I have a distinct feeling, that the audience ratings for this film will be growing, once 'normal' cinema audiences, and not 'negative IMDB movie nerds', start rating the film as of next week.
But I do think that especially among the critics and the few over-critical movie nerds, "SPECTRE" can't do much good because of the slightly negative narrative that has been attached to this film...ever since the 'dark force' of the SonyLeaks loomed over this production.
Be very happy with Spectre. :)
Personally, I'd give it a solid 7.5/10 upon initial viewing in London. I'll have to wait for it to be released on Germany to watch it again, though.
I don't care anymore :-). If "Spy" and "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" get 93% at RT, "Skyfall" is not even able to hit 9% on RT, and "SPECTRE" 'only' gets 79% on RT, then this is mostly because of expectations and anticipations...combined with some build-in negativity surrounding the SonyLeaks/'Craig-slashes-his-wrists' remarks.
Most reviewers find it difficult to place "SPECTRE" within a context of 24 (26) Bond films. They were used to the grittynessa and emotion-heavy, arty espionage drama from his previous 3 outings. Obviously you get criticism if this 4th outing is a more welcome return to 'Bond formula'.....just like "Casino Royale" was a welcome goodbye to 'Bond formula'.
It is how it is. Like Bond's past haunts him in these four films, the entire history of the franchise will always haunt every new film. It's especially a build-in disadvantage when reviews start coming in. "Fast & Furious", "The Dark Knight", "Mission: Impossible" and "Jason Bourne" don't have that disadvantage, because these franchises are young.
There's only a context/reference point of a few films or one decade for these young Bond-inspired action-/spy-franchises. Godfather Bond is 53 years old and has got 24 (26) films under his belt.
With respect, it could also be that this is mark they think it deserves . What evidence do we have that the reasons you state are the causes of the 79%?
I don't. And you could be right too. But my feeling says that the more 'typical Bond formula' isn't liked anymore since "CR", "QOS" and "SF" came along.
concerning the film is it the director, actor/actresses, plot etc?
This is a strange case when I don't think RT and critics are going to 've an accurate judge if the film.
Critics are paid to criticize and would be amiss if didn't point out faults.
The audience sample on RT or any website is not scientific.. not a random sample but only those whom chose to respond.
I'm going to judge and worry about how I will enjoy SP.
Again traditional fans seem to really enjoy the film faults and all.
I left the theater disappointed when I saw SF btw. Since then though it's one if my favorites. Just didn't feel like Bond belonged to me any more when I first saw SF.
IMDB early on has a huge twist towards 10/10. Right know, one can see that the curve bell is around 7/8, with an anomaly in 10. I think that on the contrary, all the ratings go down for blockbusters on IMDB over time (and go up for sleeper hits, and these one are far less numerous)
Wow, you can judge other people's opinion without having watched the movie yourself ? :)
That's good news. So we seem to be having some variety in the DC era then, because so far all of his releases have been quite different....
Additionally, if this is really DC's last, then he had to have one of the more traditional trope/humour laden films under his belt, for his legacy and own sense of satisfaction, as well as ours.

This guy gave 4 stars to "Furious 7", 5 stars to "Jurassic World", 4 1/2 stars to "Avengers: Age Of Ultron"....and then there was his disappointment in "SPECTRE"...barely 3 stars :-). These kind of ratings stink IMO.

She can get back in her box.
I hear that remark a lot. Well woman, 24 Bond films? 53 years old? WTF do you expect. Terrence Mallick's "The Tree Of Life" with a car chase starting in the age of the dinosaurs and ending when the Sun goes Supernova? And on top of that a "Cloud Atlas" generation observation? Dear woman? Bye.

She can get in her coffin...
I was checking her ratings on RottenTomatoes, and obviously she's one hell of a depressed woman. My God, if you also rate "The Wolf Of Wallstreet", "The Imitation Game", "Gone Girl", "Mr Holmes", "Drag Me To Hell", "Wild" and "Birdman" as "ROTTEN", then you have some mental issues to deal with...with a good shrink.
She's a dick. Probably the type that thinks Bond should be anything but a white, heterosexual man.
She's actually quite an outspoken feminist :-P. It explains a lot:

What a surprise.
3.75 stars / out of 5.00 stars (0036 votes): "SPECTRE"
And the previous 7 Bond films:
3.66 stars / out of 5.00 stars (4382 votes): "CASINO ROYALE"
3.59 stars / out of 5.00 stars (3360 votes): "SKYFALL"
3.44 stars / out of 5.00 stars (2175 votes): "GOLDENEYE"
3.06 stars / out of 5.00 stars (1743 votes): "TOMORROW NEVER DIES"
3.04 stars / out of 5.00 stars (1785 votes): "THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH"
3.01 stars / out of 5.00 stars (3066 votes): "QUANTUM OF SOLACE"
2.89 stars / out of 5.00 stars (2436 votes): "DIE ANOTHER DAY"
Yup, true. I also think that in general some negativity surrounded this production. Just read some of the topics on IMDB. It really makes you....eh...depressed really. Such a load of nonsense...and especially hatred towards the Bond franchise.
SonyLeaks are being mentioned heavily in these topics. They're asking for Craig's head (chopped off from his body). I think.....this rating doesn't really reflect how good/bad the film actually is.
Moreover: "Spy" 93% at RT? "Rogue Nation" at 93%? From these spy movies we blatantly 'accept' 'Bond formula'?
Jurassic world 70%, Age of Ultron 74%, Furious 7 81%
The common theme I'm seeing in the negative reviews is that it doesn't have the same impact as Skyfall. Well that IMHO is a ridiculous criticism; making Skyfall 2 would have been creatively disastrous and a foolish attempt to get lightning to strike twice. How do you top the "emotional stakes" (to quote a critic) of killing a beloved major character who'd been in 7 films? I think some people wanted to see M's corpse resurrected and then killed again. :))
Agreed ...I enjoyed the one SF ...that's enough.
Still, I prefer developed characters, strong story structure, creativity, great sound effects, rousing score, etc.
We need to keep the bar high...
