While I love the movie as is, a film featuring Connery and Eastwood, in their primes, would have been epic.
Yeah but it's just my opinion. There is something Bondian in this movie and Burton's role is that kind of womanizer...
I can see it as a The Fugitive type film where they eventually join forces against a greater threat.

Having watched all of the Dirty Harry films for the first time over the last few years on Blu-ray I'd have to say I'm in total agreement with your views on the films, @DarthDimi.
I must admit it's been too long since I watched all of them to really rank them from memory, but dissing Sudden Impact may be sort of misplaced on a Clint Eastwood Appreciation thread, since it's the only one of the five movies that he also directed.

I wouldn't call it a bad film as such, just the weaker of these five. The plot is a bit too simple for my taste. While Dirty Harry and Magnum Force make the viewer think about his politics and whom he'd side with during many of the bigger and smaller debates these films have to offer, Sudden Impact rarely challenges one's views. Eastwood directing the film is a plus but not good enough, I'm afraid, to earn extra points. ;-)

Been a while since I watched all the Dirty Harry films though the first and then second are the best for me.
Sudden Impact is perhaps not as thematically "provocative" as some of the other films, but it is viscerally so: It is a pretty nasty, dark film. The bad guys are irredeemable scumbags, the violence is intense, and happens in unexpected ways too (the heart attack, the dog). That reinforces the Dirty Harry vibe. The film is also literally very dark in places, no doubt a Don Siegel influence.
I wish Magnum Force hadn't included the scenes with the female neighbor. It takes the film away from the laser-focus, intense style of its predecessor.
In the end, Sudden Impact and Magnum Force are films with certain qualities I admire more than enjoy.
And I wish Schifrin had scored The Enforcer. The foot chase music doesn't aim for the serious tone that Schifrin would have brought to it.
I never liked it. At the end of the day the original 'Dirty Harry' remains King. Don Siegel does a tremendous job, Clint is superb, Andy Robinson a standout bad guy, and of course Lalo Schifrins brilliant score with terrific action set pieces!
Magnum Force is great. Maybe it's the best of them.
The original is the original but the third act of the movie is not that great.

Every time I watch this scene it send chills down my spine, the pale horse wow.
“When he opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come!” And I looked, and behold, a pale horse! And its rider’s name was Death, and Hades followed him. And they were given authority over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword and with famine and with pestilence and by wild beasts of the earth.” Matthew 24:9-10 reads “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name’s sake. And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another.”
I need to buy Pale Ruder on Bluray.

This is one of the best films I have ever seen.
I am so fed up up with modern cinema though thankful for its failings, modern cinema's incompetence has led me back to greatness.
Eastwood has never been better, but it's Andy Robinson who owns this movie, giving audiences the most chilling and terrifying villain ever put to screen.
It sits right at the top of my wishlist for titles I want to see released in 4K and receive glorious Premium packaging.
In the meantime, I am quite content with my custom DH steelbook and soundtrack cd.
At the time I was in college and for a bit of income I had signed up with a company that provided extras for films.
Watching movies being made was incredibly interesting, but it can be a very tedious process. There is a lot of waiting as shots are set up. With that said, Eastwood and company moved relatively quickly.
Nice steel book, I don't have Dirty Harry on CD though I do have Magnum Force soundtrack and the Dirty Harry Boxset...
When I was young I convinced myself Tightrope was a Dirty Harry film for a while.
Although it doesn't measure up to the first film, Magnum Force was a great sequel with some fine perfomances by Holbrook and Soul. Schifrin, as usual delivered a stellar score.
Magnum Force is my second favorite of the series, cracking main theme.
Dirty Harry is a masterpiece in direction I last watched it a few years ago and was blown away by how good it was, it had been some time since I had watched it.
I rewatched Magnum Force last night, it really gives Dirty Harry a run for its money as best film in the series. Magnum Force is a perfect film, brilliant action and stunt work, the locations incredibly vivid with excellent cinematography. The scenes in Harry's apartment block add a lot to the film, I like how the villains Harry goes up against are a mirror to him.
It is my favorite. One of the best sequels ever.
Totally agree incredible sequel, I started watching The Enforcer after had to stop as it was late though I could already see a quality drop from the first two outings.
That was intentional I believe! They got some criticism from some critics (Pauline Kael being one!) for Harry being a fascist, so they made the villains cops in MF, so Harry could show (to paraphrase) even though he hates the system, he'll stick with it until something better comes along! Still think its amazing that Michael Cimino and John Milius did the screenplay!! (Milius did contribute to 'Dirty Harry' and was rumoured to be the one who came up with "Do you feel lucky?" speech!
I watched that last night I was looking for reviews and rankings of Dirty Harry films on YouTube, I found another great commentary by QT on the Parker/Walker character from Point Blank and various other films that was very insightful.
I stumbled on a few discussions and Pauline Kael name cropped up numerous times, its fascinating how the films were received at the time (before I was born). Don Siegel was a known Liberal I believe? As a side note I am looking forward to listening to John Milius commentary on Magnum Force.
Just had a double bill of Sudden Impact and The Dead Pool thoroughly enjoyed both films for different reasons. There really is not a bad Dirty Harry film and all have value, Sudden Impact posed a lot of questions to me as the viewer throughout and was much better than I had remembered.The Dead Pool was just great fun with Eastwood dead panning his way through the film to good effect.
I have a lot of nostalgia for these films as we are so far removed from no nonsense characters that Eastwood frequently played.
All the Dirty Harry films are stunning in High Definition, San Francisco tends to look great shot on film when done right.
