The fact that he was apparently favouring Villeneuve suggests they have an approach in mind with him. Can Demange or Mackenzie fit into that, or did they come up with some other suggestions during their reported earlier talks with EON (which were happening prior to Craig's commitment)? This is the question.
There is very little evidence that Soderbergh is in contention.
I would be more than happy with a middle road op/ tnd adventure bond film from craig. Of course whatever does end up happening this won't be their goal. They can aspire to greatness/ take risks but not be overly ambitious as to make a pretentious film like sp.
That scene, for example, where Gina Carano's character finds out she was double crossed at the stable full of hay with the body of the man she rescued days earlier found dead.
And with Michael Fassbender's character discussing a deal with the opposition while smoking a cigarette.
Very Bondian moments. So, Soderbergh gets my vote.
One doesn't go from Villeneuve as a confirmed prospect to Soderbergh.
They have a tone and idea in mind, and this is first and foremost a Craig film.
As i do PP...he watches and takes the bits that have worked, and adapts them to his way of thinking.
Interestingly, if Villeneuve doesn't get it, I wonder what the optics will look like for whoever eventually gets the job. We all know now that Denis was the first choice.
To be fair though, just because Soderbergh isn't mentioned doesn't mean he is not in the frame .
Agreed.. I love the visuals in QoS, sans awful choices in camerawork and editing during some of the action scenes.
In the same podcast, Villeneuve says he recently got pages back from Dune screenwriter Eric Roth and now it's his (Villeneuve's) turn to go over them.
He also says he's excited about Dune but doesn't know if the movie will get made.

:-)
Including your own? Fact is, you say there are 20+ more Bond films better than SF, and yet there are NOT 20+ more films that performed better at the BO than SF. In adjusted dollars, there are only two. SF was the highest grossing Bond film since TB. That's saying a lot.
Alas, the fact that there are many people out there complaining about the film is also saying a lot.
Wait a minute, you mean the codename theory isn't true? They are all the same guy?
You should have seen the discussion here last year on the subject though. It really went off the rails. Twilight Zone.
I enjoyed reading this. Not everyone is a fan (this happens with EVERY popular movie, no matter what it is), but I think SF is an ideal modern Bond film. A little emotional, but not too much, a perfect amount of action, great characters, awesome settings and cinematography, decent soundtrack (I like it; not amazing not bad), good title song, etc. CR and SF are the true standout Bond films of the modern era. They accomplish everything they are supposed to and rightfully enjoy classic Bond status.
Oops. Cats out of the bag.
Maybe I will, for a laugh. I remember reading one about Skyfall the other day, in which someone was convinced M was literally Bond's mother, and the film presumably stated this openly and unequivocally.
Peter Hunt rolling in his grave. "Bond doesn't cry!"
