1) Predator 2 (just so awesome in its concept & execution)
2) Predator (so close to being #1 for me)
3) AVP (lots of fun in the unrated version)
4) Predators (okay copy of Predator with interesting tweaks)
5) AVP: Requiem (nice for a low budget indie version, but a bit raw)

    1. Predator (best of the bunch- so much testosterone. I'll watch this film ANYTIME)

    2. Predators (I was surprised how much I liked this- let's see Brody lose the plot like Fishburne)
    3. AVP (has some great ideas/moments, but we never really care about the cast)
    4. Predator 2: Yautja in the City was inevitable- not a bad film, plus the Alien easter egg was a nice touch

    5. AVPR (awesome PredAlien concept, but I couldn't see much of what was happening- the film was so dark)

Wow, @chrisisall, you may be the only person I've ever seen rate Predator 2 over Predator. I'm all for unusual film preferences and am usually fascinated when someone sees something in a film that the majority of viewers don't (personally I hold A View to a Kill in quite high esteem and would defend its merits to the bitter end ;) ). I probably like Predator 2 more than a good deal of people out there, so I can kind of see where you're coming from, but if you don't mind elaborating, what specifically about the film's concept and execution do you find so rewarding?

As for myself, my own list matches yours entirely except that I have 1 and 2 switched.

I've only seen Predator, but that was quite a long time ago now.
I was thinking about getting into the Predator/Alien franchises: which film from either would you recommend?

    Better make that three :-)!
But the first Predator is still the best, because Jesse Ventura ain´t got time to bleed and Bill Duke is over here and bleeds ya real quiet.
I would even say Predators is a tad better than Predator 2, because of the mini gun running empty.
Which doesn´t mean Predator 2 is in any way lacking.
    I ignore the rest.

@MayDayDiVicenzo, get the big Alien box set with the nine hours of extra material, it´s worth it! And I say that as a guy who doesn´t really like the bleakness of such kind of films.

Well, actually, 1 & 2 are almost equal for me. The first is THE FIRST, and has so many great lines, and the whole claustrophobic feel of the jungle & the AWESOME final confrontation at that fabulous location... the second takes place in the near messed-up future, the characters are more diverse, the whole "no killin' what can't be killed" weirdness from King Willy, the alien easter egg, and again, an awesome ending showing how long they've been at it here on Earth. I guess maybe the first really is better, since without the first, the second would lose a lot of its impact.

Those are many of the same things I like about it: transplanting the setting to the "urban jungle," the way the violence of the gangs and the voodoo practices mirror the primal warrior nature of the yautja, expanding on what we know of the yautja's hunting culture, foreshadowing the inevitable crossover with the Alien films. Not a perfect a film, but they definitely took it in the right direction.

Predator (9.5) - Untouchable. 80's action sci/fi at it's finest. It has a few flaws, but the flaws that are there are negated by the awesomeness of the rest of the movie.

Predator 2 (8.5) - Not as classic as the original and Glover doesn't have the same believability to kill a predator like Arnold does, but it's still a very solid and enjoyable Predator film. the multiple predators at the end were TEETS!

Predators (6.8) - While fun and worthy of the Predators franchise, it has many glaring flaws in Yautja behavior and the lack of characters we can attach to bring this film down quite a bit.

AvP:R (5) - I enjoyed seeing this Predator kick all kinds of ass, but it seemed a bit too effortless and everything else sucked. The only reason it gets a 5 is because it restores some dignity to the idea of a Predator after AvP basically raped it.

AvP (3) - A monstrosity of a Predator film. By FAR the worst representation of the predators on screen....nuff said.

Is this based on the theatrical version? 'Cause the unrated version was a good deal better IMO.

I have seen just the theatrical version. But maybe I should watch the unrated one.

It's not like it's a totally different film or anything, but they did have to take out and tone down quite a bit to hit that all important PG-13. The unrated version is at least de-pussified. :))

    1. Predator
    2. Predator 2
    3. Predators

    ***some distance***

    4. AVP
    5. AVP Requiem

The first AVP is OK though the second I think is terrible.

Quick question: am I the only one whose copy of AVP Requiem is so dark you can hardly make out at times what's on screen? I mean, seriously, it's like in order to hide wires and digital 'stains' they just let the brightness drop from normal to almost zero.

Well, I could pretty much make everything out, but it IS very dark.
  • Predator
    Predators
    Predator 2
    AVP
Yet to watch the last one.

Predators was very good indeed - loved it in fact.

    1. Predator (1987)
    2. Predators (2010)
    --
    3. Predator 2 (1990)
    4. AvP: Alien vs Predator (2004)

Requim doesn't make the list, because I have not seen it.
  • 1) Predator
    2) Predator 2
    3) AvP (not great but it entertained me more than Predators did)
    4) Predators

Requiem is so crap that it doesn't deserve to be ranked with the rest of them. While I'm at it I'm going to rank the Alien films as well.

    1) Alien/Aliens (I always have trouble deciding between them)
    2) Alien Isolation (it's a game but it's really good, so good that I think it deserves to be ranked with the films and above the sequels; as far as I'm concerned Alien 1, 2 and Isolation are a trilogy, the sequels don't count)

    3) Alien 3/Alien Ressurection (again I can't choose but this time it's because I don't enjoy either of them).

Unfortunately it wasn't dark enough for me not to understand what was going on, but yeah, this was an incredibly dark film. For a film combining two major franchises like this, AVP:R was startlingly amateurish throughout nearly all aspects of production. I remember there being some nice photography in the woods during the daylight and Brian Tyler's score rocks, but seriously, that's it. Oh yeah, and I like how they went for broke toward the end and just started killing off everyone in totally WTF ways.

    Alien films:

    1. Alien
    2. Alien 3
    3. Aliens
    4. Alien: Resurrection

But as with the Bond films, I genuinely do like all of them. Just you watch me defend Alien: Resurrection. I'll do it.

I don't get the dislike for this movie except that maybe everyone only saw the PG-13 version... the unrated cut is a lot of fun IMHO.
  • I enjoy AVP perfectly well as popcorn-munching entertainment (even in its PG-13 form). The cast really isn't up to much, but I like the concept of the predators storing the aliens for hunting purposes in a massive pyramid under the ice in Antarctica. You have to kind of forget the origins of either franchise and just go along with the idea of these two monsters beating on one another pro-wrestler-style along with some other checking-your-brain-at-the-door work, but once you do you can have a good amount of fun with the film. I particularly like the showdown between the lead predator and the queen at the end. I can definitely still throw this one on to enjoy every now and then when in the right mood; something I can't say at all about its follow-up.

Agreed; Requiem was low rent slasher porn by comparison.

For me these movies are a failed attempt at resurrecting two franchises while adding nothing at all.
And yes I have both in my collection being somewhat of a complimentist but I have watched these two only once while the other three movies have been seen quite often.
the AVP movies are allright I guess but do their franchise no favors at all IMHO.

A mixture of Predator and a xenomorph? Yes, because it looked suitably badass.
