julian Glover in For Your Eyes Only, I don't know what was
Even one of the knife throwing twins in Octopussy in East Germany even ?
The rest aren't so much references as they are coincidental occurrences in Skyfall's storyline.
I agree. I think that "Stop touching your ear" is the best reference because it is a Craig callback.
Many of us have noticed and discussed that. I believe the line is closer to "What were you expecting, an exploding pen? We don't really go in for things like that anymore."
I agree with PanchitoPistoles in believing only a few references were intentional, but the debate remains interesting.
What about "for her eyes only" after Bond removes bullet shards from chest for analyzing or Q's sarcastic exploding pen comment?
In regards to the DB5, the references that stands out to me specifically are the humorous ejector seat comment with M enroute to Skyfall and the gun/headlights during movie's climax. Reason being is because we already saw previous appearances in GE and CR.
I think many people confuse a reference to a commonplace/recurrence. A shower sex scene, Bond being tied up, those are things that will show up from time to time in a Bond movie, just like Bond walking in a casino.
I can only remember Bond in a shower with a girl twice, which was Skyfall and that most unsavory incident with Moore and Roberts in 1985. The least said the better
There may have been one other instance in the series but damned if I can remember it right now
Spent far too much time here this night, so it's a Goodnight
(will sleep easy I'm not married to Bobbitt in any event)
There was a Bond girl in a shower in TMWTGG, in CR... Then there is also a sauna (I think) in TB. Maybe not as common as a casino, but 1)it is a reoccurence and 2)in previous movies, they were not overtly memorable scenes, except in CR, where it was very different from Skyfall anyway. Bond does not get tied up in every movie either, but it happened in the past. It is something that happens more than once when the script requires it, not a reference to previous Bond stories.
