Is Red 2 paying hommage to Octopussy?

edited July 2013 in Bond Movies Posts: 224
On the 30th anniversary of "Octopussy", out comes a Bruce Willis film, "Red 2". It's about a hidden nuclear devise, threatening to go off and, of course, kill millions. M16 is in the movie. There is a link to Russia. And Steven Berkoff has a role, though a small one.

I liked the movie, very much (even more than the original "Red"). I highly recommend it.

This sounds very interesting and in keeping with @Perdogg's recent post. Is it just out in the cinemas, @Ellis?

I think it may have been a mistake on the part of @Ellis. How about moving it to Films, @DarthDimi?

    Sorry about the misplacement.

Yes Dragonpol, it just came out. I saw it Saturday.

Will probably wait to get it on DVD - I love apparent homages like this.

FYI, the movie also stars John Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker, Helen Mirren, Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Not seen the first movie, is it worth a watch?

Not really, @Fire. It's pretty awful apart from Karl Urban. This sequel looks a right stinker to me. Could be we're adding it to the roster of other tent-pole flops this summer?

@ bondsum Yeah i got that impression from the first movies trailer, did not grab me at all so i avoided it.

It started off 5th at the box office this week. "Yahoo users" gave it 4 stars out of 5.

I don't know how relevant and reliable Yahoo users are as they've never been mentioned here or anywhere else before. Hang on, I'll just check how many have voted for it. Looks like it's 77 people which isn't a big enough endorsement for me. If I was to go by Rotten Tomatoes, which a lot people round here seem to rely on, it's got a very disappointing 39%.

I'd wait to catch this on TV or free inflight entertainment. Looks like The Conjuring is the clear winner this week.

I thought that the first one was okay, it was entertaining enough. Of course it helped that my expectations were low. When I heard about a sequel it seemed unnecessary though. I didn't know that Berkoff was in it. That's interesting.

I quite fancy this as I did enjoy the first one. Will post my thoughts once I have seen it?

I just might go see this in the cinema. I thought the first one was not very good, but I did like Helen Mirren and Karl Urban very much. Helen is in this one, and after all it is just a lightweight movie, so it may be fun. Whenever I do see it, I'll see if Octopussy resonates at all for me while watching it.
  • Shame Connery couldn't be lured back for a cameo. Or maybe not if it's rubbish.
  • The first one was very good. The second one doesn't look quite so good.

Bruce Willis is back to being awkward. Here's round two:
