Have you ever watched a morally corrupt film?</font></center>

And of course please talk about it if you have. :-)

Something that made you think: this is all wrong, this is a step too far. Could be anything really. ;-)

    The Human Centipede.

Those who have shared the experience will know why.

Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma (1975) by Pier Paolo Pasolini

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073650/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

It is about evil but is awefull to look at, I saw part of the movie and had to leave the cinema being physical sick and mentally disgusted. I have read what the movie is about but watching it is another thing.

@Tokoloshe, it is a pretty one-step-too-far film, isn't it? ;-) Have you watched the sequel?

@SaintMark, wow, I didn't know the film but from what I've read on imdb, I'm not sure I'm willing to test the stability of my stomach.

My choice would be Borat and pretty much everything else SBC puts out, including The Dictator. I don't think those films are particularly funny. Or let me rephrase, I find the few moments that do work too few and too little in comparison to the revolting mess of the rest of the film. Making fun of people is one thing but without any context, substance or clearly defined purpose, it all becomes a chaotic collection of unpleasant trash. Shocking for the sake of it, and including themes of paedophilia and such, just doesn't do it for me. I am familiar with exploitative films and I can still digest them if they are fiction and offer OTT blood and gore. But Borat most often positions the camera in real events and just purposelessly insults people without even a little sense of restraint. And meanwhile SBC actually thinks I'm laughing? Nah, it's a bit too much.

#11 Not a fan of either, and Doctor Who is better than both Star Wars & Star Trek.

#12 Umm... Last House On The Beach, to name one. The remake of Teh last House On The Left was vicious.

Pain and Gain possibly. That made me feel kind of uncomfortable.

I would say the same as BAIN123, Pain & Gain.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre & Hostel were very much lacking in morals, and if I never see them again....good.

"morally corrupt" are strong words. For me, no I haven't.
I avoid slasher films, gore heavy films, films that I know beforehand will look at depravity or abuse. So no ... I really haven't seen any for this category.
I've yet to see A Clockwork Orange (because I don't want to be scarred from it) but my understanding is that it is, overall, an anti-violence message. But I don't think I could stomach it.
I would never want to see extreme torture or even animals getting hurt. Let alone snuff films or anything glorifying abuse of children; abuse in general. So I rather protect myself ahead of time if I can. I am not one to challenge myself to see if I can manage to watch a film with a high level of explicit violence for example. I find nothing of merit in doing so.

I would not classify its message as anti-violence, more like a satirical poke at what we believe civilization to be, and what it really isn't.
It's pretty brutal, and Alex is the absolute definition of ANTI-hero to me. There is not an intentionally decent bone in his body.

  • Don't think I've really thought of any film as morally corrupt before. Naming films made by morally corrupt directors starring morally corrupt actors might be easier (though of course thoroughly subjective). I honestly suppose the last film I might have called morally questionable from my personal point of view would be Project X, though had I found that film remotely interesting in any other sense I guess I would have no objections.

But otherwise I agree with @SaintMark. I find Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma as disgusting as compelling, a truly disturbing piece of powerful filmmaking I rather hope never to see ever again. Cannibal Holocaust might fit a somewhat similar bill too.

Also a french film called Baise Moi. Not too far off sadistic hard core pornography from what I remember. Two women are brutally raped by men and go on a vengeful killing spree.

Coming closest to being morally questionable for me would be Spielberg´s Catch me if you can. Di Caprio´s character hustles himself on the pilot seat of a filled passenger plane, thus putting all those lives at risk, yet throughout the film, he somehow comes across as some kind of carrier of sympathy. I felt a bit put off by that.

Your choice is original I must admit, and yes very often the choices made by hustlers are morally questionable. But in this instance you know that the main character in this film is going to fall sooner or later and that justice gets done.

Paradoxically, I feel a lot of sympathy for the law-breaking protagonists in Heat, whose agenda could also be labeled morally questionable.
And of course Dexter is a fine example of a morally questionable protagonist who manages to catch the audience´s sympathy to an impressive degree.

    "Hotel New Hamphshire"
I consider that 1984 mishmash based on a novel to be very corrupt. Full of rape, incest, bestiality, murder, suicide, and death. "

"Martyrs" should not be watched by anyone --ever.

I've always had issues with Tarentino.

I started to do just that, then couldn't be bothered ;-)

I don't have an issue with his obvious love and deep knowledge of low brow cinema, and his tendency to call on it to help enhance his own films. A bit of plagiarism is a good thing if it broadens peoples understanding and appreciation of cinema.

I love some of his dialogue scenes, and he constructs many scenes and situations like classic French cinema of the 60s where scenes go off on tangents and characters drift in and out for no apparent reason.

I do have an issue with the way he gives murder erotic qualities and appeals to baser instincts. He can't just kill a cop, he has to humanise the cop first, give him a wife and kids, makes us like him, want him to survive, and then blows him away casually.

It can be argued that it's better to understand the true impact of murder if the character is humanized first, rather than the indiscriminate slaughter of dozens of young men we don't know or care about (eg the PTS of Goldeneye), but Tarentino isn't asking us to be sad at the cops death, he wants us to whoop and laugh at this scene, because to him it's the punchline to his joke. He clearly doesn't like or respect the police and it comes out in his work. And he must get some kind of perverse kick out of his writing.

@NicNac I quite agree with you on QT's need for violence to look cool and that message always annoys me with his movies.

I saw the Postman Pat movie with my 4yr old son a few weeks ago, which tops any of those. Drugs, sex and violence on an unprecedented scale in the village of Greendale. I can't recommend it enough.

What about The Magic Roundabout? That was always rather controversial.

If you want to talk about TV shows then I would add
    Sons of Anarchy
This show about a rebel biker gang that commits murder, homicide, kill and is not short on the sadism. One guy even stuck his tongue out and smashed his chin on the table effectively cutting it off. Friggin sick.

I know this is about movies but I had to add this tidbit after seeing @Tokoloshe post.

@M_Balje, please don't take this the wrong way but I have doubts you understand what morally corrupt means. The Pacifier? Speed? The Dark Knight? If those are morally corrupt films, watching Tom & Jerry could be considered an act of terrorism. :D

Is that your reaction to Balje's eccentric spoutings or this whole question in general Willy old son?

Personally I find anything starring Vin Diesel morally repugnant so I'm with Balje here.

This whole thing is starting to come across a bit Mary Whitehouse to me but if you want a seriously dodgy film then, although I haven't seen it myself, I have had several people recommend 'A Serbian Film'.
