After the long wait, and not knowing if Bond would every be back, I was so excited when Bond finally returned, bigger, better & fresher than it had been for some time.
Outside Bond, probably Sin City-A Dame To Kill For. I was not disappointed, except for a moron in the back of the theatre talking nonsense throughout the film.
I eventually saw it on VHS about 8 months later. The rest is history. Probably one of my most watched films.
We had dial-up internet at the time, so you could only hear one second of it at time unless you waited, but I knew I'd love it when I heard the first opening guitar chord. It was like "Whoa, the theme is a rock song?"
I also remember all the controversy surrounding DC as Bond. Bond is blond, let's freak out!
Who could forget danielcraigisnotbond.com?
I was like sleepness-nights type of excited. That trailer really did it for me.
In terms of pics that I had high hopes for that actually delivered, I'd say LICENCE TO KILL. The novelization, which might be the worst one I've ever read, had initially dashed my high hopes, but the film itself was (x-ray polaroids and excessive vehicular moments aside) utterly thrilling, and the escape from the WAVEKREST was the only time I've actually felt Bond was in danger since the laser in GOLDFINGER.
Poorly produced and extremely cheap looking. A lot of the jokes weren't funny either
"Mr Bond, I'm having you in half an hour"
"splendid...your room or mine"
The sort of cringe-inducing joke only an ageing man could make. And to think this was the same bloke from Goldfinger.
Getting to see TLD/LTK in a big screen double bill, a few weeks back, got me pretty damn excited. I kept thinking 'is this happening'. Then the the lights went down, the MGM lion roared, and the classic Bond gunbarrel rolled across the screen. Yes, it WAS happening.
And did the first shot of Dalton turning his head on the big screen send shivers down your spine? (If you have one, of course.) It did that for me in 1987.
With both BTTF2 and BTTF3 how could my most watched and adored original film eventually* develop the storyline of characters I really love so I was absolutely pumped up for them when they released more than any other film. I watched BTTF3 in a treble bill premier release after sitting through 1 and 2 and loved every second.
*Seems the TBC at the end of the original was only ever a joke to suggest there would always be travelling forwards and backwards in time with Marty and the Doc not that there would ACTUALLY be a sequel
Had to be Empire Strikes back. It exceeded my wildest dreams.
Then:
Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Sweet.
Return Of The Jedi. It SO delivered.
Highlander 2. Effin' agony. :((
Back To The Future II. Awesome.
Back To the Future III. More awesome.
Terminator 2. Hasta la vista, baby. :)>-
Goldeneye. Ohhh yeah!
Tomorrow Never Dies. I was in OO7 Heaven.
Matrix: Revolutions. Alimentary, Dr. Leiter. [-(
Serenity. Tears of joy & sorrow.
SPECTRE. ...I'll let ya know...
a very, very nice list of A-class movies!!
Just realising that this thread means not only Bond movies so I add something to my former post's Licence To Kill as my most anticipated movie after the life-changing TLD.
Star Trek First Contact and Serenity!! a tie.
First Contact still is my favourite movie of all time, yes!
If I could only take 10 TV Shows with me on an island, Firefly would be one of them!
I was pumped with adrenaline hours before seeing it and afterwards I was walking on air for days!
I have to add Veronica Mars as well. I paid a 4 figure amount for the kickstarter campaign and when they sent me the Blu-ray I was in heaven. Getting a movie after all those time of one of the greatest TV Shows ever...a dream come true.
I know your pain, i was incredibly let down as well.
I love TLD, but I have never understood the near-universal praise for the Dalton intro. For a 1987 film, shooting a sequence entirely outdoors in daylight but then doing your lead's intro in a very obvious studio closeup is a glaringly annoying move, and should seriously distract your audience.
Even though we had high hopes for Dalton after enduring the Moore era, my then-girlfriend and I were actually pretty worried about how the film would go from the PTS, and I don't think it was till his "NO WAY!" about going back for the cello that I really got that this was going to work, and work on Dalton's terms.
Jurassic Park - I could not wait to see this movie when i was little.. i would say that it was probably the "Jaws" of our generation - it was the THE must see event, and i remember just boiling over with excitement to see it..... then i convinced my parents to take me back 2 more times to see it lol.
The Lost World - I still remember the Super Bowl trailer on TV for this.. I couldn't wait.
Batman And Robin - at the time (being a young kid) i really loved Batman Forever, so when this was coming out, I got excited............... then i saw it.
The World Is Not Enough - even though TND had been my first Bond movie in theaters, TWINE was coming out in the middle of when i was first discovering the world of Bond (by going back and watching all the old films).. so this was at the height of my discovery craze, so i was amped to this..
The Phantom Menace - though i wasn't nearly as excited about it when it ended lol.
Revenge Of The Sith - i actually went to the midnight release of this one when it came out - so i got to be present around all the people who dress up in costumes lol. It was fun.. Out the prequel trilogy, this is the one i like the most - still not perfect by any stretch, but i really like it.
Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull - big time Indiana Jones fan, but i never got to see one in the theater - so when this was announced, i was freaking out (as most of us were).. the finished product was a bit underwhelming, but not nearly as "terrible" as people's knee jerk reactions about it were... i still enjoy it despite it's numerous flaws.
The Avengers - after all the build up, I was pumped... and I wasn't let down - great action / comic spectacle.
Furious 7 - being a big Fast and Furious fan, I was anticipating the new film, but once Walker died, it became THE film I had to see.... and honestly, when walking out, i felt like "meh".. i didn't hate it, and i really am amazed they managed to pull off what they did without Paul being there to finish the film (especially knowing they had to rewrites aspects of the script to fit his absence - which made the story feel like it was rushed and disjointed - but it really wasn't - if that makes sense).. the action i just felt was getting way too out of hand and unbelievable... i hope #8 scales things back a bit..
currently excited for...
Back To The Future I, II, III - yes, on October 21st, 2015 the entire trilogy will be rereleased in select cinemas across the country... i cannot wait.. i went and saw Ghostbusters when it was rereleased last year, and i missed out on Jaws this summer - i will NOT miss Back To The Future lol.
Spectre - because, duh! - lol
The Force Awakens - i wish i didn't have to wait until Christmas to see this thing :(
Superman v Batman - the epic clash of comic titans, now finally on film after years and years and years
I never thought it looked that obvious it was in a studio. There are a couple of blatant back projection shots when Dalton is on the jeep but otherwise I think the PTS is well done.
Next would probably be TND. While I looked forward to seeing GE, I guess there was a fair bit of trepidation as to whether Bond would still 'work'. I was fairly happy with the choice of Brosnan at the time and thought he did pretty well (apart from the hair and running lol) so was pretty pumped to see what they could do next, particularly with a bigger budget to play with.
As for non-Bond films, the ones I particularly remember looking forward to seeing as a kid were the 1976 remake of King Kong (massive fan of the original and similar Harryhausen-type creature features) and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, which I'd read countless UFO-related articles in the run up to its release.
Later, Pulp Fiction was a movie I couldn't wait to see and would rate the opening night viewing experiences with a packed, enthralled audience as one of my cinematic highlights. I also remember literally running to a cinema with a mate after finishing work on a Friday to get there in time to see Gladiator lol.
More recently, I'd say The Avengers, if just to please the Silver Age Marvel loving kid inside me. The last movie I remember being really excited to go and see was Prometheus but the less said about that the better I think!
