Agreed. From Russia With Love is better off the way it is. A spy thriller with little action. And the budget for it was perfect as was the production design to represent the atmosphere.

The only time Bond ever had trouble with the budget and the representative atmosphere was during the 1980s. Roger Moore is my favourite Bond, granted. But, his films post-FYEO and Dalton's LTK look awfully tired. Die Another Day, at least going for CGI, could've used more dedicated time and budget to adjust the needs of what sparked absurdity over the years after its release. I mean, that parachute surfing tsunami scene could've used a lot more budget, talent and skills to have made more realistic so at least people wouldn't have complained about its second rate cheap video game image.

But, with films like Spectre and Quantum of Solace, the budget was misused big time. They could made those films with $100 million less budget and it might have been more terrific, so they wouldn't have to worry about spending the money. With these films, it's like the more money they had, the more they wasted, and neither was well spent. I mean, what's the point of having big explosions or rare bespoke sports cars to not use them properly, have them just roar their engines, perform a top gear race and call it a car chase? Afraid to damage the vehicles with the intense chase? Don't waste money on bespoke cars made for the film specially. Bring in common equipment that can be bought again at cheaper price. Remember how many times the car rotating stunt was performed with the DB9 impersonating the DBS in Casino Royale and it was praised for its presented image AND entered the world records? See, know how to handle your production. Don't go big. Go smart and strategic. Don't sleepwalk. It's not about the size, it's how you use it.

Why remake the books that have been done before when there are the subsequent continuation novels waiting?

Because they have no plans or good stories and bond can't survive forever in the modern day he belongs in the time period he was written where they can bang out a film every two years because they are just faithfully adapting the novels so they don't need to waste four years getting ideas and then for the next 30 or so years we will have strong modern bond films

Nonsense. Bond was created in the cold war but he doesn't and shouldnt be exclusively resigned to that period just because you think it means an increase in film frequency.
Frwl is amazing but what if they pumped 200 million bucks into it and made it bigger that would be incredible

First of all, a Bond movie doesn't need to be 200 million. It's precisely these inflated budgets that are one of many problems plaguing this series. Secondly, have you actually read FRWL? We dont need a FRWL movie thats bigger than what we got in '63.

I have read it I guess it doesn't need 200 million but I dunno maybe they could do a casino Royale style half and half

I think very few of us ask for straight adaptations of the old Fleming novels anymore. That is not really the point of discussion. What would be interesting though is to take small elements or scenes and develop them into greater stories. Some of the best moments in the novels are yet to be filmed, and it would bring some Flemingesque style into the modern films. And at the very least it would be a source of inspiration for writers who openly claim they are in lack of it...

CR, for me, remains the best Craig Bond and best Bond since OHMSS, but I think a huge part of that is due to the fact they had such great Fleming material to draw upon. I think there's still plenty of material they've not really touched in Fleming which they could still explore. After SP, getting to grips with YOLT seems an obvious route, as many here have suggested.

I think mining the novels is fine as the always knowledgable Colonel says and I would agree about CR and OHMSS the same but adapting the novels wholesale just seems a backward step.

Also a Madmen period take on Bond would be sating just a cliche specialist faction of the fanbase.

Just remember this series isn't your own little sand pit to play in, this is a hugely successful series 50 + years old and it hasn't got that way pandering to fan boys wet dreams.

If you haven't realised in the time you've been a fan and think all of a sudden your dreams are going to made a reality you have very naive take on the series you are claiming to be a huge fan of.

I might not have the obsession for Bond that some of you have but I have a considerable more miles on the clock than some of you newbies and I've come to make peace with this long ago.

No I didn't like SPECTRE and due to what it did I sometimes think in some ways I depsise it for all the potential it had but that's just it you'll like some, you'll love some and you might damn well hate some but there is a mixed bag there.

It's quite telling of those that loved SP, now I know some did like it and SF but those that loved it and disliked SP for me are the ones that want tick the box cliches and a throwback to Moore and the Brosnan era.

I don't but it's likely at some point it will return to the series and it will be my choice to hitch aboard or not. I've a feeling this series might well go off in a direction I am not going to like.

To go from 3 films I liked to loved and then with in a space of a few years my opinion and care of has done a 180 degrees on my feelings of where I stand with Bond surprised me. Although its happened and if it's going to go even more towards that it will most likely be my decison to leave the train.

Who knows with what madness is going on in the world at the moment is going to influence how Bond continues. I'm non plussed about it, I'll likely get excited if the ducks start getting into a row in a way I like, although that being said even if the signs look good there is no guarantee I'm going to like the finished product on the screen, SPECTRE is a perfect example of that.

Since EON own the rights to Fleming, they should be doing justice to all his work. That should have been 2nd Gen EON's mandate. After all these years, it's perfectly fine to re-adapt the books. It's not a backwards step, it's a smart step.

Casino Royale was their triumph. They haven't matched it. Screenwriter's original work has proven middling success. I wouldn't mind adaptations of Gardner's best, Horowitz, but why when there is so much Fleming to do. After they've done Fleming full justice, than go for continuation work.

If only EON had understood their own success with CR and kept that team to continue with Fleming...imagine if they went in order of books, we would now have:

    Casino Royale
    Live and Let Die
    Moonraker
    Diamonds are Forever

If they adapted those as well as CR, I don't think many would be complaining. For those who know the books, we know there are great movies there.

I agree with this. If that were the case, we would now be awaiting the 21st Century FRWL.

That's what I'm saying theirs nothing wrong with adapting the books or at least some elements of them but it seems like the community is very divided

They have the PERFECT excuse/opportunity to adapt YOLT properly for Bond 25 if Craig comes back.

That would be some underwhelming and worrisome casting if Dan were poaching those 2.

Maibaum/Wilson were masters of taking small unused bits during the FYEO-LTK run (with a break for AVTAK). Since then, not so much.

There is not a ton of new filmable story left from Fleming. YOLT and MR stand out as not having been adapted to their full potential. And then there are the short stories AVTAK and THR.

DAF and TMWTGG are rather thin on plot left. TSWLM is off limits.

    And that's about it.

I do wonder if, when we get a new Bond, we will see his parents' climbing accident in flashback a la Batman Begins. Frankly, and even though I don't think flashbacks really have a place in Bond (Bond is a forward-looking character), I'd rather Mendes have done that in SP than the foster brother angle.

The more I think about it, Mendes was all wrong for Bond. He took what was a promising direction from CR (and to a lesser degree, QoS) and squandered all that promise on melodrama, navel-gazing, and bloat. And he gave big roles to the MI6 staff. And he saddled Bond 25 with Swann.

If I didn't love Craig so much in the role, I'd say start all over.

Who were some other directors considered for SF besides Mendes?
  • According to this new the article, Bond 25 could end up in Dubrovnik, Croatia. Negotiations about shooting still taking place.

When asked about a possible shooting of the movie, the croatian politician Andro Vlahušić answered: «James Bond is in an advanced stage of negotiations»

At least it finally feels like something is happening, even if we have no idea what it means. I'm having trouble seeing how they could bring all the actors back together, many of whom are busy elsewhere, in time for 2018. This chopper is like a symbol of hope.

M, Q and Moneypenny may only have a few scenes that would need filming.

Exactly. A beginning office scene. Done.

Hmm... they did mention Dubrovnik last year as a possible Bond 25 location. So, we could rule in the Croatian region in confirmation?

So based on the helicopter the location news and the omega endorsement rumor
Either A MGM is self distributing (or the distribution deal is done) this film and Eon have a cast and director in place and the film is coming out next year
    Or
    B) everyone enjoys lying to the public
