YOLT - mainly due to the use of the Ken Adam set with ninjas lowering themselves down on ropes. Epic!

Oh goodness! #-O How could I forget OHMSS!! Easily my favorite finale: the Lazenby machine gun slide, the Draco helicopter assault, Tracy skewering that guy on the spike sculpture (you knew that prop was going to be used for something deadly later on!), the Bob-sled chase with Bond and Blofeld! It nearly brings tears to my eyes it's so good.

OHMSS is tops. High octave action.
AVTAK This film gets a lot of hate but that climax on the Golden Gate Bridge was great. You can actually say Moore went out with style. (can't say the same for Connery and Brosnan--but this is for another thread)

  • I show genuine concern for anyone who seriously enjoyed or took some fulfilment from the last quarter of A View To A Kill, no disrespect but it's without question an embarrassment to both Moore and the series, next time you get a chance watch it again and take note, 57 year old Moore (well not him obviously), sailing over SF Bay and all that aerial nonsense, then Blair Witch Type camera shakings as Moore and Roberts battle it out with an embarrassed looking Walken on the Bridge ending, all said it's more cringeworthy than anything else, poor way for Roger to depart after 12 years, they really should of considered a more appropriate ending

So Roger was stretching it at age 57 and lets face it. We have to suspend belief when watching any movie/TV series. I would watch this scene before I ever watch the climax of DAF or that windsurfing scene from DAD--now that's cringeworthy. !! :))

    1. GoldenEye- non-stop thrills! The whole base is going up in flames, while Bond and Trevelyan have a personal score to settle. And on a comedy note, Boris can't work the satellite!

    2. A View to a Kill- Main Strike is about to be completed, and Bond receives unusual assistance from May Day, who sacrifices herself to save San Francisco. Still one of my favorite scenes in the series. Then of course, Stacey is captured and it's up to Bond to prevent Zorin from escaping with his lady!

    3. The Spy Who Loved Me- Bond and the prisoners escape, retake control of the Liparus, and program the missiles to strike their own submarines. EPIC! The, like #2, the villain captures Bond's lady, and he's got limited time before the US Navy destroys Atlantis!

    4. Tomorrow Never Dies- Carver's missile is counting down, and the British Navy is tearing the stealth boat apart! Can Bond and Wai Lin overcome Carver's forces and stop the missile? Tune in tomorrow at the same Bond time, same Bond channel!

    5. Octopussy- Clown-suited 007 must prevent Orlov's bomb from destroying the US airbase and Octopussy's circus with it! And then, once again like #2 and #3, the lady gets captured by the villain, and Bond must rescue her from immenant danger, on the wing of a plane!!

Thunderball, YOLT, OHMSS, TSWLM. I'm a sucker for giant battles, what I can I say? I also do quite like TMWTGG's finale as well.

Me too! I love the big Bond finales, they are much more enjoyable than the low-key ones.

    1. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    2. Casino Royale
    3. The Spy Who Loved Me
    4. GoldenEye
    5. Licence to Kill

Special Mention: From Russia With Love

Interestingly enough, those are my top Bond movies too, in that order.

It's funny, but the endings are often the least memorable bits of the films. As others have often noted, the films do often flag towards the finale. I think there is a difference between the action finale in the villain's lair and the sign-off where Bond sails off with the girl.

    Great action finales:

    GF at Fort Knox
    YOLT in the volcano
TSWLM in the tanker and then Stromberg's underwater base
OCTO - brilliantly tense final scene in the circus tent

Since then, I wouldn't single out a single finale.

With regards to the final scene/sign-off, FRWL is nice, with Bond frittering away the film tape from the back of a gondola. I think in general Rog had the best endings and most amusing lines. 'Keeping the British end up', although massively cheesy, cannot fail to make me laugh. Can barely remember any of the others.

    YOLT.
    FRWL.
QoS. Hey, its artsy fartsy and has splosions. And I love it when something explodes and Bond slides about with Greene. Just good fun.

The Big Rig stuff at the end of LTK is a tour de force! It seems genuinely dangerous (as where they were filming was an accident hotspot) and it's thrilling to see Bond be such a bad ass. He's literally a one man army (okay, there was a girl in the plane, too). It's also really personal, it feels much like Bond's final battle with Blofeld at the end of the YOLT novel.

The assault at the end of OHMSS is also barnstorming - it has the excitement of the volcano base assault from YOLT but none of the silliness.

That said, silliness doesn't stop the ninja assault in YOLT from being one of my fave finales. Nothing since has topped the scope of it, and I doubt anything ever will. CGI has come in leaps and bounds but it will never capture the thrill of seeing 20 guys descend such a distance all at once.

The battle inside the supertanker towards the end of TSWLM is obviously an attempt to copy the sequence in YOLT but I think it mostly succeeds. I especially like the change of pace when Bond is hanging off the bomb; it's very tense! While there is still a lot of film to go after this sequence, everything that follows in Atlantis is pretty much filler.

I know I may be dragged over hot coals for this, but I also quite like the ending of DAD. The setting feels genuinely dangerous, with the plane's walls and windows falling apart, and I like the two fights running concurrently. Yes, Gustav Graves is dressed like Robocop and I know Jinx is an acquired taste, but I like their sword fight (it helps that Rosamund Pike looks dead sexy with a blade) and I like how cocky Graves gets before he's sucked into a plane engine (one of my fave villain deaths, although Brosnan's quip kills it). I'm also terrified of being sucked out of a plane, so it figures I feel this scene is more exciting/dangerous!

    So, my list would be:

    1) LTK
    2) TSWLM
    3) OHMSS
    4) YOLT
    5) DAD

    TB and OHMSS for me.
  • Good thread. I take it you mean the final showdown rather than the end scene (I'll start up a seperate thread for that!)?

YOLT always works as a great finale.

OHMSS is awesome...the helicopter attack, the commandos, Bond sliding down with the machine gun..

TMWTGG - I like the way they rehearse the shoot-out from the beginning..

MR - say what you like, it's pretty spectacular..and when they're chasing down the last satellite it's still exciting

OP - great fun, but the real excitement is when Rog is trying to stop the bomb

I'll have to think through the others......

Well, Rog's stunt double went out with style. Moore goes out cooing like a lost lamb. Putrefaction!

Agreed, Roger deserved much better than that finale.
  • LTK and OHMSS are just perfection. A perfect blend of intense action, and a stunning personal side to Bond. "Don't you want to know why?"gets me everytime.

    "For England James?"

    "No...for me"

    Aaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!

Bond looks down at Trevelyan, smiles at Natalya, jumps on the helicopter before it flies away and everything blows up.

Who said Brosnan was always upstaged by Bean ;)

TSWLM..."Keeping the British end up, sir"........ classic, absolutely classic.

I think Rog, not the scriptwriter, came up with that line.

I found the battle in the volcano lair in YOLT to be even more extravagent when I watched it yesterday. It really is at the pinncale of "Big Bond Battles." You've got everything from explosions, to sword-fighting ninjas, to machine gun fire, to pistols, to rappeling ninjas, I mean the list is endless!

YOLT, TSWLM, GF and GE are great.

But my favourite is the LTK finale. It's not a big scale battle like the others but it's still awesome. The whole tanker chase is great, and Bond killing Sanchez is my favourite Bond moment in the series.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service takes top spot, such a great final battle, and then a real emotional trip right after it. One of the best endings, not just for a Bond film, but for any adventure film of all time.

Goldeneye is a close second, with some neat direction by Campbell, and some real good edgy fighting between Brosnan and Bean. I also quite liked the music in the finale of this, and the song over the credits has grown on me.

Thunderball, with some of the best underwater battle scenes ever put to film. I don't think they dragged very much at all, I was never bored and Barry's music was simply epic. The only thing that bothers me is the rear projection during Bond and Largo's fight.

Casino Royale, well, "The Name's Bond, James Bond.." just explains it all really. Some great model work on the Venice finale, and everytime I see Craig tower over Christensen with the UMP in his hand, I feel proud to be a Bond fan.

Tomorrow Never Dies, I personally love this finale, and it's easily one of the most entertaining of the series. People give out about Bond becoming Rambo in this, but I have no problem with it. The 90's were the time of the action hero and Bond needed to keep up. The Stealth Boat set was fantastic, Carver's & Stamper's death were both cool, and Brosnan was at his best physically. Great music too, and Wai Lin was cool.

@CraigMooreOHMSS, I quite enjoyed the TND finale, as well. The entire run-and-gun, escaping Stamper as explosions take place all over the stealth boat setting was really entertaining. Love the talk that Carver and Bond have while Bond has Gupta held hostage.
