    Perhaps you can clear up something @bondtheory. I once read that Casino Royale was not even considered for the Oscars because the studio or the producers (this I don't remember) failed to send the screeners on time. Do you know anything about this?

    Wow, @Sandy this I do not know about. That would be sad, and unfortunate, if the case!

    I read the same story again recently in an article about Skyfall's possibilities, it said that this time they were not making the same mistake. If the story is true, how stupid was that?

    *Maybe original song.
    *Deakins should get a nod- The film is jaw dropping.
    *That would be great if Dan got an Actor nod, but I feel I am being too idealistic for the Oscars here.
    *Supporting actress can only go to Judi from this film if it gets a nod.
    *Supporting actor-Javier is best bet, maybe Ralph, but not likely.
    *Costume design maybe- The suits are wonderful, especially Dan (he can fill out a suit well, too).
    *Mendes may put a nod for Director, but not that likely I feel with the other competition.

    If CR got 9 Baftas, is it a good bet, SF will get as many?

    I can definetly see it getting a few Baftas. I could even see it getting acting and best picture nods there. They liked CR so I'm sure they'll like SF, and it's done really well here in the UK.

    Oscar wise I'm not expecting (or caring) much.

    Roger Deakins has won two awards for Best Cinematography on Skyfall from both the Boston Online Film Critics Association and Los Angeles Film Critics Association.

    Bad news for 'The Dark Knight Rises', very good news for 'Skyfall'. This early buzz from only two Critics Associations thus far is necessary for winning the Oscar and/or Golden Globe in this category. So far, the buzz surrounding the astonishing cinematography will also help some Oscar nominations for 'Skyfall' in other categories.

    I think chances of earning nominations for James Bond in the categories Best Original Song, Best Music Score, Best Visual Effects, Best Sound and Best Supporting Actor will rise now also because of Roger Deakins cinematography and the actual positive review buzz surrounding 'Skyfall'.

    By the way, some previous movies who won the Award in the category Best Cinematography from the LA Film Critics Association:
    --> 2000: "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"
    --> 2001: "The Man Who Wasn’t There" (won by Roger Deakins for your information ;-)!)
    --> 2002: "Far From Heaven"
    --> 2003: "Girl With a Pearl Earring"
    --> 2004: "Collateral" (2nd place: "House of Flying Daggers")
    --> 2005: "Good Night, and Good Luck" (2nd place: "2046")
    --> 2006: "Children of Men" (2nd place: "Flags of our Fathers" & "Letters from Iwo Jima")
    --> 2007: "The Diving Bell and the butterfly" (2nd place: “There Will Be Blood")
    --> 2008: "Still Life" (2nd place: “Slumdog Millionaire")
    --> 2009: "The White Ribbon" (2nd place: "The Hurt Locker")
    --> 2010: "Black Swan" (2nd place: "True Grit", won by Roger Deakins ;-))
    --> 2011: "The Tree Of Life" (2nd place: "City Of Life And Death")
    --> 2012: "James Bond 007 - Skyfall" (2nd place: "The Master")

    Now compare the above list with this one. The actual Oscar for Best Cinematography in the following years went to:
    --> 2001: "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"
    --> 2002: "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" (Nomination: Roger Deakins with: "The Man Who Wasn’t There")
    --> 2003: "Road to Perdition"
    --> 2004: "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" (Nomination: "The Girl With A Pearl Earring")
    --> 2005: "The Aviator" (Nomination: "House of Flying Daggers")
    --> 2006: "Memoirs of a Geisha" (Nomination: "Good Night, and Good Luck")
    --> 2007: "Pan's Labyrinth" (Nomination: "Children of Men")
    --> 2008: "There Will Be Blood" (Nomination: "The Diving Bell and the butterfly")
    --> 2009: "Slumdog Millionaire" (Nomination: "The Dark Knight")
    --> 2010: "Avatar" (Nomination: "The White Ribbon" & "The Hurt Locker")
    --> 2011: "Inception" (Nomination: Roger Deakins with "True Grit")
    --> 2012: "Hugo" (Nomination: "The Tree Of Life")

    CONCLUSION: It is very early, but at this stage it is a safe bet that James Bond 007 will earn his first Oscar nomination since 'For Your Eyes Only'. And that was way back in 1981 for a category that is considered less important than the Cinematography Oscar.

    Moreover, I truly believe that an Oscar win in this Cinematography category for James Bond actually feels like winning a Best Picture Oscar. Grand looks, views to a kill, luxury views and suave looking scenes are 200% James Bond. Bond earns this Oscar. And winning the Cinematography Oscar for 'Skyfall' is a big possibility now.

    I say: 4 to 5 Oscar nominations for 'Skyfall' in the categories I mentioned above. 2 of them will be a win: Best Cinematography and Best Original Song. Truly unique if this happens..but it is possible :-). 'The Bourne Ultimatum', 'The Dark Knight' and 'Inception' pulled it off as well.

    Jup ;-). Love it. But I am actually more of a 'prediction freak' hehe. I won quite some money on Oscar predictions and Eurovision Song Contest outcomes. I predicted the surprising Best Picture Oscar for 'Crash' in 2006 and the first ever Oscar win (Best Make-Up) for 'Star Trek' in 2009 ;-).

    And now the Oscar buzz is surrounding my deepest love for a particular movie icon: James Bond 007. These are truly nice times for a Bond fan hehe.

    I'm rooting for Deakins all the way! He is my new main man. Just gorgeous cinematography in Skyfall.
    I do hope Bardem is nominated (and wins) some awards, too; he deserves it.
    I'd like Judi nominated as best supporting actress; that would be deserving, too.

    In my humble opinion, there is a CHANCE of Skyfall being nominated for:

    Supporting Actor: Javier Bardem (it's an outside chance of a nomination here admittedly, and if he hadn't already won for playing a villain in No Country For Old Men I think Bardem would have had a better chance. I love Bardem in the role and I think he deserves at least a nomination, but we'll see.)

    Supporting Actress: Judi Dench (the academy loves Dame Judi, and I do believe her performance is nomination worthy. As a matter of fact, I think she has a better chance of being nominated and winning than Mr. Bardem. However, like Bardem, I see Dench's nomination as an outside chance.)

    Best Cinematography: Roger Deakins (this one is surefire, he may even get a win)

    Best Sound Mixing & Sound Editing: The Academy likes to nominate all those big action films for these two categories and I see no reason why Skyfall wouldn't be nominated here.

    Best Original Song: Assuming the song isn't disqualified for using some of the Bond theme, it's a guaranteed nomination and I wouldn't be surprised at all if it won.

    Best Original Score: The Academy loves Newman. I do like his score, not sure if it's Oscar material....but the Academy loves Newman.

    I'm feeling really good about cinematography and original song (sans disqualification) for the actual wins.

    ...and wouldn't it be something is Danny boy got nominated for playing JAMES BLOODY BOND???????????
  • Now the cinematography, unlike (imo) the score and song, deserves plenty of nominations. Good for Deakins.

    The score might be nominated for an Oscar just because it's Newman. I could see the song getting awards too.

    I think the film will get big nods at the Baftas. Best picture or maybe best British film, and I could see it getting some acting nods there too.

    Yes, I think the Baftas are a more certain bet than the Oscars for the principal categories.

    Yes, but an Oscar under your belt....is slightly better for your CV than a BAFTA no ;-)?

    I respect the Baftas much more than the Oscars. And the Baftas are much, much more likely to nominate SF in big categories.

    They're British awards (the film is huge in Britain right now) and they're less snooty (nominated Drive last year for example).

    No, you did not. Just.....in global terms, the Oscars are bigger than the BAFTA's. And as I think 'Skyfall' is doing so well globally (not only in the UK), I think an Oscar win would be much more of a delight than a BAFTA win. In my opinion.....

    I think it's fair to say that the UK has been it's biggest succes though. Highest grossing film ever over here. Most of you are stuck with Avatar as your no 1 ;)

    I'd be much more excited about SF getting a big nomination for the Baftas, than I would about it getting a music or technical nomination at the Oscars.

    Yes, me too and the chances are just much higher. It will give the film another boost and celebration. I am sure, the Bafta commitee will be generous.

    Me too.

    I'm not sure if this counts for anything but at the start of the Baftas earlier this year, they had a Bond tribute because of th 50th with Tom Jones singing Thunderball, and a nice little montage playing in the background.

    If they were too snooty to really acknowledge Bond (like I think the Oscars are) would they have gone to all that effort?

    The nominations for 'Best Cinematography' and 'Best Song' is as expected. And the buzz will go on now. Expect 'Skyfall' in these categories at the Oscars and Golden Globes for sure now. The 'Action Movie' categories I am not that much interested at.

    But what is stunning is the fact that 'Skyfall' picks up two important acting nominations for these pre-Oscar awards: 'Best Supporting Actor' for Javier Bardem and 'Best Supporting Actress' for Dame Judi Dench. And from these two actors I think Judi Dench has a slightly better chance to pick up the same category nomination at the Oscars.

    Truly interesting times :-).
