Exactly 1/2 through DMC and liking it a lot.
  • Yesterday I purchased Thunderball and The John Gardner James Bond Collection which includes "5 Classic Bond Stories" it includes Icebreaker, Licence To Kill, Death Is Forever, GoldenEye and COLD. From what I've heard they aren't nearly as classic as Gardner's first half. Thoughts?

My Bondathon has almost grind to a halt as of late, but I'm currently reading Carte Blanche. I didn't like it the first time around, and I still don't. Bond is so passive, it's sickening.

found a copy of TND by Benson and as it is hailed as one of the better novelisations I thought I might give it a go.

I'm about half way through volume 5 of the James Bond Omnibus. Part of a great comic strip series that should end this year with volume 6.
  • I've decided that when my exams are over I'm going to start a literary marathon from CR-the end of Fleming.

    Thunderball
Well I'm nearing the end of Fleming's list of books but at least the quality hasn't dropped. Thunderball is by Ian Fleming based on a screenplay by Kevin McClory, Jack Whittingham and Ian Fleming. Its a good book but some of the characters are a little bland. The plot is great and the return of Leiter in a big role is greatly appreciated.

Just finished You Only Live Twice, and once again I am reminded of the of the missed opportunity by the filmmakers to do something quite different with a Bond film. A lot of the book gets bogged down in tourist and cultural detail, but the Castle and King of Death sequences are atmospheric, creepy, and dangerous. Bond killing Blofeld with his bare hands is so primitive and very personal.

I've posed the question before if it is time to remake a couple of the films. No surprise at the overwhelming negative response. I am one of the original Bond fans, but it still wrankles when I think of the missed opportunities in terms of filming sequence and story.

Now that the series has been rebooted, no one really knows if the past is prologue.
We now have an entirely new generation of viewers who haven't even seen some of the early Bond films. TB and NSNA are the same film with the same actor, and they both work for me (except the crap music in NSNA.) I don't even pretend to rationalize that or any kind of chronology in the Bond films.

As far as I am concerned, several of the original Fleming novels have yet to be filmed.
    It's high time they were.

Currently reading LALD, enjoying is so far and it has the same quality and high standard of CR, I think the scenes which were used for LTK invovling Felix and some shark munching were nicely adapted.

CR and LALD seem to be of a higher standard than the previous books I've read (DR, GF, TB and YOLT) though I will revisit these as I work my way through all the novels!

Just finished Moonraker, I would probably say the best I have read so far, the whole segment at Blades is just superb and really love the segment where Bond first arrives at Drax's and the whole uneasy feeling around. A very different feel with no glamorous locations etc but a great book and indeed the film of the same name is a massive missed opportunity.

    Now onto Diamonds are Forever!
  • At the moment I'm reading Casino Royale again and I do that because the topic of my final exam is James Bond. Best topic ever!!! :D
  • I just recently ordered Licence Renewed so Im going to jump into Gardner's Bond soon.....

I take it back- HIGHLY recommend "Moneypenny Diaries" series.
  • Reading some of the John Gardner novels...
It is very apparent that his books were heavily influenced by the films (multiple girls, one of which dies, megamaniacal villain, big shoot out in the end)... b-(

That's why I can't get into the Gardner books - trying to please both camps and failing!

I wanna have them! I want them for years, but never bought them...
  • I just read the novol "Solo" by William Boyd and it was really good. It was nice to read, with many twists and it was exciting. Great novel. :)

Currently coming to the end of Diamonds are Forever, I would have to say a dip in quality from the first three books but still a good read.

I agree. I actually think it's the weakest of all of the Fleming Bond novels.
I don't know about that. I just finished DAF for the first time and I found it interesting. Because it was so different from the film I was able to enjoy the plot because it had never really been done to heart before, and I will say that at the end I was in suspense over what would happen to Tiffany. In the film I know that they both survived, but the book gave me the distinct impression that she was going o die and when she didn't, I felt that she and Bond had formed a very close relationship that is unheard of in the other books...

I'm an ardent DAF fan. TSWLM is by far the weakest effort, then TMWTGG - which is still enjoyable.

Re-reading Thunderball and enjoying it much more than before. A funny parallel with disappearance of the Malaysian flight and the Vindicator ;)
  • I´m half way through LALD for the moment. I´m reading them for the first time, and I just love CR! I think it´s a wonderful book, and I doubt that any other book, will ever beat CR. I´m also waiting on a signed copy of Boyd´s "Solo"! :)

its just Bond spends the first 2 chapters doing nothing except wasting his birthday away on various Going about town which for a short story Fine I love 007 in New York and Quantum Of Solace (short story) for that reason alone but when it comes to full blown novel I want to be sucked into the world...
