Timothy Dalton in Bond 17 Teaser Trailer

edited August 2016 in Fan Creations Posts: 676
A few years ago, I put together a teaser trailer for a possible Bond 17 starring Dalton in 1993. It wasn't easy finding early '90s footage of Dalton looking anything like Bond, but I think I did alright. However, it was basically impossible to find footage of Dalton doing action, so the teaser features no action. Instead, it's just a brief, atmospheric mood piece. I included some vehicles and chose director John Frankenheimer (Grand Prix, Ronin) to hint at some vehicular action. If you're wondering, the music I've used is John Barry and the female lead is Andrea Parker.

Hope you like it!

Well I'm one of those by definition and I loved it, as you know!

I hope more members get to see this.

Given how hard is is to get suitable clips of Dalton from the early 1990's, that was excellent. =D> While I have not seen it, only clips, 'Framed' from 1992 might yield some Bond#17 trailer potential.

Glad you liked it! Indeed, Framed was the source for all shots of Dalton in the teaser for My Enemy's Enemy.

Here's a scene from Dalton's third Bond film. Just kidding, it's just a cigarette ad from the early '90s. Shot by the director of Highlander and The Shadow.

Although it's a complete cheese fest, the ad gives Dalton such presence, really makes him look cool. Just like Martin Campbell did for Brosnan in GoldenEye's PTS. People always say Dalton didn't have presence, or that "star" quality - I say it's because he wasn't shot well by John Glen, who is so devoid of style. And people then blame Dalton for the way he was presented. If Roger Moore had only ever done movies with Glen, people would probably say the same thing about him, too, but Moore had a chance to establish himself as Bond in LALD, TSWLM, etc. in the '70s. The way Bond is shot in LTK, the film seems completely disinterested in him as a character (less so in TLD). Dalton should have had a chance to work with a better director.

Nice work. I liked this because it felt like a trailer from the time - in terms of music and shots (although back in 93 they would have stacked it with voiceover explaining the whole plot!) Visually had a bit of the Skyfall about it. Nice moody work.

Too painful to watch... What might have been.

I've always had a soft spot for Ridley Scott's Black Rain and would have loved to see Dalts in a dark, Far East adventure along these lines.

Somehow I doubt this is how it would have turned out with EON.

@Milovy - I have lost count of the number of times that I have seen people try to critisize Dalton for not having "movie star charisma", and I always wonder if those people are talking about the same Timothy Dalton. Maybe didn't have "movie star charisma", because he wasn't a movie star, and that isn't a bad thing. I wouldn't say that Sir Patrick Stewart and David Suchet have it either, but that hasn't stopped them being respected thesps. Connery might have it, but honestly, I don't think he is that good of an actor (certainly not on the same level as Caine, Hackman & Eastwood). On saying that, in his scenes with Kara in TLD, Dalton was quite charismatic, he just didn't overlow with it (which is just as bad as not having it).

Dalton had the looks and the acting ability. Sometimes I think though that he took things a little too seriously. He needed to lighten up a touch. I think his very evident Englishness - slightly reticent And not always easily readable - is what perhaps made him less palatable to an American audience. Of course, these are also the qualities that made him such a good and 'Flemingesque' Bond in many people's eyes.

Craig also has these qualities and is perhaps the only actor to have achieved critical and commercial success playing Bond in this way. The other Bonds, even Moore, are really quite un-English, for a variety of reasons, not least due to not being English in several cases.

And I know Bond is supposed to be Scots-Swiss, but he is sent to Eton, not Fettes.

And I know Dalton is supposedly Welsh, but that's not really true. He was brought up in the north west of England.

So Dalton played Bond as he interpreted him from the books, and not based on Sean or Rog, or a preconceived idea of action hero movie Bond. And he paid the price for it. Particularly in the US.

Thank you for your kind words. It's funny you mention Skyfall - I actually completed this trailer a few months before that film was even released! I was glad to see Bond in a world of neon in Shanghai in SF. It's a good look.

My Enemy's Enemy looks like a thriller more than an action film. I agree that EON probably would not have made a movie like this (or at least not a trailer like this, leaving out all the action).

I love how seriously Dalton took the role as an actor, but I agree with @Getafix that he took it too seriously. He seems to have lightened up and gone bigger and broader in his acting style since his time as Bond. I would have liked to see him stick to his interpretation in the '90s - playing Bond the character, not Bond the icon - while slightly recalibrating his approach to include more of the devilish, seductive charm that he often brings to his villain roles. I would have loved to see what he could do with the ribald casino scene in GoldenEye, for example.

In another thread someone was saying that Dalton wanted to play Bond more casual but Glen insisted on him being more formal and buttoned up - no hands in pockets etc.

@Milovy - With a director willing to encourage Dalton to explore his Bond, and given what I have seen of Dalton in his over film/tv work, I think that is is within the realms of possibility that Dalton could have brought more sex appeal to his Bond. Though I think the romantic style of TLD suits him better.

@Getafix - In LTK Bond dresses more casual, less formal, than in TLD. Maybe that was Dalton's influence on the role taking over.

May be. Or it was just changing fashions and different locations?

Wow,i cant watch that at work as they have disabled things (dickheads)...that is a trailer that really intrigues me ,and moves Dalton into the exotic area he never had the chance to get to......i still think had he done his 3rd film,THAT was the film that would have sparked it all off....well done on the trailer Milovy but damn you for getting me excited and it will never happen !!!

I know. I think the trailer is excellent and is just where would have liked to see Dalton's third go.

Actaully, may be something more light hearted and conventional for the third and then this for the fourth

I think it would have been,Getafix..i think Dalton's 3rd would have been his GF or TSWLM or DAD (in a good way but u know what i mean ) or SP.....so close...

He had his FRWL,TMWTGG,TWINE,QOS more angry ,emotional Bond in LTK so it was going to plan.

Fun fact: although Dalton only did two films, one in '87 and in '89, he technically was the Bond incumbent right up until resigning in April 1994. Or maybe it was only until his contract expired in 1993. Either way, he was Bond a lot longer than two years!

    The Dalton Era: 1987 - 1993/94. ;)

That's true. The videogame, James Bond 007: The Duel (1993), has Dalton on the box, and on the title menu. So while he didn't make any more Bond films, he was still officially the current Bond.

I find it quite depressing watching this. The potential was incredible.

For me the 90s is the list Bond decade where we never got even one really good entry.

I am a big fan of the Michael Douglas film Black Rain, which this seems to channel.

    What might have been...

Love the sinister music. The later part reminds me a bit of Crimewatch for some reason.
