Brosnan. Can someone tell me if he was fired outright ? Or booter for asking for too much $$$ ?

I thought it was fact Brosnan asked for too much money and they decided to go into another direction and Craig was cheap, compared to Brosnan so they took it the deal. I haven't found much about it online.

Pierce Brosnan on Being Booted from Bond

PS: I think Ewan McGregor would have an interesting Bond.

    Brosnan left in early 2003, declaring he 'went out on a high'. EON started the whole 'reboot, young actor, more serious, darker' direction. Then Brosnan started negociating with EON again in mid 2004. But his high salary demand and the fact that EON were already in the optic of a younger Bond, Brosnan's offer was refused.

    He wasn't fired as he wasn't under contract since DAD, but his 2004 re-negociation/offer was refused, as he no longer fitted the part.

    Yes, his contract was for 3 films (GE, TND, TWINE) with option for a 4th (DAD). He never signed a new contract for a 5th film (Bond 21).

    If EON keep Craig on for more, I hope his contract is sorted before Bond 24 comes out. That would really show how serious they are about him. I don't think anyone wants another "will he, won't he do another" again. It shouldn't have happened to begin with but that's another story.

    Yes, the whole Brosnan fiasco was terrible, both for EON and the fans. I also hope that EON will find a replacement for Craig quickly once he quits after Bond 24 or Bond 25... I don't want another long, exhausting search for a new Bond.

    Yes, personally waiting for Casino Royale seemed like forever... And I don't even think it was nearly as long of await for the Dalton - Brosnan transition. Just think of how fast the Moore movies went into production, one after another, almost every year. And I loved the fact you could tell what the next Bond movie was going to be by watching the end of the credits. Bring it back please!

    Connery -> Lazenby : 1 year
    Lazenby -> Connery : 1 year
    Connery -> Moore : 1 year
    Moore -> Dalton ; 1 year
    Dalton -> Brosnan : 1 month (Dalton was the official Bond until he resigned in april 1994, and Brosnan signed in may 1994)
    Brosnan -> Craig : 2.5 years.

    So yes the Bond search for Casino Royale was by far the longest we got between the resignation of the preceeding Bond and the announcement of the new Bond.

    I so miss that announcing the next movie at the end of the credits. Since they ran out of fleming titles they would pull a mind fart and just say "James Bond will Return" because they have no ready title. I used to wait in anticipation watching the end credits just to see what the title of the next movie would be.

    Imagine if you sat there through the whole credits just to see the words 'JAMES BOND WILL RETURN IN RISICO/THR/TPOAL'. That would be surreal.

    The departure of Dalts generated practically no media interest as I recall, though - mind you, that was back in the era of non-24-hour obsessive news. So, the handover between Timbo and The Brozzer felt far longer, not least because we had to wait six years of course after LTK for GE - a period too when Bond's popularity and, dare I say it, relevance with the public seemed to nosedive.

    Say what you like about Brosnan's era, but it - and GE in particular - reinvigorated the Bond film brand perhaps more than anything before or since...

    Yes St_George, Dalton didn't resign until april 1994, and Brosnan signed in may 1994, so in reality it is the shortest Bond search in the franchise. It's just that Dalton kept waiting for a hypothetical Bond 17... so basicly once Dalton left the obvious new Bond was Brozzer, so things went quickly.

    Hmmm Interesting. Its probably also due to the fact they wanted to do CR and PB was to old.

    @DaltonCraig007 good point, but for the masses, people had no clue. Bond was out of sight, outta mind. And that was bad news bears for Bond fans. (that didn't know those details)
  • After GE, Brosnan brought out a whole new crowd to see Bond. Those of us that didn't want gadgets and action film stayed home though.

    CR was something they wanted to do since '62 - but could never secure the rights ..

    Cubby wanted to reboot with Dalton in the 80s, using CR - but again, they couldn't get the rights.. so they opted to keep it business as usual..

    They finally got the rights to CR in 2002 - so they had their chance to reboot, but Brosnan was still hanging around - and had he stuck around, no doubt they would've done a 5th film with him - but we walked away on his own admist rumors of him getting axed for his age... EON wasted no time and began work on CR...

    Thats when Brosnan's public whining started

    I lost a lot of respect for Brozzers during that point of time.

    @haserot I did not know about the GE & CR rights issues, thanks!

    I believe Pierce Brosnan had an interview around 6 months ago, reported on IMDB, about post James Bond and he commented that he wanted to do 1 more Bond production and then bow out.

    I also heard he wanted a reported 15 million pounds to play Bond once more.

    To tell you the truth, I would not have paid him £ 15 to play Bond based on the TND, TWINE and especially DAD productions.

    Thankfully the producers dispensed of his services and brought Bond up to the standard set by the Jason Bourne series with Casino Royale and an highly impressive performance from Daniel Craig.

    No more Bourne ref please...yes JB needed a bit of spruce after DAD - like decent scripts, but to chuck all that heritage out for a Bab's eye candy made no sense. If you wanted to do a reboot do it properly and have a young Bond. HC would have been right for the newbe Bond not like an old codger like DC.

    I was under the impression that a reboot was Wilson's idea, and Cubby didn't care for it.

    Not at all...

    in the documentary on Casino Royale, they explained how originally, they wanted to start at the very beginning with Sean, and have the first film CR - but couldn't....... Cubby was bent on wanting to do CR - but he knew the only way to really do it, and do it with justice, was to have Bond at the beginning of his 007 career - as it's the story that sets up him as a character, but also a great deal of personality, and relationship problems..... when Rog was ready to bow out, and Dalts was waiting in the wings, Cubby thought it the perfect time to do CR, to go back to the beginning with a fresh "new" Bond .... But Cubby couldn't get the rights, so he opted to just forge ahead and keep going..

    Michael and Barbara pretty much fulfilled a wish that their father had had since the 80s.

    an old coger??? :-)) ... i would hardly call 37 an old coger.... personally, i didn't want my Bond to look like he was just out of high school....

    and chuck out what??.... have you been reading anything in the previous posts sir??.... BROSNAN WALKED...... EON then made the decision that the time was right to reboot - and it wasn't until well into their hunt for a new Bond that Brosnan wanted back in - the script to CR was well on it's way to being finished at this point... so scrap all that so we could get another DAD, or possibly worse?... because you know they would've shelved CR, and began work on a completely different script - one that would probably be rushed, and more ham fisted than DAD......

    they didn't axe Brosnan b/c Babs got a little moist for Craig... what financial sense does that make fire Brosnan? he had great Box Office numbers..... he fulfilled his contract, he walked, they rebooted, he wanted back, it was too late, they said no - he threw a euro-tantrum over it... sorry, dems the breaks.

    I always thought the reason he wasnt used was because CR became available. The story of Bond learning the ropes and Brosnan was, dare I say it, too old. Not just Babs and Mickey thought this but Martin Campbell as well.

    He didnt walk. He was given the pink slip. Babs told him by telephone.

    A bit of both, I'm afraid. Brosnan walked after DAD, so EON started working on the young Bond, reboot and CR. A while later Brosnan wanted back in, but he didn't fit the role anymore. So his demands/offer were refused.

  • in the reboot scenario, Bond is supposed to be a novice, not yet a 00. He's also an ex SAS bod, and 'm sure those guys are pretty clued up. So to see DC's character has a green-horn at his age is a bit beyond crap.

    But if you put HC in there, it sort of makes logical sense.

    In terms of Brosnan, the first thirty mins of DAD were awesome - I sat watching thinking this is how it should be for PB and then Jinx and poor CGI turned up yuk.

    Although DAD and PB gave us the best Bond line for at least 20 years.

    Did he walk after DAD? I have seen anything to do with this? And yes, in the meantime, they got the rights to CR (thank god) and he didnt fit the bill anymore.

    I also think he priced himself out the role. 20 million dollars a film is a heck of a chunk of the budget.

    He walked in early 2003, after saying 'We went out on a high'. It wasn't until Early-mid 2004 that Brosnan tried to negociate with EON to star in Bond 21.

    And Brosnan got 17 million dollars for DAD, so his raise for a 5th film would have been the smallest in his tenure.

    Must admit I recall nothing of Brosnan walking. I always thought he wanted to carry on for a fifth after DAD. I have only seen interviews where he says that negotiations were on for number 5 and then Eon went quiet on him. These events of 2003 are new to me.

    I don't know NicNac I strongly remember having seen interviews of Brosnan in early 2003, about february or march, that Brosnan said he went out on a high (DAD) and he was walking out... It wasn't until 2004 that Brosnan started negociating with EON again for Bond 21.

    The only thing I heard about him then was that he hadn't heard anything about Bond 21. I thought he was all up for Bond 21. Then they told him they wern't using him for the next one over the phone.

    Would you mind providing evidence that the guy quit and came back? I dont recall it....

    Hmmm this article points out that Brosnan said that quote in July 2004...

    I would have sworn he said it in early 2003...
