Any hardcore Dalton fans on here had a chance to watch this trailer yet? Would love to hear what you think.
Well I'm one of those by definition and I loved it, as you know!
I hope more members get to see this.
Here's a scene from Dalton's third Bond film. Just kidding, it's just a cigarette ad from the early '90s. Shot by the director of Highlander and The Shadow.
Although it's a complete cheese fest, the ad gives Dalton such presence, really makes him look cool. Just like Martin Campbell did for Brosnan in GoldenEye's PTS. People always say Dalton didn't have presence, or that "star" quality - I say it's because he wasn't shot well by John Glen, who is so devoid of style. And people then blame Dalton for the way he was presented. If Roger Moore had only ever done movies with Glen, people would probably say the same thing about him, too, but Moore had a chance to establish himself as Bond in LALD, TSWLM, etc. in the '70s. The way Bond is shot in LTK, the film seems completely disinterested in him as a character (less so in TLD). Dalton should have had a chance to work with a better director.
I've always had a soft spot for Ridley Scott's Black Rain and would have loved to see Dalts in a dark, Far East adventure along these lines.
Somehow I doubt this is how it would have turned out with EON.
Craig also has these qualities and is perhaps the only actor to have achieved critical and commercial success playing Bond in this way. The other Bonds, even Moore, are really quite un-English, for a variety of reasons, not least due to not being English in several cases.
And I know Bond is supposed to be Scots-Swiss, but he is sent to Eton, not Fettes.
And I know Dalton is supposedly Welsh, but that's not really true. He was brought up in the north west of England.
So Dalton played Bond as he interpreted him from the books, and not based on Sean or Rog, or a preconceived idea of action hero movie Bond. And he paid the price for it. Particularly in the US.
My Enemy's Enemy looks like a thriller more than an action film. I agree that EON probably would not have made a movie like this (or at least not a trailer like this, leaving out all the action).
I love how seriously Dalton took the role as an actor, but I agree with @Getafix that he took it too seriously. He seems to have lightened up and gone bigger and broader in his acting style since his time as Bond. I would have liked to see him stick to his interpretation in the '90s - playing Bond the character, not Bond the icon - while slightly recalibrating his approach to include more of the devilish, seductive charm that he often brings to his villain roles. I would have loved to see what he could do with the ribald casino scene in GoldenEye, for example.
@Getafix - In LTK Bond dresses more casual, less formal, than in TLD. Maybe that was Dalton's influence on the role taking over.
May be. Or it was just changing fashions and different locations?
Actaully, may be something more light hearted and conventional for the third and then this for the fourth
He had his FRWL,TMWTGG,TWINE,QOS more angry ,emotional Bond in LTK so it was going to plan.
The Dalton Era: 1987 - 1993/94. ;)
I sincerely wish it happened...
For me the 90s is the list Bond decade where we never got even one really good entry.
I am a big fan of the Michael Douglas film Black Rain, which this seems to channel.
What might have been...
Sleep well,and dont have nightmares @BAIN123 ;)
