I thought I'd take this opportunity to share (again) video I made for QoS a while back...

    Well made. Wow!

This could have made a great official trailer! Lots of thought was put into it.

You can't go wrong with a darker Bond movie; it gets better with time and often becomes a future investment with the following movie.

    Look at OHMSS-DAF, LTK-GE, and QoS-SF

Of course each of the follow-ups were often disappointing and never got better with time. Each of those are easily-dated as much as the music of GE (minus The Experience of Love at the end).

Yep. Both total low points in the series for me, although SF is probably better than GE.
  • @Berry

SF and GE are films that made lots of money but they didn't age quite well. Each of those three films weren't very well connected to the loose ends left by their preceeding films. They often involved less-blood, less grit, lightened up tones of forced upon humor, fell back to relying upon gadgets, etc.

Curious comments here. Not sure why GE would need to connect to LTK to tie up whatever loose ends there were. And gadgets have been relied upon in all 25 films.

Not quite in CR and QoS....it wasn't to the point where the gadget itself was predictably set up to get Bond out of trouble, i.e. the signature gun in the CGI komodo pit. It's as though a significant portion of the movie was set up around the gadget as a way to celebrate the return of a Q.

GE was really meant for Timothy Dalton's return, and the car racing scene at the beginning was supposed to be Bond's reevaluation to return to work after having left in LTK. LTK had a lot of drama and significantly more grit in which issues that affected Bond's personal behavior were included. GE was watered down and used a lot of glitz in lieu of continuing Dalton's streak of creating character-driven pieces.
  • QoS hold its own....Camille's character was good enough for her own spinoff, although the actress' performance earned her the chance to play in future films like Oblivion in similar fashion.

Felix and Beam...just the name sounds like a semi-dramatic sitcom taking place before the latter gets fired in which they travel the world with all these jokes and politics and how Felix is conflicted often with making his own judgement calls based on ethics versus following Beam's orders. Perhaps the film or show could display how Beam gets fired and how Monica Belucci meets up with Felix with a message at the end.

This would be a sales-driver for blu-ray sales of Bond 25 or the re-release of any Bond movies prior to Bond 25 getting released as a tie-in to the film.

Part of me wishes we got a more formal follow-up to QOS. I've always considered it a misunderstood Bond film that works well if you view it as more of an extended coda to CR. It helps if you look at the two as one really long Bond story.
It's just too bad we couldn't get a Bond film in-between QOS and SF. Although on the flip side the 4 year break helped build up anticipation for SF to a fever pitch. A break I was hoping we wouldn't be waiting through again quite so soon.

    BTW great video @MadeleineSwann

Yes. A QOS style third film to explore Guy Haines and Quantum is the dream. Then we could have had sad and old Bond in skyfall
  • Yes, I'm surprised they never even followed up on the Guy Haines issue. They still have a chance.

How would you outline the screenplay for a better follow-up to QoS that could fit in with SP?

I guess in a perfect world we get the original ending to QOS with Bond killing off Mr. White before formally "introducing" himself to Guy Haines. From that point we get a direct follow-up to the Quantum storyline (preferably using one of the unused Fleming titles) in the Fall of 2010 concluding an epic Bond Begins trilogy. After that we get Skyfall in Fall 2012 just as we did and it is it's own stand-alone film. This could still work with Bond feeling older and beaten down as the CR/QOS/Bond 23 films would've occurred immediately after one another, all taking place in 2006/early 2007 with Skyfall taking place on the year of it's release in 2012 (or in 2015 seeing as how Spectre takes place months not years after SF).
True, this would've necessitated changes in the story to Spectre but if anything that might've improved the film IMHO.

I just think of that exchange between Bond in Greene in QOS.
"I answered your questions. I told you wanted you wanted to know about Quantum."
    "Yes, you did."
I feel as though that's a set-up to a huge payoff that we never get. I get that Spectre sort of ties it up but it skirts around the events of QOS particularly as Quantum itself is barely addressed. And I have a hard time believing that Bond and M would just disregard Quantum and put them out of their minds for so many years.

That's a great question. I'd have to think about it more but it'd involve Bond hunting down Quantum members and going head-to-head with the organization on a more direct and aggressive level. The film would end with either Bond defeating Quantum once and for all or atleast thinking he did before finding out that Quantum was simply serving a much more powerful master in Spectre in the titular film.
  • @DoubleOhhSeven Nice points you make about the big setups we got in QoS which haven't been followed upon.

Please update when you have thought it through.

Some of the editing is ropey but I think people exaggerate slightly how much of this is an issue

    +1

As widely noted, QoS was awash with challenges, due to the WGA strike. A lesser director would have mucked it up. QoS had a few things going for it:

    1. Daniel Craig
    2. Most of the action pieces are tremendous; the fight with Slate is the single greatest Bond bad@ss moment of all time.
    3. Locales. The Tosca sequence, while a little contrived, is a standout moment in the Craig era and features David Arnold’s single greatest film composition. The desert hotel is memorable, as the opposite of PizGloria.

My main complaints about QoS are minor:

    1. The plane scene: a missed opportunity to have Bond and Camille connect a little more. Instead, they are attacked in the air too quickly for my liking.
    2. Felix (and maybe Beam, too) are underutilized.

    Cool idea @dramaticscenesofQOS

I wouldn’t want mr white killed at the end of QOS, such a waste of a character it would have been. Instead they just wasted him in spectre

I like @DoubleOhhSevens idea quite a bit. I think a missed opportunity was not having C actually be Haines.

This should have been the Craig era IMO:
    •Casino Royale (2006)

•Quantum of Solace (2008) - Put the gunbarrel at the beginning, slow down the editing a tad, flesh out the Haines storyline, and keep the original ending with White and Haines.

•Risico (2010) - This would take place a couple years after QOS. Quantum is presumed to be dead but resurfaces and sends it's chief executioner after Bond. This movie would be about the organization declaring war on MI6, Bond coming face to face with the leader, and destroying Quantum by the end. Done in the same style as CR/QOS.

    •Skyfall (2012)

Craig goes out on a high. A new Bond comes in and we have some badass, standalone SPECTRE films.

I'd like something similar only with Craig going further than Skyfall. Had their not been behind the scenes problems with EON and the producers/Craig not being especially eager to get back to work, I don't see why we couldn't have had atleast 6 Daniel Craig Bond movies by now.

    *Casino Royale (2006)

*Quantum of Solace (2008)- Preferably with a more polished script.

    *Risico/The Hildebrand Rarity (2010)

    *Skyfall (2012)

....the producers and Craig take an extra year for a well deserved break and to wait for Mendes

*Spectre (2015)- Obviously with a script that takes the changes in the series into effect.

*Bond 26 (Fall 2018)- Craig's swansong if he even agreed to return for a 6th film.

I don't see any reason why we couldn't have gotten a Bond film by Fall of 2018. I mean I know why we didn't. Craig took forever and a day to confirm that he'd be returning and EON didn't seem to be taking a very aggressive approach in getting things moving. All I'll say is that Cubby Broccoli would've never have put up with this BS. He would've forced Craig into a decision or move on without him as making these films seemed like a much bigger priority to him than it does to his family.

You must be disappointed in films like FRWL and TLD too, as the gadgets were set up exactly the same there.

Gadgets are fine if they are used well. The exploding watch in spectre is used quite well, so I’m fine with that, like the gadget in Frwl, however the more cartoony stuff like the jacket in twine is irritating. Bond doesn’t need gadgets to be bond. They are cool if warranted but shouldn’t be a must.

I love that Craig finally got a gadget watch, but the LED countdown was clearly CGI. I prefer practical effects.

On topic, QOS really only had the phone, but its features seemed mostly realistic.

  • Cubby's approach to making the movies too frequently would compromise the quality of the film often. These days, as fewer people go to the movies as ticket prices are $20 and over, each film needs to be well-thought out. Apparently, EON was smart enough to reboot Bond early on before a slew of reboots plagued Hollywood.

Plus, with each of Craig's films, except for QoS, they are long enough to give us better transition and character development although Sam Mendes' direction didn't quite live up to its potential on his two films.

Valid points. And while I'm certainly not expecting a movie every other year like we got for decades, these two gaps of 4 years and 4 1/2 years during the Craig era are simply too much in the opposite direction. It doesn't take nearly half a decade to give us a solid Bond movie. Other film franchises put out quality entries in less time. Hell, Mission: Impossible just put out their most acclaimed and financially successful entry 3 years after their previous acclaimed and financially successful entry.
3 years between movies should be more than sufficient for the Bond series.
Plus, waiting around for an actor to make up their mind for 2 years is absurd no matter how you slice it.

But the exploding watch wasn't used well, it was one of the weakest points of SP for me and part of why that section of the film is so unsatisfying. Here is Bond trapped in an impossible situation and instead of ingenuity, the creative team opts for the laziest way out: a convenient gadget.

Makes me shudder to think if Bond had a similar device in GF's laser table sequence. Same torture concept, but Bond uses wits to survive, which is much more satisfying than yet another big bang.

And this was after Mendes' SF, where they were cheeky enough to act like they "don't really go in" for exploding gadgets anymore.
