I don't understand why the majority feel that Arnold is an automatic shoe-in for the composer job on B25 when Boyle hasn't worked with Arnold in quite some time. Surely if one name would be top of the list then it would be A.R. Rahman, or even John Murphy? Personally, I feel it's still far too early to be talking about composers whilst the script is still in development. Same goes for the title performer. Though I think it's encouraging to read that Boyle has actually now gone on record as saying he's involved in B25 and that it now matches up with all the recent rumours. The most important thing at this stage is the theme of the movie and what direction the story is going to take. I guess, we the public, won't be finding out that bit of info until at the end of this year at the earliest. Basically, we've still got a long way to go, folks, before we'll hear anything more on the subject.

    I don't assume he is a shoe-in, but I hope so.

I'm surprised Boyle is doing it but he's a director who has dabbled in all different genres and styles of film with some success.

Hopefully we'll get an intelligent Bond film more in the style of Casino Royale.

Boyle is not arrogant IMHO. He knows that he will need to balance the new perspective that he will bring with traditional talent that has a proven track record (plus he has to work within a tight time frame). Arnold ticks all the boxes. He's the obvious choice.

I agree @LeonardPine. I'm also hoping that we'll get see Bond back in a casino once more — something that's been pretty much neglected since Craig's first outing as Bond — and that we come full circle.

Of course, just because Boyle plans to direct Bond 25, it doesn't mean he definitely WILL direct Bond 25. We'll have to wait until MGM confirms a director as it could be that they might not to wait until the end of this year to start.

I don't think of Boyle as an action director, he makes more drama-driven films, but I guess he's a big fan of Bond so fingers crossed he'll do a decent job (if he does get hired).

David Arnold hasn't scored a Bond film for 10 years. In fact, He's barely scored anything for 10 years.

I heard that Arnold had been "blacklisted" in the industry for some reason. I really doubt he'll come back. Danny will bring on his own composer. Alternatively, the true heir apparent, Hanz Zimmer, might finally get to do a Bond film. Though I'm up for something more experimental.

Boyle's most frequent composer is Rick Smith of Underworld. Though he's a bit too "out there" for Bond's more mainstream tastes. Boyle has shown a tendancy to cater to the mainstream and hire a studio-approved composer when required. On "Steve Jobs" he hired Daniel Pemberton.

Though, he's most known for experimental, propulsive music playing under his modern films. I wouldn't expect David Arnold to be the man to do that. Anyone who has seen T2 will know how important music is to that affair.

Also, I've watched A LOT of Danny Boyle interviews recently and he isn't a fuddy-duddy obsessed with the past (so no David Arnold). He loves young, new talent and giving people a break. He hired both Wolf Alice and Young Fathers to contribute to T2's soundtrack over more established names.

I'll also bet £1 million that Boyle shoots his own title sequence. He loves projection (akin to Robert Brownjohn) and some of the trippy visuals in T2 are basically mini surrealistic pieces that could work as title sequence concepts.

His involvement surely shows that there is a chance things can be saved. They have their work cut out for them, that's for sure. 3:-O

Agreed. Despite being overjoyed with Danny and more so with Hodge ousting P&W I'm slightly trepidatious with this 'big idea' they have.

You'd hope Babs & MGW were not so desperate to get them that they have signed up for some ridiculous notion that makes brothergate looks like peak Fleming.

But overall it's a risk worth taking to get some fresh and talented blood in.

Boyle is 61, not exactly fresh blood. I'm happy we have someone at last and someone capable, but I have the feeling we are getting a different kind of Mendes so to speak.

The little action he has directed has been pretty impressive (28 Days Later) but there hasn't been any big action sequences, although I haven't seen all of his output.

“We are working on a script right now. And it all depends on that really. I am working on a Richard Curtis script at the moment. We hope to start shooting that in 6 or 7 weeks. Then Bond would be right at the end of the year. But we are working on them both right now.”

Which confirms to me that he is also involved with the script, which is good in my view.
I don't know anything about Hodge but at least Boyle knows his Fleming.

The second unit director handles most/all of the big action in Bond films? We tend to think of the director handling all of the film but it's not the case so whoever is given the second unit director's job will have a big say on how the action looks, I guess. Some fans were a bit underwhelmed by the car chase in SPECTRE - which was hyped as a big scene with huge car damage! - so it would be nice to see Boyle and his team making some of the action a bit edgier.

Agreed on all counts. Regarding the last point, as long as it's an SF 'kind of Mendes' I'll be quite satisfied. Hopefully so, as Boyle for a first film suggests it will be the realization of an auteur's vision like the earlier film, rather than an auteur's feeble attempt at formula like the latter.

David Arnold will not score B25 imho. I'm of the opinion with this Boyle confirmation that EON will continue to Oscar bait, and that means a more contemporary up and coming composer. In my view, Pemberton or Desplat fit that bill, but there could be a number of others. It's more possible that Boyle may even experiment with the composer.

Hopefully, if he starts this next film in '6 or 7 weeks' we are looking at a shoot taking him through May, June. After that he has 6 months preparation work on B25 which will probably involve improving the script. Just hope that everyone involved likes this big idea. If not, it's back to square one.

Well it’s not who I expected but it’s not horrible I guess at least it’s not Mendes... kind of shocked as he said in 2013 he would never direct Bond... also vaguely worried Pancho might be right and the events of Spectre will be largely ignored can we at least have a throw away line at an adventure where swann was killed bond killed Blofield in revenge and rejoined the 00 service the continuity nerd in me really feels uncomfortable with letting all the Spectre plot thread remain unresolved

Hodge won't deliver a duff script. For me Boyle will Direct what he delivers. A Fleming enthusiast he probably has had an idea for many years sitting to build on. Looking at his prior work, I think it will be dark, gritty thriller with a nice twist. We may finally get something on par with Casino. Fingers crossed.

Death of the current timeline and continuation.

Eon and the distributor perhaps still nursing wounds from the Logan debacle. This time they're wisely hedging.

Could be. Never heard of them before. All the other stories on this—Digital Spy, Yahoo UK—are using them as their source.

I think it's more than wishful thinking — there is some probability to it. I'm not particularly pulling for him — I'm open to him taking another shot (there's a certain attraction because it's Craig's last) but I'd be equally pleased for Pemberton or like fresh blood.

My thinking was along the lines of: Arnold was the composer across multiple directors and eras until Mendes became involved; Boyle doesn't seem married to any composer; he's worked with Arnold a couple times prior; therefore...

I have no idea about this blacklist. Sounds spurious.

That's fair. There is always a possibility of his return, but I still believe that EON is going to shoot for a new approach with Boyle, like they did to some extent with Mendes. Out with the old and in with the new in more ways than one.

Regarding his so called 'blacklist': I seem to recall reading something about it here before. I don't know anything about that, but he is not as prolific in the film space as he once was for some reason (I recognize he's been doing tv work instead).

I don't believe anything off all of it! Firstly, I don't see any reason why Boyle should break those big news to some completely obscure outfit when he could talk to the times as well?
Secondly I find the thought that EON should be willing to get cramped into his schedule very, let's say troubling. I would rather think that that there are not that horny for an auteur director to just accept any condition. If this is really true it indeed would show that they lack any kind of confidence in their own product. After all, it is not that the James Bond franchise had needed some auteurs/big namers to prosper the last 50 years.
