A fantastic choice to include that one!
  • Jaws has always been my favorite movie, ever since I saw it for the first time on VHS in 1984 at the age of eight. A perfect film and a very successful blending of genres: the first half is one scary horror movie (all of the death scenes are incredibly disturbing) and the unseen shark takes on this powerful boogeyman status.
The second half is more lighthearted and the film turns into a great, exciting adventure story. All of the acting is TERRIFIC, the dialogue is real and frequently funny, and Robert Shaw's tale about the Indianapolis going down in shark-infested waters is the greatest monologue in film history. This will most likely always be my favorite film.
By the way, someone on this tread mentioned their favorite movie is The King's Speech, and I can certainly see why you think so. Saw that a couple of months ago. A marvelous film.
  • Finally decided. INCEPTION is my all-time favourite film.
    - Re-watched it for what must be about the 9th/10th time last night and I still find it absolutely mind-blowing and there's always something in it that I never noticed before in it. Plus that ending is my favourite film moment of all time too, everything from the acting, to directing, to camera work, to Hanz Zimmer's epic 'Time' score is just simply. Beautiful.

I've also got a soft spot for 'Super 8' and '(500) Days of Summer' (It's suprising how much I love that film, it's a rom-com, yet I've seen it 7 times within the past month O.O)
  • My favorite one since years is Back to the Future. Maybe not as film-historical important as The Godfather, but I never met someone who disliked this film. It´s old-school storytelling and old-school-effects, before the computers took over. A teenager who has to make a match between his parents to assure his own existance is one of the most brilliant plot ideas to me.

I don't have a favorite film so to speak, there are a number of movies I can speak highly of and take enjoyment and give plaudits and recognition etc

A few titles off the top of my head

    #1 Marathon Man (1976)
    #2 If (1968)
    #3 The Third Man (1949)
#4 Ice Cold In Alex (1959)
    #5 The Untouchables (1987)
    #5 The Beach (2000)
    #6 The Ghost Train (1941)
    #7 Midnight Express (1978)
    #8 Don't Look Now (1973)
    #9 Broken Arrow (1950)
    #10 Das Boot (1982)

@Baltimore, I watched Marathon Man for the first time about two weeks ago. Was flipping through my Netflix Instant Queue one night and gave it a go: amazing film, I must say. Very entertaining, and a high recommend.

After reading up on another thread last night, I wanted to change this to your five favorite films. I was thinking about it for a good while, and every time I make the list, I seem to forget a few, so it'll take me some time to compose mine. What's your list, from one to five?

1: GoldenEye. The first Bond film I ever saw and one of the first movies I remember watching as a young child.

2: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Excellent conclusion to a good Episode of the Original Series. Acting is top notch. You don't need to see the first film to enjoy this Gem.

3: Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. This movie really brought back great memories I had about the first film and I think it's the best MI film since the very first.

4: Die Hard. A masterpiece of a claustrophobic Action film. The acting is great, the music is great and the action is great! oh and BRUCE WILLIS and ALAN RICKMAN!

5: The Incredibles. I never thought I'd see the day Disney made a Film that was a combination of James Bond and Superheroes. The OHMSS music they played in the Trailer also made it a must see for me!

    enjoy my top 5 fellas!

Pretty unique list, I like it. I'm going to go ahead and make one off the top of my head:

    1.) 'Munich'
    2.) 'Goldeneye'
    3.) 'Man On Fire'
    4.) 'The Tailor of Panama'
    5.) 'The Thing' (1982)

Even with these five, I know of a good plenty that I'm leaving off the list, so it's hard to make a top five.

I base this on favourite films to watch as opposed to my opinion of what are the best movies of all time and have not included franchise movies as there are simply too many brilliant franchise movies to choose from!! So my favourite non franchise movies I enjoy the most are as follows,

    1, The Shawshank Redemption
    2, The Goodfellas
    3, Pulp Fiction
    4, Borat
    5, The Goonies

(1,2,3 also happen to be in my top ten for best movies I've seen. Borat is my favourite comedy and The Goonies is my favourite childhood movie that I still love as an adult!)

The reality is no list could really possibly allow for all my favourites as I love literally hundreds of movies ranging from the academy award winning to the silly irrelevant guilty pleasures. I just love movies!!!

Borat was so annoying to me after its release, and if I had $1 for every time I walked around my high school and heard "Niiiice," I would be able to live in the Bahamas for the rest of my days. We all have guilty pleasure films, though. Two of my favorite comedies that constantly get trashed are 'The Goods' and the direct-to-DVD comedy 'Boat Trip,' which has Roger Moore in it.

@myworldisenough IMDB ranks Shawshank Redemption as #2 on it's 100 greatest all time Movie list, I just found that a complete nonsense. I've seen it a couple of times, and while a good and entertaining watch, never understood all the hype and adulation it receives. It would place it maybe #25 on that list, there are far more deserving movies that warrant a second place on there. The Goonies is a super watch for kids, and it has Robert Davi in it, some time before we knew him as Sanchez, I remember going along to see it when it was first released, everyone should see it once in their lifetime

    #1 you mean ?

#1 is the Godfather (so says IMDB)

I can appreciate others may hold it in the highest regard but as with Goldfinger, don't know what all the fuss is about sometimes. As stated, it is a good film, but #2 ?, I mean, come on.. It's all about different opinions of course, but there you are

@Baltimore_007, has your list changed since you last posted a Top Ten back in March?
I'll do one now just to see. This is how I see it at this moment in time, remember these listings are subject to change maybe, as with all involved

I don't have a favorite film, some people don't, good movies are good movies wherever you find them, but top of the list would be, in no order of merit,

    #1 The Third Man
    #2 The Beach
#3 The French Connection Part II
    #4 Ice Cold In Alex
    #5 Midnight Express

    I am happy with that

'The Beach' = the Leonardo Dicaprio film about the secret, tucked-away beach haven?
Yes, It's really a good movie, seriously, better than the awful Titanic that DiCaprio headlined also

Robert Carlyle is in it too, one year after his 'Renard' appearance

Read the book by Alex Garland - it is actually better and is so different from the movie version, and much more intense and graphic also

    Die Hard
    Raiders of the Lost Ark
    From Russia With Love
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back
    Batman Begins

They're five of my favourites, even if they're not the 'best'.

I never understood why Raiders was given a Parental Guidance classification, it's the most serious and brutal of the Ford releases I think, and there's some quite nasty scenes in it that are definitely not suitable for younger kids. I think a stronger rating may have been more appropriate that year, but anything that went on, would probably seem tame by todays standards though

As far as the Indy films go, Temple of Doom was far harsher.
But Raiders had people impaled on spikes, horrible skull faces, rotting and melting flesh, the paranormal scene near the end when the Ark of the Covenant is opened can be quite unnerving for younger audiences, I think at the time of release, they maybe could of done a better rating for it. Temple of Doom is the weaker picture for sure, and not quite so gruesome if memory serves

'Senna' is another one of those films I've seen praised on here a lot - I think @DC007 was the first one I spoke about it with - and I really need to see. Thankfully, it was on Netflix Instant the last time I checked.
