If actually a re-make would be made at one point I'd like to see a re-imagination of The Man With The Golden Gun, that could be quite exciting.

What about remaking the novels to the letter of Flemings writing in a TV drama format? Imagine seeing Moonraker done the way Fleming wrote it, as a 50's period piece/drama/action adventure show. Each book could become a seasons worth of episodes and it would allow for more nuanced portrayals of the stories.

That's my preferred option, and it would work especially well with the books that received unfaithful adaptations, such as LALD, MR, DAF, AVTAK, YOLT, and TMWTGG. But if we had to choose feature film remakes, most of the previously mentioned titles would also be good choices, since the original films neglected a good deal of their sources. A more faithful remake of LALD would be especially interesting--smuggled pirate treasure is a neat plot and the blood-and-shark filled climax would be memorable.

This could be a disaster of a shitstorm of an idea - infact, "Shitstorm" is not a bad title - but what about a pastiche of a Fleming novel on film, using the best unused bits including the truly macabre backstory of Grant in FRWL (moonlight kills for reward in Soviet asylum), featuring May serving him eggs and coffee in his Chelsea apartment and see if they can make a one-off Ian Fleming's James Bond movie. Perhaps a better title would be "Sex, Sadism and Snobbery". Just a one-off with a famous actor in the Bond role pre-announced for that film only. What do you think? Be gentle.

Using digital technology, they could always "remake" OHMSS by having another actor perform Lazenby's role. Everything else - including the soundtrack obviously - would be untouched. Many people say that the film is great bar Lazenby's performance and so that would be one way to do a limited remake. Personally, I think Lazenby is fine and he is part of the appeal of the movie, but for those who disagree, its an interesting idea.

    Man with golden gun
It will keep more to the book but move from Jamaica to Far East story would be KGB deciding to
take control of Far East drug trade so it can use the profits for its own use
    Moonraker
The gondola/hovercraft would not be able to use side streets of of St marks sq because they are
small narrow streets so i would have more speed boat chase down the grand canal side and canal network .
And change ms goodhead name and she would be one off felix agents .
    Spy who loved me
The major be part off the iron hammer section which are KGB counterparts to the 00 section

Lots of great ideas in this thread!
I have always felt the filmmaker missed a "golden" opportunity in TMWTGG: Bond, upon learning that he is a target of Scaramaga, should have gone into his office and dug out the gold-plated Colt 45 revolver he took off Goldfinger.
"I, too, have a golden gun!"

    View to a kill
The race course scene kept the same but the change Patrick macnee would be S a John steed in-joke
that would be his only scene in the film
Bond meets a French secret service agent who has been investigating zorin
and the chase down Paris river in the lotus will gets damaged
At the Paris station bond gets his toys from Q and gets his legend and the rolls Royce
    For your eyes only
Columbo and kristatos should be the sons who took over there family business
columbo took over his father smuggling business but he only smuggles cigs , nuts , gold and silver , money .
Kristatos took over his father business and smuggles arms , drugs also being a KGB agent
There fathers fought in WW2 and then civil war together but kristatos father had worked for Germans and then become KGB agent after the war
So bond in a way gets caught up in a blood feud
    More use lotus GTI
Instead of using tanner bond gets his mission orders from 0 the 00 section chief
    No moneypenny
    Moonraker
Drax is arms dealer because he is arms dealer in book he designs and builds missiles and rockets systems for the armed forces so think drax as baddie tony stark
Sir Freddie gray should be civil servant and be M direct boss or have sir Freddie as O the 00 section head

What do you a think a modern remake of Goldfinger would be like?

I think they tried that, and we got A View To A Kill.

    ;)

As much as I enjoy Goldfinger, it's a sixties Bond film. I don't think audiences today would be thrilled by an updated version of it. If it's anything like the fans who disliked TFA because it was a similar to Star Wars, then I can't see Bond fans or anyone for that matter liking a remake of Goldfinger.
I don't like remakes, why can't writers come up with something original?
It really isn't that hard. Just use some imagination and thought. Remakes are a lazy option.

Good post. Several of the Bond films appear to be unofficial remakes of earlier films. Of course, YOLT/TSWLM/MR, but also GF/AVTAK and FRWL/TLD.

I think there is a sort of catch-22 with remakes. Ideally you'd remake a bad film or a film that had potential but missed the spot somehow. Thing is, those films didn't and still don't attract much attention. It doesn't matter if your remake is good, no one will care for it because no one cared for the original.

So you remake a good film, except there is already no point, since the film was good in the first place and there is no reason to remake it and you furthermore run the risk of ruining it. People will see it, but chances are people will see it as second to the original.

    It is a lose-lose situation.

Hence my rather negative view on remakes. They really should only remake black-and-white films, films that are so old it lessens the ability for people today to enjoy them. And only then if the remake is creative and brings new concepts to the film whilst retaining the original's key ideas and trademarks.

I would never remake any Bond film, the series has endured because it evolves. Good or bad Bond has to look forward not retred.

Alright. Never thought I'd say this but as it's an alternative to my "What If" scenarios, I'd remake Tomorrow Never Dies under its original title Tomorrow Never Lies, using the very same script (with little updated assets and elements put into it) as the first draft written by Feirstein.

TND and TWINE can definitely be remade to be better. DAD needs a lot of fixing - probably moreso than any other remade film except perhaps MR.

Goldfinger is unquestionably not capable of being remade, at least not for now. It's still remembered as a great and inevitably, nostalgia will get the better of critics and the general population alike, and the remake will be branded as a failure or a poorer carbon copy. We'll have to wait until the people who saw GF (and really, any of the Connery movies) in the cinemas have passed away, maybe 30 or so more years, before GF can really be made without a backlash of some sort. That's not mentioning that GF is definitively a 60's movie - modernising it will be challenge.

Don't get me wrong, I love TND the way it is, but I can't get over the first draft that I've read which is absolutely fascinating to begin with.
  • The World Is Not Enough already has been remade, twice in the same year in fact: first as The Dark Knight Rises, then as Skyfall. ;)

The first draft of TND had some good ideas (climbing the icefall during the PTS, fighting in a medieval weapon museum in Venice), but there were a lot of wobbly things too, like wasn't the Bond girl a rebellious niece of Elliot Harmsway or something? Also Jack Wade played a bigger role (not a great idea) and the climax was nowhere near as entertaining as the stealth ship finale. All things considered, I think we got the better draft onscreen.

But I wouldn't be against a version with '97 Monica Bellucci as Paris. ;)
  • One could argue that the series has been unofficially remaking itself repeatedly.

SP is a remake of YOLT.
SF is a remake of TWINE.
QOS is a remake of LTK.
AVTAK is a remake of GF.
MR is a remake of TSWLM.

    And:

TND recycled from TSWLM, TSWLM recycled from YOLT, YOLT recycled from DN.
Every film after GF recycles from GF.

I'm not saying all these are true but these are all the arguments one could possibly make.

I certainly am not against Wade playing a bigger role, and the fact that Bond has a place to put on his white tuxedo at a casino reserved for the golf members in Hong Kong. The way he subdued the bodyguard of that very Bond Girl you mentioned (can't remember her name at the moment) was recycled for that tough-talk bald guard from The World Is Not Enough who thinks Bond has trouble hearing him (Lol!). The Venice segment was a lot better than its Hamburg replacement. But, the lack of Kauffman in the death of Paris Harmsway scene isn't good enough, so I'd put Dr. Kauffman back where he belongs.

You know? The way Elliot's lines were written, I didn't imagine Jonathan Pryce in the role, but Anthony Hopkins instead, who was rumoured to have been offered the role for Elliot Harmsway/Carver. Teri Hatcher was miscast, and the role should've been filled with the beautiful Monica Bellucci (but at least we've got her as being part of the franchise!).

However, I will have to agree that the climax was lackluster and dumbed down. I very much prefer the Stealth Boat finale.

Yeah, well it says that in the booklet that came with my Special Edition DVD anyway. And of course it had Quarrel Jr.

It would be a nice idea to adapt the last act of TSWLM novel as a PTS to introduce the next Bond actor?

I'd remake Diamonds Are Forever. More action, less Guy Hamilton, less 70s, less camp, truthful to the novel to an extent, a little bit of sci-fi elements dragged from the movie, a little, and set in the 1960s.

I wouldn't remake any single bond film. What I would do though is re edit all the John Glen movies of the 80s and take out the stupid humour which undermined some potentially great films. This list is not definitive but here's few to edit out for starters; no beach boy music in AVTAK pre credit, no Tarzan leap, no 'fill her up please' or tiger 'sit!' in Octopussy, no Margaret Thatcher in FYEO, no 'lets go fishing Felix!' at the end of Licence to Kill when his wife's just been killed and he's still on drips in hospital and definitely no 'I'll buy you a delicatessent in stainless steel in FYEO'! John Glenn's films would have been so much better if they had stuck to their guns to make FRWL type adventures and not copped out to keep a family audience amused. Worst decade ever of the series because the films were so uneven. Pity because action scenes were some of the very best of the series! As I say great films trapped in a Disney package.

I would rather seeing remakes than see edited versions of previous films. All Bond films are a product of their era, and I would never want to see their legacy deminished by having stuff edited/altered with 2016 technology. Remakes are lesser evil because the old films would still exist in their current form. With edits, the films would lose the 'feel' of the 1960s, 1970s, etc.

But bottom line - no remakes, no edits of past films.

Having watched YOLT again last evening, it is time to start remaking s
Great question! I believe I have mentioned elsewhere that my pet peeve is the way the filmmakers fumbled Fleming's "Blofeld Trilogy." I hope that "SPECTRE" is the beginning of a three-part cycle that will rectify this situation.

THEREFORE: the next film, Bond 25, simply MUST be a remake of "On His Majesty's Secret Service."

(Yes, "HIS" Majesty. Elizabeth--God save her--cannot realistically live forever, and her successors for three generations are all male. Anything referencing HER majesty, for QUEEN and Country, etc, will immediately upon her death become a relic of a bygone age.)

In Bond 26, 007 avenges Tracy and slays "Dr. Shatterhand" in the Garden of Death, possibly perishing himself in the process. (Reboots ensue.)

I found this gem on comments page 100. I'd be interested to know how the author feels about SPECTRE and NTTD. Funny how OHMSS music figured into NTTD.

I am ready to see some faithful adaptations of MR and YOLT. Fine, change the titles. Call them DRAX and SHATTERHAND.

I don't liked remakes, I have seen so many remakes before, the remakes of the past movies and they're not good compared to the original, in fact some were a lot more worse and put a stain on the story.

Dune might be successful in remaking, because the original one got the story wrong.

But those others that got it right, they made the remakes looked worse.

That's the thing with the Bond films (particularly the Connery/Lazenby/60's Era), I'm fine with doing faithful adaptations of those films that strayed away from the source materials like DAF, LALD, TMWTGG, MR or even TSWLM, but the others? I don't quite see the point.

Maybe Die Another Day, remake it, make the story more polished, instead of the CGI galores that we've got in 2002, make it modernized and proper, different title of course.

Focus the story on what happened to Bond in the PTS, him being tortured, centered around a North Korea cold war, and grounded (NO DNA REPLACEMENT ANGLE! REMOVE THAT ENTIRELY!), If the villain is North Korean, stay and keep him that way!

They could still have Gustav Graves, but as a separate character, make him a puppet of Colonel Moon (a businessman who's having some negotiations with Colonel Moon regarding the smuggling of diamonds and sports cars), a second villain, think of it like Georgi Koskov and Brad Whittaker, but a more developed character with understandable intentions.

Replace the dialogues, have Jinx be like Camille Montes in that she's really tough, not flashy or showy, with witty dialogues that could counterpart Bond's.

I'm definitely for a Die Another Day remake, especially that the issue about North Korea is getting louder again.
