Dear Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, two atomic bombs, numbers 4-5-6 and 4-5-7, which were aboard NATO Flight 7-5-9, are now in the possession of the Anti-No Time to Die Brigade of MI6 Community. Unless within the next seven days EON Productions agrees to bring back Daniel Craig as James Bond for one last film with a happy ending, we shall destroy a major city in England or the United States of America. Please signal your acceptance of our terms by arranging for Big Ben to strike seven times at six p.m. tomorrow.

As Marc Tildesley was brought on board by Boyle, and already had started to design the sets, it's quite likely, that they kept some of the sets, when Fukunaga came on board and wanted Tildesley to stay, as he liked the first designs... Tildesley said, that he expected that he would have to leave.

I like Tildesley's work in NTTD paired with its cinematography, but I don't think the Craig era ever nailed what the modern Bond aesthetic and iconography could or should aspire to in the same way the Brosnan era nailed such a specific tone and style for Bond, and a hyper-realistic (and kind of simple, but consistent) location setting for the character throughout that era. Though perhaps with Craig they were the most creative and successful with Tildesley.

Ironic that back when he was cast, a lot of people did not want him as Bond and asked for Brosnan's return.

Well, nothing stops those people from also stealing nuclear bombs.

Thanks for that, I enjoyed it.

    edit.

I'd have loved to have been there at the meeting with the execs.

"We're going to kill him off"
    "What?"
"Yea, it'll be great. Daniel wants to do it"
    "So no more Bond films?"
    "No, we'll carry on"
"Ah, so he's not really dead?"
"No, he's dead, but it's just one version of him that's dead"
    "Eh?"
"No, don't worry, it'll be fine. It's a thing they do now"
"So is James Bond dead or not?"
"Stop asking silly questions, people don't care anymore. He dies in this one, but he'll be back for the next one"
"You can say he escaped. . "
"No, we don't have to do that anymore, people don't give a shit. What's wrong with you, don't you understand the magical nature of a timeline?"
"Isn't that just for sci-fi though?"
"Jesus, are you thick or something? It's a REEEEBOOOOOOOT!!"

I never quite get the issue with the death: if he hadn't died but then the next guy comes in with a new M, Moneypenny, Q etc.; clearly hasn't quit the service in Spectre or been the old dog who held M as she died in Skyfall and so on, would people have thought he's the same guy?

The same character played by a different actor, yes. But by killing him off, we're forced to accept an alternate Bond universe, which a small, stupid minority of people (like me) are unhappy with, and find a narrative deceit. Just pity us.
But I do think we're going to be going over the same ground here, so for the sake of variety, I'll shut my trap about it on this thread from here on in. I'll keep my naïve incredulity for the wonderfully titled 'Why NTTD Should Have Been Made But Not Quite The Way it Was Made, Innit' thread.

Okay, but you would have had to anyway: the next guy's story will clearly not follow on from this one.

Anyway, regarding the subject of the thread, it's nice to see Broccoli & Wilson say they're unlikely to go down the period setting route for the movies:

I think the only way a period piece would work is as a stage play. I could see a stage version of a closely adapted treatment of Casino Royale working very well. All smoke, 50's suits, martinis and Brylcreem.

Um, we've been in an alternate Bond universe since 2006.

So I've been told, um, echo. But we've gone through all this on the 'first reactions' thread a month or so ago.

I suppose in 1983 audiences weren't baffled by the new Moneypenny, M and Q in NSNA when only four months earlier they had just seen OP.

I also think the entirety of Octopussy and the Living Daylights could make a effective stage play.

I don’t get the issue with Bond dying. He qualified as a 00, did a few missions, retired then died.

Unless future Bond films are planning to feature a retired Bond, then presumably they will be going back in Bond’s timeline. To when he wasn’t retired, and wasn’t dead.

Exactly, @Troy, there's sense to it. Some folks may not like the story content of NTTD, but it happens after his career as a Double-O.

Could also say unless future films are planning to feature a Zombie Bond ...

Very good point. I think audiences are smarter than most people think and get that this is all made up. Or rather: they don’t care that much. Is Roger’s Bond the same man as Sean’s Bond? It doesn’t matter.

I guess they'd thought Bond is a codename. In fact I'm sure tye codename theory is going to make a comeback in the media.

Or that Craig's Bond in CR isn't the same Bond that just ice surfed a glacier in the previous films. People are aware of continuity and reboots.
