My biggest concern is not so much Mendes leaving (hopefully back for Bond 25) but the probable loss of Roger Deakins as DOP. He more than anyone helped make Skyfall the classic Bond flick it has become.

Precisely. I would love if Phil Meheux returns - eveyone mentions Campbell for the sucess of GE and CR, but Mr. Meheux was just as important in giving those films the Bond look.

With Mendes leaving, does this also mean Thomas Newman is leaving, and the return of David Arnold???

Arnold is good and great when he can be bothered but there's no denying, the man knows how to weave and incorporate the theme into the score which imo is very important for a Bond film. Arnold gets this.

I like Nolan but I think he's too big a name for them to hire. If he was hired though, I think he'd need a 2nd unit director for the action scenes (I don't think action is his strong point and the Bond movies rely on action a fair bit).
--> Joe Cornish ('Attack The Block', 1 BAFTA nomination

I think he's a great choice. He's only done one movie though, maybe wait and see what he does next before hiring him.
  • I didn't care for Campbell that much, it's all relative. Though I'd have thought the cinematographer on his two films is an unsung hero.

He only seems to do the reboots, and he leaves it in such a way that it's hard for this successor to know where to take it.

  • Allthough he directed one of my favourite SciFi movies, 'Gattaca', I think all his movies after that one, like 'Simone', 'In Time', were quite mediocre. I think he's more of a screenplay writer also ('The Truman Show' was a wunderfully penned screenplay by him). He's also directed the upcoming Twilight-rip-off, SciFi movie 'The Host'. No, he wouldn't be my choice for Bond 24.

I agree on S1MONE...but I think his other films (including LORD OF WAR) all have interesting qualities that would make him an interesting choice. I am not sure about his upcoming film THE HOST though...I think its going to get trashed because of the "...from the author of TWILIGHT..." I think the fact that he is also a screenwriter is a strong point...Im pretty sure that the next director is going to be someone we haven't even mentioned!...

I thought ATB was ok, but Cornish is someone who loves genre cinema. I'd be hesitant about Cornish for much the same reason I wouldn't want Edgar Wright. Both of them would be perfect directors for something such as Mark Millar's 'The Secret Service', but a Bond, especially a 21st century Bond is a different beast.

My list and I can gaurentee half these names will be knocked out by bond fans but C'est la vie

Tony Gilroy (American directed Bourne Legacy which I saw and loved as well as Michael Clayton which I wanna see) Legacy was great but felt rushed With a script from John Logan (perhaps cowriting it) could produce a great Bond Thriller

Pierre Morrell Loved Taken and would love to see him direct a Bond film

    That is all for now

Pier Morrell proved his skills with Taken , he created such a gripping story and heart pounding action . Perfection if you ask me

As far the Roger Deakins thing goes, I wouldn't hold your breath. Deakins had to be convinced to do SF, he has said he would otherwise have had no interest to do Bond, it was the Sam factor that won him over. In a recent interview when the film came out, Deakins said he enjoyed making the film but he wouldn't do another one.

It's not his sort of thing, I imagine everyone wants to work with the guy and I think the project is the most important thing to him.
  • I'd like to see Andrew Niccol direct Bond 24
    Or maybe Duncan Jones

Glad to see someone else mentioning Andrew Niccol. I mentioned him a few posts back and he has also worked with Roger Deakins on IN TIME!

    check out 1min26sec into trailer

Yea "In Time" is a very outstanding and original, plus it gots a Bondish flow to it..but I guess you gotta be open mind to notice..some people want big time actors and directors to be apart of Bond franchise. We need new blood.
  • Hmm...if we w/ant to keep Deakins involved here are some directors he worked with:

    Coen Brothers (Hell yeah!)
Edward Zwick (Worked with Craig in Defiance and Logan with Last Samuari)
Andrew Niccol (Popular choice here: probably would want some input on script)

Personally, here are my top 5 replacement candidates

    1. Edward Zwick - He's underrated but he has worked with all the principle actors/main crew before. He's had a good track record with Last Samauri and Blood Diamond, and like Mendes is very involved in terms of character development as well as transitioning good scripts onto screen.

    2. Christopher Nolan - He's a fanboy of the series and no doubt will continue the trend that Mendes set with Skyfall. Of course, it will most likely require a large transition between Cast and Crew, and I'm more interested in him rekindiling the formula with a new Bond rather than tying loose ends with Craig

    3. Danny Boyle - Again, he's a solid director that benefits from a good script. I'm interested to see how Trance does before re-evaluating the choice.

    4. Ralph Fiennes - Why Not? Coriolanus definitely showcase his talent for action and inventive ideas.

    5. Martin Campbell - This is a fallback choice ;)

Wow, I had no idea that Deakins worked with Zwick on 'Blood Diamond.' That's one of my favorite films. There's a good duo, in my eyes, for an upcoming Bond film.
  • Deakins didn't lense BLOOD DIAMOND it was Eduardo Serra...

I think the original poster was noting that Ed Zwick had worked with DC and John Logan.

I think you're all missing a trick here. EON ought to offer the next film to Stuart Baird. He's not only a damn good editor, he has directed some big films and REALLY wants to do a Bond. He's British, knows the subject well and would bring a style, pace and excitement to the film. He would also be acceptable to the studio, would take a realistic salary (they would not offer him a profit share) and knows the existing team.

Danny Boyle is a non-starter just as is Christopher Nolan. They're too independent.
  • Anyway...who ever gets given the directors role I can just imagine Ralph Fiennes turning to them and telling them "Don't cock it up"...

I wouldn't let Morel anywhere near a Bond film, I was one of those who was flabbergasted the praise Taken got, it was like a Commando rip off without the camp and no humour.

How about Paul McGuigan? He did such a great job with Sherlock. To be honest one of the most sensible and even possible not like Nolan, Spielberg or god forbid Cameron is Kenneth Branagh, it would come down to if he wants to return to the spy genre after Jack Ryan but he seems like a strong possibility.

I think the days of promoting 2nd unit directors is long gone, they had a an Oscar winner helm Skyfall they will be at least looking for someone with some weight and pedigree behind them.

I know some of you like John Glen but for me he made some pretty pedestrian looking films, the Dalton's were good because of Dalton and the Moore ones just look so dated and ordinary, his best work was 2nd unit on OHMSS. Lets face it only Bond fans champion Glen, he's a nice bloke but he's never going to get any prizes for originality or style, although I'm forgetting some of you want nothing particularly special as long as we have our boxes ticked and the cliches are all intact.

So I can't see Baird being promoted, they'll want a name I guarantee it, I'm not saying they are necessarily right but Babs & Mike aren't going to take a step backwards for the follow up to their first billion dollar grossing entry and hire some no name to helm Bond 24.

I wouldn't mind that. His action sequences in both of the 'Sherlock Holmes' films are beyond fantastic, so if he managed to fit another fist fight scene in there somewhere, I would be more than happy.

    ummmm,..... THIS! L-)
  • I would actually be interested in what Branagh could bring. A counter-intuitive choice, but I thought he did well with Thor. A simple story very well told, and like Mendes could bring some good talent along with him.

I didn't think the direction of the Sherlock Holmes films was anything special (and visually they were too gimmicky) BUT I would like Stephen Moffat to have a shot. He's proven with his work on Doctor Who and Sherlock that he can re-energize old staples, has a very interesting and dynamic visual style, and can create a fantastic balance between humour, tension, and character work. I'd LOVE for him to get a shot.

Yes - Zwick worked with Logan in Last Samauri and DC and Deakins in Defiance.

Nice to see that Craig and Deakins have worked together before SF, then. Very cool.

Bad news if you ask me. Quite bad. They -Barbara and Michael- could have offered Sam millions more for a Bond 24 release in 2015 or 2016. It also means that other crewmembers, like Thomas Newman, Roger Deakins and many others are less likely to join. Which would be a bloody shame.

BUT, I already have a fantastic idea: All options are open now to bring Christopher Nolan onboard as Bond 24 director. He would be thrilled to do one...or two! I suggest EON Productions starts negotiations with Christopher Noland ASAP.

Moreover, Christopher Nolan is a tremendous famous name and it could assure another high quality, Oscar worthy, 1 Billion Dollar Bond film. Plus Nolan is a huge Bond fan himself. So bring him in!

No surprise here. Mendes obviously didn't seem keen even after he'd seen how well the film was doing.

Yeah, Nolan is the perfect choice to helm a Bond film. If Eon doesn't want him I just couldn't understand why. He can do drama, thrillers and action. If both of them are keen I wonder if it might be a good idea to try and secure him in for two. I suppose there could be a clause in the contract where by if the first one didn't do well, Eon could get rid of him. Not that this seems fair. Don't know as much about this commerce side of the business.

@Bounine, the main reason Nolan isn't the 'perfect choice' is because many feel he will want too much control over the script, production, etc. that they just won't allow him to have. Plus, I've read online a good bit than many people loathe his fight sequences.
