He said he didn't turn down CR. Not that he was never offered Bond.

True... when I get chance I think I'll look at Bond related news stories during the six year hiatus, I know Owens name was mentioned during that period of uncertainty as well as other rumours, it will be interesting to revisit that time.

Owen's name was also mentioned around the time Skyfall was halted due to MGM's bankruptcy.

I always have said it and some found it laughable but... in my opinion, back in the day, Billy Zane would've been a terrific Bond. I've seen him play British characters and he doesn't seem to have a problem with the language. In the early to mid 90s, he even had a likeness matching to that of a young Connery's.

I remember Zane in Twin Peaks in the early 90's he certainly had the look, I'll probably get shot down though I liked The Phantom lol

I love The Phantom, as well, @Fire_and_Ice_Returns. I watch it back to back with Baldwin's The Shadow whenever I get to either of them.

I have The Shadow also I managed to get the Collectors Edition wide-screen version on Bluray a few years back I was very happy, the dvd copy I had previously was hacked to pieces. Both fun films, The Shadow is very underrated.

    Most certainly!

In fact, that film got me into reading The Shadow pulps in the first place.

I saw both The Phantom and The Shadow ages ago. Both great films as I recall.

I love the tagline. Quite apropos for the times. Perhaps #MeToo could adopt it:

"who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men"

One of my favourite moments in comic books films is when Baldwin's hypnosis fails on Penelope Anne Miller it's very funny, Baldwin is a legend in The Shadow.

Back on topic I know Baldwin was linked with Batman, was he ever linked with Bond?

He's like Samuel Jackson. Serial scene chewer who you just wait for the drop the mic speech from.

Yes, clearly not Bond material but he really brings something to a movie. For members outside the UK, he sends himself up wonderfully here: (I know we are drifting but it's better than silence)

Billy Zane would have made a great Batman (I'm surprised he was never cast in the 90s) and was great as The Phantom (which deserved a sequel). But can't see him as Bond. On principle I'm strongly against Americans playing British characters.

I would’ve rather had Owen over Craig, personally.

Better make that two. In 2005 we had names like Clive Owen, fast forward 13 years, and now we have... Harry Styles. Good god, what the hell happened?

"These are the new leads. These are the Glengarry leads. And to you, they're gold. And YOU don't get them. Why? Because to give them to you is just throwing them away. They're for closers."

I can remember reading a review at the time of THE SHADOW in which the reviewer had the opinion, Baldwin would have made an excellent Bond, put the part had been recently accepted by Pierce.
Not so sure about Bond, but I could easily see Baldwin as Mike Hammer.

I love The Shadow, been meaning to watch The Phantom for a while; it looks like fun! Billy Zane is actually a very charismatic actor.

    - I admire your courage, Miss...
    - Trench, Sylvia Trench. I admire your luck, Mister...
    - F*** YOU, that's my name!
  • I'm glad we didn't get a charisma vacuum like Owen as Bond (I'm assuming charisma vacuum sounds negative).

I love The Shadow, and I enjoy The Phantom. Now if only there had been a Shadow vs Phantom film.

tbh I don't think Clive Owen would've been a good Bond at all. Saw him in Valerian recently and as always he didn't impress me.

Better than having a thuggish hunchback as Bond (Hardy).

Turner and Hardy are probably the best choices at the moment.
