Where would you rank SPECTRE? (no spoilers)

  • 1. CR
    2. SF = SP

    4. QOS

As you can see I haven't quite figured out where Spectre sits just yet, but definitely below CR and definitely above QOS. My feeling is basically the same as Skyfall, I found they were very similar movies. Two tentacles belonging to the same octopus, if you will. Overall positive, as in "good, not great".

If I want a Connery Bond hit I'll watch TB. It's my favourite performance from him as Bond. He's supremely confident in the role here and just seems to breeze through it.

Domino is an underrated Bond girl as Claudine Auger really evokes that Fleming Bond girl feel. There's great cinematography - you really get a feel for the location. I'm not bothered by the underwater scenes either as they are accompanied by Barry's first (of many) truly classic score.

Couldn´t agree more! I´m a fan of TB myself and I also think that it´s Connery´s best performance as JB.

    Seconded.
  • SPECTRE is currently 13th on my list of 24. It may rise on further viewing but, who knows, it may fall.

Maybe, we will see, a second viewing may help it. Having said that, SF seems to get widely criticized around here and I love Skyfall, it's 5th on my all time list even ahaed of CR which is 6th.

    I can't believe that Spectre cannot be in anyone's Top 10 :(

It is just a wild guess, but maybe the people that don't like it so much also don't like GoldenEye that much and are not very fond of Brosnan or Moore's OTT movies in general.

For me personally Spectre is the perfect mix of the Craig-era with the other eras, especially Moore's and Brosnan's and to some extend Connery's and Dalton's too.
And of course the OHMSS homages are screaming at you in SP.
At the same time Spectre has its own style, rhythm and atmosphere. Furthermore it is by far the best Bond movie ever production quality wise.

Just imagine movies like TSWLM, GE or TLD with that kind of budget!!

I'm eating my words, EON was right to spend that much money and I hope they will again with Bond 25 as there for sure will be more than enough profit from Spectre.

No shock, you're the exception to about any rule ;)

Also there are people that rank all 4 Craig movies in their top 10.

Goldeneye, TSWLM and FYEO are all in my top 10, I have no problem with the lighter feel of the film or the production which I agree was excellent.

There just seemed to be something lacking in places and there could have been better one liners/humour if they were making it more Mooreish.

It's very unbalanced on first viewing. Strangely so. Like those films that have bad/troubled creative periods.

The smart thing they did with QoS (despite the writer's strike) was to keep it short and keep it consistent. SP is long (it didn't need to be) and is not consistent.

I'll have a better read on it after my second viewing. It's no classic though. Middle of the road when it's all said and done and once all the hoopla dies down. Not bad, but not great. DC really saves it from collapse.
  • After my second viewing it lands clearly at the bottom of the DC pile. I'm not a big fan of QOS but at least that tried to follow a simple pattern, granted the movie ended up looking like a compilation of CR deleted scenes, but still it followed a pattern comfortably. SP is much more of a mess.

  • Only seen it once and won't rank it until I've watched it on DVD, but my gut feeling is it will slot in around No. 10 or 11.

Count me as one of the latter. He's so good.

The more I think about SP the more I love it. There are so many great bits, so much awesome stuff... I wanna say it's my favorite Craig, maybe favorite ever. At its best, it is the best Bond film ever, seriously. But there are strange moments and some uneven storytelling/film making within that awesomeness. Yet I don't care; it was just so much damn fun it works brilliantly.
  • 1. CR
    2. SF
    3. QoS
    4. SP

It's possible that if I like Spectre more on repeat viewings, it will rise above QoS. Also, fellow Bond fans, where is the spoiler-friendly review thread?

Top 20 for me currently, probably around the 15ish range. Definitely room for improvement as I felt a bit overwhelmed at times with what was happening on the screen, making it hard to take everything in. Replay value for sure.

That overwhelming feeling will more than likely subside once you've seen it more. I remember seeing QoS for the third or fourth time and still feeling overwhelmed in most scenes because I couldn't catch every little tidbit that I wanted to.

    Did it help?

I am still deliberating with myself were to place this one in my ranking, but I know I prefer CR over this one simply because Craig was far more enthousiastic and interesting as in this last one. That said the pre-title sequence was bloody amazing.

Spectre is has a tie to my favourite Bond movie now, I don't care what anyone else says.

    SP/CR
Both fantastic. I can forgive anything about them.

    SF
One of the few films to make me emotional. Amazing film, it is consistently good but not often great.

    QOS
I don't hate it, the others are just better.

On the whole? Top 5 (In personal preference):

    1. CR/Spectre
    2. Goldeneye
    3. Skyfall
    4. OHMSS
    5. Thunderball

CR is just so good. They set the bar super high in only Craig's first film!
Definitely a top 10 for me! But I agree that its behind the sublime CR.
I think, on the outset, SP is going to divide fans more than QoS here.
Also, someone mentioned that if you liked SP, you'll be a fan of TSWLM and GE. Nothing could be further from the truth for me. I find those two 007 movies THE most over-rated in the entire series!

I remember similar feelings with QoS due to the choppy editing. SP had some areas of quick cuts, but was pretty consistently shot at an even pace. I agree that I'll be able to take it in better upon subsequent viewings, which is why I could see this rising in the ranks. Not sure if it will get much further than the bottom of my top 10 though. Maybe in many years when nostalgia sets in of the whole experience of following SP from title announcement through all the anticipation.

I remember being convinced after the second or third viewing of QoS that Bond passes by Jack White when he arrives for Tosca in Bregenz, but I couldn't remember to really focus and see if I was right or not until the last second of the scene, so upon the fourth viewing (finally), I realized how wrong I was.

Interesting, I never rated GE for years, actually thought it was Brosnan's worst for a while. Only really properly discovered it about 4 yrs ago and it's now top 10 for me.
