Seems Mathis1 is done. If you allow me...

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY, part 3:

(I hope you don't mind my posting my comments in larger chunks. I know it's not quite the intended idea; it's just that frankly, right now I can't bear the thought of looking away from a Bond film to write something!)

    - We didn't see enough of Roger Moore's Bond in a casino, so I appreciate this film's casino scene. "Courage is no match for an unfriendly shoe."

    - I remember Paul Brooke (Bunky) as the man in the library in a great little Mr. Bean sketch.

    - I wonder if the casino music was composed by Bill Conti as well. It probably was.

    - I like that ominous shot of the drivers' eyes reflected on the mirror when driving Bond and Lisl. Is that Apostis, by the way?

    - I love how dawn breaks as Bond chases Locque. I own the Special Edition DVD so it actually happens, unlike with the Ultimate Edition.

    - The underwater corpses appear very well preserved. For the audience's benefit, I'm sure.

    - The sound effects in the submarine battle are cool. Beeps, wheezing noises, machinery. They definitely help to make the scene feel more intense.

    - The submarine that intercepts the Neptune looks fairly uncomfortable to be inside of.

    - Correct me if I'm wrong, but I imagine the ATAC was rendered unusable by being underwater. I presume if it can't be repaired, the KGB plans on studying it and replicating its design and functionality?

    - Kristatos is already a sadist for trying to murder Bond and Melina in that way, but leaving one of his own men to die? What a bastard. It's a cruel moment indeed.

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY, part 4:

(The last one-- I actually watched it in four parts)

    - Imagine that scene when the dove almost causes Bond to lose his footing, but without music. I think it would still work well. Nonetheless, the music creates a sense of foreboding, and wisely, most of the climbing scene is left unscored.

    - Melina actually tends to the crossbow wound of the guard. She may want revenge but is not reckless about it.

    - Have we reasons to think Jacoba Brink actually poisoned Bibi against Kristatos?

    - Kristatos grows more despicable by the second. I love that part when Bond and Kriegler are fighting and he doesn't lift a finger to help; he just slowly heads for the ATAC and leaves.

    - The ATAC is destroyed. Always a good way to end a story, by destroying the Macguffin while putting things in perspective. Just another small battle in the large scheme of things, and there will be endless ones to follow. Bond knows it, and Gogol knows it.

    - I've grown to find those shots of clothes falling to the floor to suggest nudity very amusing.

    ---

That's it. Another fine viewing of For Your Eyes Only, a fine film. Most of it works very well. I was struck this time by how quiet the film is. It's not as sonically strident as other entries. I rather like this. I was also thinking about this one logic problem I had with the plot, about the fact Bond's mission focuses on finding who is trying to get the ATAC instead of just heading out to search for the ATAC, which he only starts to do in the second half of the film. I wonder if the intention --not perfectly realized but present-- was to suggest that after a certain point, Bond decides to find out who was behind the murder of the Havelocks as a means of recruiting Melina to help him find the device by providing him with information and equipment. Anyway, this particular point is not a big deal when the film is so competent in every other respect. It has a real espionage feel to it, with engaging characters including one slimy villain; great locations, action and music; and an engaging story with plenty of that type of detective-style, fact-oriented dialogue that I like so much. And Roger Moore.

I am soooooo overdue a watch of FYEO,been a hell of a long while, and its low in my rankings because of it.

FYEO is a great, sometimes underappreciated Bond entry. Always threatens to be or is just inside my Top 10.

Time to correct that. I'm eager to see where I place it with my next Bondathon, because I really do enjoy the hell out of it, past a few scenes and a large section of Conti's score.

    Right ...ranking time @mathis1 ?

Where was it and where is it ranked now ?

Well I had it at 14 and I actually had a better viewing last time and moved it up to 12.
After this viewing its got to go down!
It will never break my top ten. I do like Craig in it..mostly.. an d there are really impressive sections, but as a whole I find it lacking compared to his others (and yes that includes SP!)

    Silva and M. Good.
But after such a build up.. Just to get a knife in the back! Was really expecting a fight between him and Bond.

I must admit that for all the build up,a simple knife in the back was underwhelming for me.

Glad we agree on that! What a let down!

I actually remember saying out loud ,well mumbling,"Is that it,after all that verbal sparring ?!"

"Bond...James Bond!" Prefer his delivery in SP

Really? I thought his Bond, James Bond was about perfect in SF and probably the worst one in the series in SP.

I used to rank the AVTAK "Bond, James Bond" to the police officer as my least favorite version of that line, however SP's is easily the worst to me. Cringe worthy, IMO.

DN watching this great film on my tablet and it still pops in HD, the colours in this film are impressive. Connery nails Bond immediately, his Bond oozes style and charisma and subtly. Of course Sean is a great actor and Terrance directed Sean incredibly well in this film.

Took a detour from my Bondathon, at work and DN is such a easy film to watch. Young is my favourite director from the series.

DN is awesome. I'm in the minority, but I prefer it to FRWL. The only Bond who's second film I enjoyed more than their first was Dalton; LTK over TLD for me.

Started TB. I’m fond of this PTS personally.

DN is around #4 all Young's films are in my top four most of the time. Those early films had a atmosphere that was unique to that time.

Love TB’s opening credits, and title song is very good. I have a feeling it could finally break my Top 10.

TB has my favorite overall group of Bond girls.

I love the part coming up with Bond roaming the clinic at night. Connery is so perfect in this film.

    SKYFALL

Not sure I have time to get through the whole film before before being called away for duty, but am feeling in the mood for some Craig/Bond.

M meets Mallory and gets reamed out for being incompetent. I must say the Youtube angle here has dated the film already as that particular site has changed it's look since 2012.

I do like Ralph Fiennes here. An excellent choice for the new M ,IMO.

Aside from the gunbarrel, the only major element on SF I would change is Silva's name.
Of the EON made up villain names, Raoul Silva isn't as memorable to me as say, Kamal Khan, Max Zorin, Elliot Carver, and even the name Dominic Greene.
    A minor quibble.

Daniel's haircut reminds me of Jack Webb's Joe Friday buzz on the color season episodes of DRAGNET.

This is the city.........London, England...........I work here.........I carry a licence.

For that reason I like Daniel's haircut in this one.

His SPECTRE one is my favorite of his looks.

Aside from the fact he's meant to be burned out and older here, is there any logical reason for 007 not to shave before reporting to the temporary MI6 headquarters?
He had the decency to put on a suit, but what the hell? I'm certain the London hotel Bond would have checked into would have supplied him with a razor.

Although I am definitely NOT a fan of digital cinematography, the colors here are beautiful and evoke the classic Technicolor era.

Perhaps this section is more BLADE RUNNER than BATMAN?

I wouldn't mind seeing a Blu-ray release of this one in it's IMAX aspect ratio.
