I have a bunch of old home videos on DVD's that I wanted to digitize. I downloaded a free program called HandBrake that ripped the disc's contents to my hard drive. Its a piece of cake. Its the same principle for Blu-Rays but of course your computer needs a Blu-Ray compatible disc drive if you want to do this with Blu-Rays.
And as Ed83 mentioned, the files are VERY large. That's why I prefer owning digital copies through services like VUDU and Flixster where you stream your movies from the web like Netflix. Of course the downside with this is you need an internet connection to stream them so if your stranded in a Chilean mine with an iPad and a hankering for a Bond film, you're out of luck. With that said, these services do allow you to download your digital collection to your hard drive. So if you're going on long flight, you can download the movies ahead of time and watch them without an internet connection whenever you like.
AnyDvD HD for ripping to harddrive. TSMuxer for reauthoring (maybe stripping away foreign language and subs). Then TotalMediaTheatre 6 for playing the files from the harddrive. I have my 200+ Blu-Ray collection stored on 6TB.
When I use Makemkv I take the English audio tracks, and strip out the Spanish, French etc., like Zekidk said. Make sure you check the other English tracks if you want to have the ability to listen to the audio commentary.
After trying most of the video players out there, I have found that MPC-HC works the best for me. It is free, just google it. I get no stutters out of 1080p playback while I run games, tons of internet tabs, and other programs at the same time. It's very simple to use and has tons of options if you need to customize it to your liking.
As much as I'd HATE to give them (even) more money, if they ever updated the balance I would have to rebuy the handful of titles which got shortchanged.
By the way, if anyone who bought the 50th anniversary set would like to transfer them to jewel cases, I did a custom cover set featuring original poster art over at euphoricfx. Because of their rules I cant post them elsewhere (but if you run into trouble PM me and I'll see what I can do).
I use indeed jewel cases, so I might take a look at your covers, thanks!
Absolutely. From LTK onwards they vary from uninspiring to downright awful.
Nice covers though @JamesBond1988 (why is it so difficult for EON to get such simple things right?) although personally I think I would have gone for the main poster for FYEO and TLD and the teaser poster for DAD and all 3 Craig films.
Out of interest what do you have on the backs?
Amazing how many spoilers these old posters have :-)
Lots of action etc. While these days, that isn't as needed ?
Well I'll tell you what isnt needed these days - dismally uninspired piss poor photoshop efforts that comprise just of a publicity still of Bond and the title. If the bloke who designed the SP poster has billed EON for more than an hour then they should do him for fraud. And even being generous and giving him an hour I dont know what he was doing for the other 57 minutes.
:)) =)) Yeah, we could whip up some pretty sophisticated stuff in my Photoshop class pretty damn fast.
Well I dont think the term 'pretty sophisticated' could be applied in the case of the SP poster.
Thank You!!! I put a lot of effort into these covers, although I had to crop on some of them (most notably Diamonds Are Forever). TheWizardOfIce, to answer your question, I never done them yet, because of the hard work involved, including photoscanning the back cover for reference (which I'm unable to do due to the machine not working) as well as currently finding the correct font that was used on the back of Scream Factory's titles, which is extremely hard to locate at this point.
Now that's what I want Fox/Sony to do, to bring out all other 20 films on steelbooks. It's something I wouldn't be surprised to see happening in the near future.
