Whose idea was it to cast Brosnan as Bond?

There is a bit of the TV actor about Brozzer though.

I have been saying that for years.

Brosnan did abit of stagework at the end of the seventies but not much. He went to try his luck in Hollywood in 81/82 and has done TV or film work ever since and it shows. Sean, Tim and Dan did hard work at the granite face of theatre for years and you can tell in their performances.

Pierces gorgeousness and attractiveness to women opened doors for him quickly. I am sure he had periods of struggling but his performances in most films are TV performances. I watched The Ghost - a thinly disguised portrayal of Tony B-Liar and it was all at one level. Adam Lang/Tony Blair is a fascinating character of a man once worshipped and now due to decisions is despised by the world for causing the deaths of thousands.. Something he struggles with. There is real pathos there.

But I got none of that from Pierce. It was a TV movie of the week performance.

What I am saying is that he got a good role and didn't do it justice.

    exactly

One of the best pieces of acting I've seen Pierce give is at the end of "Love is All You Need". It was one time when I really felt for both him and the main female character. Granted the film deals with a subject close to him personally, but even so its hard to believe this was the same person who starred in Taffin.

While most of us can agree Broz probably isn't the best of actors the opportunity of Bond did allow him get bigger roles and develop as an actor.

Watching some of his pre-Bond work it's fair to say they DIDN'T cast him for his acting - more his popularity at the time with audiences and, in particular, Americans. Similar to what they did with Moore in the 70s,

(IMO he's better in Goldeneye than a lot of his crappy TV style movies before Bond).

    I'll agree there.
IMO there are three kinds of Bond movies- Flemingesque, tongue-in-cheeky Bond, and Big OTT spy extravaganzas. Broz was a perfect choice for the latter group.

Brosnan wasn't even famous when Cubby met him in 1980/81.

True, but Cubby saw something in the young Broz. I bet he smiled at Pierce, told him he'd keep him in mind for a time after he started shaving for real & gave him a lollipop. :))

No he wasn't. He'd done The Long Good Friday and a few other small roles but that was it. RS didn't start until around 1985 as far as I know. I still prefer him as Bond to Steele funnily enough (I remember my mum described him as having lego-hair back then haha).

2nd season of Steele was pretty fun.

I've only seen a few episodes of the first season. Not really my thing.

First season was pretty *meh*. 2nd was way cool. 3rd was better than first, but not as good as 2nd. After that it lost me.

I thought all the seasons up until season 5 were good. Season 5 was Dung.

It's funny, I'd never seen RS until relatively recently so could never relate to the criticism that "he wasn't Bond...he was Remington Steele".

Same here. Though I like His Bond and Remington Steele equally.

Four was definitely watchable, but the spark was fading. Poor Pierce, you could tell he was trying hard, but season 5 was kind of sad. I had to see it for completion's sake, but the fun was mostly gone...

I'd never even heard of Brosnan when he was cast. I got the impression he was not widely known in the UK. By contrast, Dalton was relatively well known in the UK - and regarded as a bit of a hearthrob for his performance in Jane Eyre.

It's a shame Everything or Nothing didn't exist in movie form.

Brosnan was somewhat famous in the US, not a star but a relatively known actor. He based all his pre-Bond career on his future Bond role.
  • Was very glad to see EON on BBC America the other day, and have watched it 3 times already. We Americans still can't get a DVD it appears :(

What I wrote about Brosnan in another thread: Brosnan was only somewhat known as the actor who could have been, should have been and/or would be James Bond. In fact he pretty much based his pre-Bond career and fame (what he had then) on the role he didn't have yet.

I wished we could have seen a Brosnan's Bond around 1991 playing in "Casino Royale", if they had the rights at that time. So, before "GoldenEye". And yes, Cubby's idea was a good one.
  • To be perfectly honest I wouldn't mind Brosnan if he didn't always seem zoned out and unengaged in all his performances. I still laugh every time when I watch the bit in TND when he goes "You picked the right corrupt western agent blah blah blah" at how bad Brosnan delivers it. He's okay though, and not my least favourite. Dalton, Craig and Connery are all superior actors and Bonds, and even Lazenby felt a little less like a carboard cutout of James Bond. At least I prefer Brosnan over Moore, but then again, I prefer David Niven over Moore.

I will be honest in saying I sympathize with Brosnan's situation in the 80's. This past summer I auditioned for a band that tours the US and Canada every year and made one of the best albums I've ever heard. It went really well, and I'm never going to know for sure but I think I had it in the bag. But just as things were pulling together, the guy they had tour with them earlier decided he wanted to make it a long term thing.

They made the right decision, absolutely, any band would do the same. But I still sorta had the emotional crash a month or two later and every day go "What if..." to no avail. i'm very supportive of them, though, I saw them live on Halloween and listen to the album on a weekly basis. Much more than can be said for Brosnan who didn't even watch Dalton's. So now I await another opportunity elsewhere.

Did Brosnan really never see the Dalton movies? Says a lot.

And yet Dalton, Moore and even Lazenby went to see DAD at the premiere. Wonder if they complimented Brosnan on the film? ;)

Bet they loved it! ;) Dalton and Laz both need any public exposure they can get - they'd show up for the opening of an envelope.

Strange. I've often smiled when I've heard that line. Maybe I'm just crap at reading body language ;)

I would say your description applies to the bit in DAD when he says "right now I'm only interested in endangered specicies". He seems somewhat disinterested.

Where's all this about Brosnan not watching Dalton's films come from? He said at the GE press conference he admired what he did with the character and in the James Bond unmasked book he said that Dalton "played it right down the fucking line".

Seems like he's seen them to me. Apparently he hasn't seen Craig's first two but he loved SF.

He said somewhere that he could not see them when they first came out, as he was bitter because the part slid out of his hands. He probably saw them all when he was cast, as a preparation.
He said exactly the same thing about the first two Craig films. Could not stand seeing them as again he was too bitter.

Well, I managed to see all of the Brosnan films, and as much a waste of time as that was, I am not bitter for it.
