  • SKYFALL JOINS "EVOCATIONS OF A KILL"

In the sixth and final chapter of James Bond In Our Sights (entitled “Evocations of a Kill”), I discuss how some of the strengths and defining characteristics of A View to a Kill are evoked in the Bond films which followed it...At the time of James Bond In Our Sights publication, Skyfall remained a sight unseen. The film was a delight when it finally was seen…

"There seems to have been some misinterpretation of what these "evocations" imply. I am not saying that A View to a Kill has influenced subsequent Bond films any more than any other Bond film has. Or that if a subsequent film has some similarities to A View to a Kill this does not mean the filmmakers intentionally set about trying to evoke qualities of A View to a Kill. What I am saying is that there are some qualities in subsequent Bond films that reflect (or are reminiscent of) some of the strengths and defining characteristics of A View to a Kill. So the exercise in noting evocations of A View to a Kill is simply reinforcing some of its defining characteristics. There may indeed be more evocations of The Man with the Golden Gun (as an example) in Skyfall than there are evocations of View. (You could easily do your own exercise of "Evocations of For Your Eyes Only", "Evocations of GoldenEye", "Evocations of Diamonds are Forever", etc., if you so wish.)"

Thanks for this - a very interesting read indeed, JamjesBondinourSights. I've bought your book from Amazon and greatly enjoyed it. Keep up the good work. If you like, see my The Bondologist Blog at http://www.thebondologistblog.blogspot.co.uk/
to see similar devotion (to your good self) to certain overlooked aspects of the literary and cinematic Jamers Bond.

I've always been a fan of AVTAK, though its not one of the best Bond films by any means. As you say in your book, there's just something about it!
  • Thanks very much Dragonpol. So glad you enjoyed the book, and glad to read that you too have noticed that certain something about AVTAK...often pretty hard to put a finger on, but as you'd know, that's often the point where you need to sit down and put thoughts onto paper (or onto a screen).
And thank you for providing the link to your Bondologist Blog. It looks great: I look forward to reading your articles, and really appreciate that you too are looking at some of the perhaps overlooked qualities of the James Bond legacy.

    Hi Andrew,

Was wondering if you could give us any advice on how to publish a book on XLibris - something along the lines of The Bondologist Book?

You can send me a Personal Message if you prefer, as I'm very interested in this particular area!

Hi Brian, glad you liked the personal touches - the book photos were taken from a San Francisco trip in August 2012. Interestingly, when taking my personal items through security at City Hall, the security man took a close look at the book and was well aware AVTAK had had some interior and exterior shots taken at City Hall. His interest in the book was a bit of a bonus to the trip to City Hall.

More than happy to. And a Bondologist Book sounds a great and exciting idea!
I'm going to start looking through my initial emails with xlibris to remind myself of some of the finer points of print-on-demand. Basically, there's a range and level of services - for a price of course - whether it be layout, editing, marketing, etc. I'll contact you soon anyway via Bondologist Blog, and let you know what my experiences have been. Cheers!
