As usual @mtm, you're right of course. ;)
  • I don’t think Bond films should all be held to the same standard, and I don’t think that criticisms of Craig’s era can only chalked up to “recency bias” because 3 of 5 of them are amongst the most critically well received of the entire series, and in the case of Skyfall, the most financially successfully of the series. These films are loved by critics, fans, and casual audiences alike, regardless of the opinions of some hardcore fans on here and other places, so I don’t buy any notion that these films are some sort of “underdog” amongst the most vocal criticism lodged at them. At the end of the day, Craig’s tenure was by no means a failure the way some portray it out to be. If anything it’s the biggest success story this series has seen outside the original 60’s run of Bond films, and to a lesser extent Brosnan’s run. Even I can recognize that, and I bluntly think Craig’s tenure is the most overrated when compared to other actors films.

Now Brosnan’s tenure on the other hand? Different story.

Work to reinvent James Bond for post-Craig era hasn’t begun yet, says producer

Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson are interviewed in The Guardian to promote 007's Road To A Million.

    https://www.theguardian.com/film/2023/oct/21/work-to-reinvent-james-bond-for-post-craig-era-hasnt-begun-yet-says-producer

Here's the except from the latest interview:
Producer Barbara Broccoli said there is “a big road ahead” before the character is “reinvented for the next chapter”, and that executives “haven’t even begun” the process of modernising the franchise.

She added that the next film will have to reflect the way the world has changed in the two decades since Craig was confirmed as the sixth 007 and pointed out that Bond has often been reinvented.

“I go back to GoldenEye when everyone was saying ‘the cold war is over, the wall is over, Bond is dead, no need for Bond, the whole world’s at peace and now there’s no villains’ – and boy was that wrong!” she said, adding that modernisation is necessary whenever a new actor plays the part.

With Craig they “wanted to focus on what a 21st-century hero would look like”.

She added: “Daniel gave us the ability to mine the emotional life of the character … and also the world was ready for it. I think these movies reflect the time they are in, and there’s a big, big road ahead reinventing it for the next chapter and we haven’t even begun with that.”

She spoke to the Guardian to promote the new Bond-themed Amazon series, 007 Road to a Million, which she said was “a nice fun thing to be doing in the meantime”.

Broccoli and her half-brother, Michael G Wilson, have been involved in the casting for the global adventure series that features nine pairs of everyday people enduring physical and psychological challenges in Bond-related locations to win £1m. It is the first time the Bond brand has been allowed to be used in unscripted TV and it features the film’s theme tune, epic settings and imagery.

When asked if there might be other Bond TV spin-offs, she said: “Our focus is making the feature films. When we get going on a Bond movie it takes our full attention for three or four years so that’s our focus.

“We make the Bond movies for the big theatrical screen and everything about the Bond movies is for audiences to see around the world on that format, so we’ve not wanted to do television.”

Broccoli said the programme has “same ethos of heroism, courage and fortitude we do in the movies … I think it’s really good entertainment and that’s what people need”.

    Well that rules out 2025.
  • Well that rules out 2025.
    I don't think so.

On a different note, I asked Bing chat to list the 3 directors who are the most likely to direct Bond 26 in her opinion, based on publicly available information. The top 3 according to her, in this order:

    1. Christopher Nolan
    2. Martin Campbell
    3. Denis Villeneuve

I wasn’t saying that all the criticisms thrown at the Craig-era are only because of recency bias, I have my own problems with era as much as I love it: I think Spectre is one of, if not the worst Bond film. but I do think the era is in the “hot seat” partly because of recency bias and that the critical view of the era will loosen somewhat as we get more films in the series, whether the next era is a success or not, because in my opinion, thats what’s happened with other films in the past. We still criticise Die Another Day for what it was, but the conversation isn’t as intense because we’ve moved on and had a whole other era since then.

  • At this rate we will be lucky to get another Bond film this decade. Is one film a decade really a franchise?
  • In terms of you would expect more over a whole decade

It’s dispiriting, that’s for sure. If it’s true I almost wonder why she didn’t lie about it and say that they’re coming up with ideas now the strike is over- just a positive but vague soundbite. I wonder if there’s some sort of politics going on with Amazon.

I’d just keep in mind that the writers strike has only just ended and the actors strike is still ongoing so no matter where EON are at, for now, they can only go so far anyway.

To be honest, hearing this news we maybe even have to wait until 2027 for a new Bond movie. :(

Almost four years after NTTD wrapped and they 'haven't even begun to think about' what they want to do next? Can that actually be true? With everything that's happened, I understand the lack of active progress, but not even begun to think about it? Really?

Maybe it is time for some new blood at the helm, a team that have urgency, want to get cracking as soon as they can, rather than a 4 year time-out, and still not even thought about where they go next. This sounds like the hunger isn't there anymore.

At this stage I'd be happy if the reigns were handed over to Nolan, give him full control. He can't do anymore damage than what has already been done with NTTD, and now the apparent lack of urgency to do another film.

I hardly think that they haven't been thinking about it, I'm sure there have been many discussions between Barbara and Michael. The official work just hasn't begun yet and now we can rule out period bond films now? Given the comments of modernizing the franchise.

Maybe we just have to wait for two more years like people did in 1993 after the last Bond film then was released on 1989.

Christopher Nolan, I wouldn't be that happy. I think I'd be happier if they handed it over to Kevin McClory.

Certainly gives me plenty of time to work on my own Bond 26 script before the real one comes our way.

This isn’t as disappointing as Barbara saying that Purvis and Wade were coming up with ideas. I hope Amazon and IFP push out other Bond products, keeping Bond’s name meaning something in today’s world.

Fans can be so impatient...waiting for the next film to be announced and produced, then wanting to read all the spoilers (why?) before seeing the actual film, then complaining right after release about how long the wait will be for the next one.

We are fortunate because there *will* be a next Bond film. All those Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins fans have been waiting since 1985.

Relax, baby! Ms. Big's gonna take care of you in a minute...
  • I’m honestly not surprised by the news, but I think at this rate, if we reach 2025/2026 and Barbara Broccoli is still saying the same stuff, then there is no defending EON at that point because they would have had nothing but time to get their priorities lined up for Bond 26.

Let’s hope they finally get somewhere soon.

A member in Cbn said that 2029 would be the most likely release of Bond 26, and because (I think he have the point), that if NTTD was released in 2019 without any move in 2023/2024, then we're already waiting for 5 years, since a Bond film was releaed.

So, as he said, if preparations and casting could start in late 2024, development of a script could lead to a director being attached in 2025, with the subsequent rewrites and newly brought in writers, pre-production could start in 2026, with shooting taking place in 2027, post-production in the usual scramble-panic until a release date in late 2027, we would be 8 years later - and six years due to the delay of NTTD.

And he said that 2029 would be the most realistic year to release it.

I’d be happy with the game to tide me over but that might not be out for a while yet either. 2025 at the earliest

and games get delayed all the time so who knows.

Well, the registration have closed since its deadline on April 22, 2022, (last year of April).

So, if the candidates were all ready, and so the set pieces, so I think it would start maybe the first quarter next year (2024), possibly Summer.

Interesting that the article emphasis "executives". Is it referring to Amazon still being in the process of sorting out their new heads of department at MGM?
