Curiously those are two films that I've yet to see. I know I have a DVD of Murder by Death so watching that would be a start I suppose.
What Peter Falk films have you seen?

    Here's what I've watched:
    -The Great Race
    -Griffin and Phoenix
    -Murder by Death
    -Happy New Year

    What I want to watch:
-It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (I've already seen his participation in it though)
    -A Woman Under the Influence
    -Mikey and Nicky
    -The Cheap Detective
    -The Brink's Job
    -The Princess Bride
    -Vibes
    -Cookie
    -and maybe The In-Laws

For someone who's seen every Columbo episode multiple times I've seen very few Peter Falk films. I remember seeing him in a comedy film where he played an old mob boss who was in hospital but that's about it. I also saw him as the preacher in the TV adaptation of Conan Doyle's The Lost World. So only really stuff from later in his career. I'd like to see the films he made with John Cassavetes and Murder Inc. for his Oscar-nominated performance there.
I haven't seen Corky Romano but I'm thinking it's probably that one. I haven't seen The Lost World either but I think Matthew Rhys is in it, which is probably why he was asked to be in Columbo Likes the Nightlife.

Yes, Corky Romano, that's the one. I couldn't remember the title. Probably not his best work. I remember he was in his rather grouchy persona in that one. He was good as the preacher who goes mad in The Lost World. That's a good point about Matthew Rhys. I like that last episode of Columbo. The first killing in that one reminds me of Season 1's Death Lends a Hand somewhat and it's my favourite Columbo episode. I have seen snippets of Peter Falk's films on YouTube but I'd really like to see both The In-Laws and Husbands in particular. I'vev also heard that A Woman Under the Influence and Mikey and Nicky are good too. Will have to get them ordered up soon. It's high time I explored some of Peter Falk's other work outside of Columbo.

Thanks for the heads up @Dragonpol, and thanks to @Risico007 for sharing this in the first place. I forgot to mention it but I actually downloaded the video from YouTube when he first shared it; I didn't want this rarity to slip off my hands. I briefly checked out Bert Freed's performance and it's interesting to see the differences between his take on the role and Peter Falk's. I haven't watched the episode in full but I will in the short term.

I'll have to download it myself. Is there a way to do that on YouTube?
They don't provide a way of downloading videos on the YouTube website, but you can search on the internet for a third party website that allows you to download them.

    In fact, here's one:
    https://en.savefrom.net/1-youtube-video-downloader-8/

Just paste the URL of the video on the box, click on the light green download button, and then on the dark green download button. And close the ad!

Thanks for that information on how to download a video from YouTube, @mattjoes. I'll have to do that soon.

Did you do this in the end? Because unfortunately the video's been taken down now and I've searched everywhere for a copy to watch to no avail.

No, sadly I didn't. I noticed that the video was taken down very shortly after this. I did get to watch it once before it was taken down (presumably due to copyright issues) but that was it. Perhaps @mattjoes has a copy downloaded that he could share with you? I wouldn't mind having a copy of it myself so I could watch it again.

Although it's not the show itself here's a video on Vimeo of a discussion on the Enough Rope episode that was put up around the same time:

Sorry I don't have a copy of the episode itself but it seemed to only be up a very short time until it was taken down again, presumably on copyright infringement grounds. I've heard that you can book in to see the episode at a Film and TV museum somewhere in the United States but @mattjoes might be able to help you get a copy instead.

Just looking through the next weeks schedule for TV (UK) to see what is worth recording, I noticed that The Cheap Detective (1978) is on TalkingPicturesTV 21:05 on Tuesday 27th December.

You know I've had a DVD copy of Murder by Death for a few years now but I've still not gotten around to watching it yet. I'll have to make a point of doing that and of watching The Cheap Detective too. I don't think I can get that channel but I'll try to pick it up on DVD some time.

TalkingPicturesTV is channel 82 on Freeview where I am in the North of England.

It has been a long time since I saw The Cheap Detective, very much looking forward to viewing it again.

Murder By Death I watched countless times in my youth, the movie has a great cast, Guinness, Sellers, Falk to name a few. Murder By Death is a fun parody of super sleuth's.

What a Columbo reboot might look like:

Thanks to my old pal @PropertyOfALady for alerting me to the fact that Columbo is set to be released as a full Blu-ray boxset later this year. According to this video the series will be split into two sets - the original 1970s series and the 1989-2003 newer series. There will be commentary tracks, extras and archival interviews included:

I guess this will be a Region A release? I love my cigar box set of DVDs, but I would upgrade to Blu-ray if it can be played on Region B players.

I think so, but hopefully it'll be available across the different regions. Has Region A replaced Region 1? I've seen it mentioned here once before but I'm afraid I don't really keep up with these tech things.

I know that there was a Japanese full Blu-ray set of Columbo released a few years ago but it was prohibitively expensive. These new sets sound better anyway as there's extras. The Columbo DVD sets and the first two seasons released on Blu-ray are very bare bones when it comes to extras so this is very welcome news.

Here's everything you have to know about region coding :

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_region_code

    For DVDs :

    For Blu-Rays :

Ah, so Blu-rays have a different region code based on letters as opposed to numbers. That makes sense now. Thanks.

Had a look at the Japanese release too, years ago – but as you mention, it was very expensive. Extras aren't that important to me, but I'd love to watch Columbo in the best picture quality possible.

Yes, as good as extras are after the relative dearth of extras on the releases up to now the main draw will be seeing all of the Columbo episodes in superior picture quality for the first time. Hopefully these two new Blu-ray boxsets will be more affordable than the Japanese boxset was some years ago!

Yes, me too. It'll be interesting to see what they come up with. I agree that the cigar box was a lovely and iconic touch for the DVD boxset. I have pretty much all the releases on DVD, including individual seasons, as I bought them as they came out from 2005 onwards. I also have the first two seasons on Blu-ray as that is all that has been released in Region A prior to this.

I bought a couple of single season releases too, before jumping on what was a cheaper route to get them all, with the cigar box set. The two single season releases are essentially the very same as the corresponding seasons in the box set.

No doubt The Columbophile will keep us updated about the release!

I was looking through my cigar boxset today whilst sorting my movue room, I decided to do a chronological rewatch of all 69 TV movies. I also have them all recorded on my Freeview Play Digital recorder for convenience, though been recorded from TV have adverts. I may hold off on the rewatch as wait for the Bluray boxset, that's a must purchase for me.

I have four Bluray players at least 2 of them are multi region players if that becomes an issue.
