I think it is a ways off (I hope!) ... but I also think it may well be someone rather unknown at this time.
  • To me the list is a joke - it's the type of article that seems like an editor said "Hey, let's do an article on who can be the next James Bond!" and gave it to whoever had free time instead of the writer who could do the best job. I mean, some of the choices look like the writer just did a lazy google serch for "next James Bond" and scanned some articles without realizing they were from the end of Brosnan's tenure. It doesn't help that they mention MI5 instead of MI6 when discussing Clive Owen.

Having said that, and the fact that you never know who will suddenly break out in the next few years, there are a couple of choices on the list that may have genuine traction. Cavill seems most obvious and EON has been known to come back to actors they had wanted in the past (Dalton and Brosnan come to mind). If Bond 23 was a major failure at the box office (which seems unlikely) and the public seemed to reject Craig and the more serious Bond of late then I could see EON doing a hail Mary and offering the part to Jackman hoping for a return to the Brosnan era (he looks even better at this age than Brosnan did, IMHO).

I had thought that McGregor would be an interesting choice a few years back and he did seem somewhat interested in it. The years haven't really aged him so he could still do the part. As for everyone else on the list I just can't see it. I know some people would really like Fassbender or Hardy. I can understand why people want Fassbender - although he wouldn't be a choice for me I wouldn't be upset if he took the role. I just don't see Hardy as Bond though. Maybe it's the red, bee-stung lips or something about the eyes but I just don't see him as Bond. But then again Craig is my second-favourite Bond behind Connery and I know there are people who *still* are upset about his blond hair...

@thelordflasheart It would take quite a lot for EON to ditch Craig. As there are no clear candidates for Bond #7 as of now, it will be another long, tedious, exausting search that may well last 2 years. Gone are the days where the role was recast in one year, or a few months from Connery/Lazenby to Dalton/Brosnan. The Craig casting was the longest Bond search we've ever had, 18 months), and I believe it will continue that way in the future. And I also think that EON's optic is to keep the same actor as long as possible. They don't want another Lazenby scenario, because today a Lazenby 2.0 would take 3 years to make his outing and another 3 years to make a film after that with a new actor. So I think that EON has got it in the head that a tenure should last 4/5 films for a duration of 10 years... if nothing extraordinary happens. So all in all my point is it would take a strong, strong rejection, or a catastrophic box office failure for EON to recast. Even if the problem was big, but containable, EON would much rather just drop the current realistic trend and do a much more traditional film, a-la GE or TND, than recasting after only 6 years of Craig.

This is a funny list. Half of them are too old even if they started their tenure now:

    - Hugh Jackman: I would cringe, if I ever had to hear him say the line.
    - Clive Owen - the one with the best face for Bond - in stills - once he starts moving and opening his mouth, it gets beyond boring. Unfortunately...
    - Gerad Butler - Oh come on..
    - Colin Farell - too greasy then, too greasy now...
    - Ewan Mr.Gregor - if any of these LOOK bland, its him...he could be the best actor in the world and still won't fit the role for me
    - Colin Firth - good actor, but can anybody imagine him as a action hero, EVEN with cut down action scenes? It would be Moore (whom I like, but not for today) with better acting.

..ok - that's not exactly half but close. As for the rest...

    - Ryan Gosling - he might buff up as much as he wants - he is still a puppet to me
    - Robert Pattinson - would have to see him in 10 years...
    - Benedict C- don't know him - never heard the name...
    - Colin Salmon - same...
    - Idris Elba - IMO there are better suited black actors just by looks for the role, if you wanted a black Bond by any means...
    - Fassbender, Hardy, Cavill - possible

All in all, I doubt any of these will ever be Bond...

Fassbender and the first thirty mins of x-men just gave use connery's bond.
That's why I don't think he's right for the role. Everyone seems to have these expectations that he will be the next James Bond, but he has shown nowhere near the same level of enthusiasm for the role as fans have.
Nowhere near the same enthusiasm as the fans?? If he did, he would come off as desperate and according to your logic that would autmatically rule him out.
Fassbender has expressed interest but he's not going to go around lobbying for the role and nor should he. Right now EON probably have their eye on him but their main focus is on their star, Craig who is doing an awesome job.

Cavill should have been picked over Craig in the first place, buts what's done is done and Cavill had his chance. When Craig is done, I say go young. Age 28-32 with the proper look. So all these guys now seem too old for me. None of the above.

Cavill would've been 22 at the start of Casino Royale - a bit too young, for my taste. (Also the age where Dalton was first approached for OHMSS) And he's going to have plenty of chances later on, maybe even ten or twenty years. The fact that he choose Superman, however, lessen his chances greatly - similarly to how Jackman rejected the role in 2006: he was already too wrapped up with Wolverine.

My candidates are probably gonna be Aaron Johnson or Nicholas Hoult, and by the time I think Craig is ready to give up on the role (maybe after 2-3 more films), they would be the right age to continue the "young Bond" saga.

Aaron Johnson has a weird personal life... He is 21, married to a woman twice his age, and already has 2 kids. Not very suited for Bond.

The guys you mentioned would be in contention for the seventh Bond as long as Craig stayed in the role for another 10 years...I don't think Craig will be Bond for that long. (Although I think Hoult has the right look....Johnson really doesn't) Isn't it weird thinking that chap from 'Skins' could be the next Bond????? He's only a year or so older than me!!!!! A scary thought...

    Anyway...

I think when you re-cast Bond, you need an actor that is right around 30. Too old and you might not be able to hold on to him for long, too young and the films are going to turn into a different genre. I will agree and say Cavill was far too young for Casino Royale, but he will be the right age when Craig will likely depart from the role (2014 or 2016).
  • Maybe there are some younger unknown actors who would be perfect?

Remember that Barbara Broccoli will cast the next Bond and she chose Daniel Craig who had a radically different look from the familiar Bond image and was quite an obscure actor even though he had popped up in a few US movies. Babs may make another eccentric choice for Bond.

Babs is going to milk the Craig train so dry till he turns to dust. Honestly, it's pointless seriously looking at a 7th Bond because I reckon Craig will still be Bond at 50. At the press conference Babs was vehemently clear that Craig will do many more. He's 43 already and if they stick to the proposed every 2 years release of a Bond film, well, there you go.

    Bumpity Bump.

I just watched an interview with two main guys of Immortals, here:
    http://www.empireonline.com/interviews/interview.asp?IID=1392

Immortals stars Henry Cavill, who was one of the runner up Bonds before the Craig era. Cavill's co-star in Immortals is Luke Evans.

So.. how would you feel about Luke Evans as Bond for Bond 25 or 26(?)
He's young, talented, British, and isn't connected to any major roles like Fassbender or Cavill.

I think he even rather looks like he could be Craig's younger brother.

He came out of the closet a couple of years ago and then thanks to his publicist went back in again and now has a string of beards (pretend gfs).

Would this upset us if we had an actor who was gay playing Bond?

I don't have a problem with it. He's prob Bi anyways. Plus, Bonds going to go there eventually.

As per usual with these things, it's far too early to be thinking about at this time. DC was a surprise when he was announced.

Bond 7 needs to be someone we aren't yet familiar with. The list of 15 already feels old.
  • I don't know what it is, but I could never envisage McGregor as James Bond 007, sure it'd be fitting for his scottish roots, and to have a British Guy play the role but something just doesn't add up. Sure, he has done some fine work including Shallow Grave and the most strange Scots release Trainspotting, but as our favorite secret agent I just think we should look elsewhere

I was even thinking along the lines of former Soccer 'star' Vinny Jones, now an established or fairly recognized actor, he's the right build and height, although perhaps slightly past it in terms of age as any possible Bond candidate, although he'd certainly be the right continuation for Craig in terms of aggressiveness or vigor. And you know he'd jump at the chance to play Bond

Maybe It's been a long day

It would be useful if Daniel Craig gives notice and announces that the next film will definitely be his last (whenever that may be), giving EON time to start looking while Craig is still in the role.

To be fair though I'm sure EON are always looking.

Luke Evans does seem to fit the bill concearning the looks .Actually, I think Fleming would approve. And if he's gay, I don't see a problem there. He's playing a hetro. How many hetrosexual actors have played a homosexual?

He was fantastic in the Beebs' 'Luther', I could picture him as Bond.

I agree with everyone who says this discussion is moot at the minute as DC is perfect in the role and he's good for at least 2 more films. Personally I'd like Fassbender next up. Looked great in X-Men. Most of the others are laughable at best ie Worthington (cant accent and cant do accents), Clive Owen (too old but would have been good pre-DC), Hugh Jackman (Australian, yes I know GL was too!), Pattinson (just wrong on every level, mainly acting ability-wise PLUS his films suck! (lol)). Colin Firth, great actor but cant see him in an action role plus too old now obviously.
No black actor to play Bond thanks as much as I like Idris Elba. It would be just wrong and not what the character is.If so then call the character James Shaft or something. I,m sure this echoes what most other people think. It's not a race thing just an artistic thing!
Henry Cavill or Christian Bale would be good if they can commit to more franchises (although Bale is filming his last Batman film right now so should be available)
I also thing that Tom Hardy would be excellent and as physical as DC. Excellent actor. See what he's like in Dark Knight Rises next year and previously in Bronson, Inception and Layer Cake (wonder who else was in that!). Whatever happens casting wise after DC we DO NOT want some pretty-boy lump of wood cast on box office pull alone and preferably British. Dont want a a foreign actor for the part. Having said I realise we Brits are playing pretty much every superhero going these days ie Batman, Superman and Spiderman. Although RDJ did a great job as Sherlock Holmes (sorry, going slightly off topic there!)

They have to draw the line somewhere in terms of recreating characters. Its not racism, its just the way its supposed to be.

Hey great idea-- let's reboot Shaft with Jason Statham!

I think it's a given that a well known A list actor will not get the job. Why people bandy around such thoughts, fun as it is, I don't know. It'll be a fairly unknown chap, I think that's EoN's modus operandi.

I think only Fassbender, Cavill or Hardy would be decent candidates from that list, and I'm not convinced they'd all want to do it (Cavill would have, but he's Superman now).
Completely agree ! Though Michael Fassbender is the one oustanding choice out of the three man shortlist.

One other actor that should be considered: Eric Bana ?

Bana was born the same year as Craig, so is already out of the running.

he's a really talented actor, and i think flemming would prefer him being cast to some of the other choices (cough, stupid twilight actor robert patterson, cough)/

But maybe elbra and mcgregor are a little old now, but i don't like the sound of the other actors so i say cast an unknown.

IDEA: i know im gonna get murdered for this by some of you, but what about noel clarke??? he's a talented actor/director so im sure he could change his accent
