I think we could say that with a certain confidence. The great thing about writing spy fiction is that you live the adventure fictionally on the page, without risking all that danger found in the real life job. When I write my espionage stories I do just that, living through my characters, their fears, emotions, solaces, all of it. I think about the things that would interest me on the job, yet also make me sick to my stomach and incorporate that to add dimension to the characters and make them relatable above anything. When you get all your thoughts on paper you can often make some truly engrossing story lines that surprise even yourself. I have been trying to write another story (it has been a long time since my last one), but don't really have much time to focus on the writing process enough at this point in my life.
The other part which i most agree is the first two lines you wrote. We can imagine all of that when we are writting or reading, and we will have no harm for that. With the imagination running out, the ideas can maybe get even better.
