His instincts were right about Dalton, though... ;)
Whyle TCA grow on you with more views, whyle i think Die Hard 2 is better then the first one, i think Cliffhanger should is i think/hope be the reasen the Bond producer whant him for Bond 17. But i expect him earlier for Bond 18. The writer of Goldeneye Michael France did Cliffhanger as said earlier and because Renny did The Long Kiss Goodnight. His Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot but not a comedy action movie but a violence action movie . So i wil believe he have done Bond 18 with the return of Michael France if Renny is realy be considert. Mabey the choose of Roger Spottiswoode can have something to do with him. TMND have for a part a dificult story to understand in the first view but it be clear from the documentry's there whant at more humor and not more violence. The Long Kiss Goodnight whas and stil be those days a R-rated (16+) movie. In general this movie and Die Hard 2 be Thrillers with not much humor and very slow.
Last year i saw 12 Rounds. In my opnion 24 meet Speed meets Die Hard 2 meets The Event. Who liked Die Hard 2 and always like to so Speed 2 can be entertaint for the 103 minutes it take. Missing the more depth and humor of those movies. Known people you should not expect in this movie or you must remember in Erica, the bitch from it later made (but earlier seen in The Netherlands then this movie) The Event. Also the lead actor having a litle bit of Marc Walhberg (Shooter).
Conclusion, i wil be believe Renny can have done Bond 18 (back in 1996) if it be more in the style of Goldeneye with the return of Michael France, the other writer of Goldeneye, the editor, cinematopgrapher (or the cinematographer of Cliffhanger) ) and production designer of Goldeneye (Stil there must seath to another Production designer model supervisor , because Derek Meddings died in 1996.)
But 2012, no. Not enough present experience and 12 Rounds is not good enough Bond aka Shooter or Speed is not how i like to see Bond his future. Michael France in my opnion i don't mind to see return as third writer. Hulk whas to long and Fantastic Four to short, but i like the story. Fantastic Four biggest problem be that is whas made to late, whyle it be the first comic of Stan Lee.
He did not like the actor playing 007, big deal. EON wanted TD and he didn't so they parted ways, which is the way adults handle it when they don't agree with eachother.
The fact that he chose to tell this story should be added to the many possible choices EON could have made. Another one for the 007 history books.
I personally think that Daniel Craig has done a better job with Golden Eye (which came out as a recent computer game]. This version sheds off some of the clichés that were brought in the 1995 film. Personally, I don't think of Renny to be much of an influential celebrity, nevertheless Bond did change in 1995 which had quite a marmite effect on the audience.
F U Harlin! He looks like Quantum's Mr White!:)
He is too opiniated and would not have been easy for Eon to work with. He and Dalton would have clashed anyway. Dalton would not have taken sh*t from him and neither would Eon.
And Cutthroat Island is hardly Pirates Of The Caribbean.
Good on Eon for having integrity and showing him the door. I think he sounds sour because even after they recast, he was not considered. So that speaks volumes.
Dalton was a great Bond and his potential was untapped. I prefer Dalton to Bruce Willis any day or Stallone. Dalton would have made his work cut out as a director because he is challenging.

Clive Owen would make a great Bond! I saw him in a Guy Richie directed Madonna video for BMW and he has the right dryness to play the character. And he looks like Dalton which makes me favour him. He was great in Shoot 'Em Up and is a cool dude!
Dear Eon, please keep him in mind. I will camp outside the cinema the night before if you make Bond with him!
Harlin would have given us a serviceable Bond film. Campbell is a good craftsman, but he works to the producer's direction. visionary he aint..if you hate harlin for being a hack, why love campbell so much?
Die Hard 2 is not great, neither is Cliffhanger, though both were influential on the Bond renaissance so it is a myth that Harlin would NOT have matched the 007 ethos! :)
I do like quite a few of his actionmovies, DH2, a long kiss goodbye & Cliffhanger are both movies I have seen pretty often.
I enjoyed this film too. Just because a film flops at the box office , it doesn't necessarily mean it is a bad movie. In my opinion the second best pirate movie after POTC: Curse of the Black Pearl
