I really want the next Bond to have a good head of hair. Just like Pierce does in this film.

Xenia and whatshisname get it on. I wonder if this is meant to be funny?

Bond whips this guard's ass just using a towel. That is one of the series' defining moments of Bondian cool.
Brosnan oozes cool in every scene.

Here we go............Natalya. My favorite Brosnan era leading Bond girl.
Boris is a great character. Completely obnoxious.

Always liked Judi Dench's first go round as M here. She's great. Samantha Bond is wonderful as Moneypenny, also.
Again, Brosnan looks as cool as ever here.

A tad funny, a tad grotesque?

And okay, it's Famke Janssen, so a tad sexy.

I've seen the actor in three other films. Two of them were comedies; he was good in those kinds of parts. The third film is NSNA.

Love Natalya! And I like that moment when the other workers stare at Boris and then they go back to what they were doing without saying anything. "Oh, it's Boris doing Boris things again."

Bond stops by Q branch just to give

Actually, Pierce's Bond is much more respectful and polite to Major Boothroyd.

You can see Pierce's admiration, love and respect for Desmond. He's sharing the screen with a true Bond legend and he knows it. These scenes are a delight.

Hey, that's one of our very few representations in the Bond films!

Makes their scene in TWINE that much more poignant.

Very true. I must admit I do get a bit choked up during the TWINE Q scene.

Robbie Coltrane is superb. Minnie Driver! This scene is classic.
Pierce genuinely looks concerned as Coltrane fires between Bond's legs.
I imagine Pierce's first day nerves helped quite a bit.

A shout out to Dmitri, great character!

    "I-- it depends..."
    "Silence!"

And they all laugh at Valentin's jokes, then they immediately turn serious.

Bond and Xenia in the sauna. One of the great scenes. Brosnan once again proves his Bondian qualities by oozing cool throughout.
As much as I love Timothy I do have a difficult time imagining him in this scenario.

Ourumov is an underrated villain, IMO. Rarely discussed or acknowledged. I think he's fantastic!
Bond escapes using his belt. Great sequence.
Here comes the legendary tank chase ......................

Bond and Natalya in the jungle against Xenia.
Perhaps it's the colors, the setting, but I always felt this scene evokes some of the wonderful Bondian comics/graphic novels from the '90's: SERPENT'S TOOTH, SHATTERED HELIX, etc.
I would have loved to have seen Brosnan in an adaptation of one of those comics.

This has been a fun Brosnan Bond afternoon. Nice to finally get a little free time on my day off to satisfy my Bond fixation.
GOLDENEYE is the more solid entry for me this time 'round. I enjoyed Serra's music score this time more than I have previously.

The soundtrack dates it, but also is one of the reasons I think it's fun and unique. One thing I don't love about it is the particular orchestral flourishes, like Bond in the casino near the beginning for example.
  • QBranchQBranch Always have an escape plan. Mine is watching James Bond films.

I think most GE fans do acknowledge Ouromov/Gottfried as a quality addition, but yes, he is indeed rarely discussed outside of the usual henchman rankings.

Like most Brosnan era characters, his backstory is fleshed out well. His MI6 profile goes into detail about his military rank progression both before and after the events of the PTS. Tying the fictional character of Ourumov into real life events, he was thought to be behind the Gorbachev coup in 1991.

A memorable scene is when, between taking a single bite out of one of Alec's delicious cut sandwiches, before throwing it away in favour of his own hip flask, he informs Alec that (once again) Bond has escaped.

ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE (1969)

    'tis the season.
So I'm going back in time to 1985 and watching this old VHS copy for nostalgia's sake.

    usa_vhs_cbsfox_a_06_ohmss_670.jpg

When I started collecting the Bond's on VHS I didn't originally have this edition, but the 1989 MGM/UA Home video version.
I should track that one down. That copy had a trailer for LALD followed by a PINK PANTHER cartoon.
Those were the days. The transfer of the film itself I remember being similar to this version, but a little crisper. Squeezed gunbarrel and titles.
Lazenby is great as Bond in any format.

Here we go- the titles.............................the title card itself looking more blue/purple.
The sound on this VHS version is pretty damn loud and big.
I've been pretty spoiled by the Blu-rays. Watching this in pan and scan does seem a little odd in the day and age.
Although the picture is a little soft, I do like the color timing here.

Bond makes wisecracks while being escorted to Draco.
The first copy I ever had of this film was recorded in the summer/autumn of '87 on the ABC Sunday Night Movie. Wasn't the infamous re-edit, but a truncated version of the film. The red gunbarrel circle faded into the Universal Exports plaque rather than opening on it. Odd. I think that might have worked for SKYFALL . Looked kind of cool.
Back in the mid to late '80's full frame video editions were the norm and no one I knew seemed to think twice about pan and scan. I think we were all happy just to be able to watch the films uncut without commercials on our own accord.

M and Bond seems genuinely pissed with each other. Bernard Lee's expression as he dismissed Bond is one of complete disdain.
Bond seems to have had time to change Grant's watch strap. I don't remember him lifting the watch off Grant's corpse, just the money.
Draco is easily one of my favorite Bond allies. Masterful performance.

For a moment I thought my tape was crapping out, but I managed to get back on track. It is more than 35 years old.
Bond meets Blofeld before they became brothers.

My favorite Angel of Death is getting unforgivably cropped out of frame in this pan and san version.
    Damn.

Losing out on a proper follow up to this film, you really feel as though you're missing out on Draco coming back and telling what could have been a fantastic, emotional story.

If I could have one wish for the Bond franchise, it would be to have You Only Live Twice as a follow up to OHMSS, with Lazenby, Savalas, and Ferzetti returning. The screenplay keeps creating itself in my mind.

Indeed. This film is such a masterpiece it's a shame we never had a faithful YOLT to follow.

    Love the fight with Tracy.
This film has one of the best climatic action sequences in the series, IMO. Sadly, it's becoming a lost art . I hope NTTD's finale is nowhere near as limp as SPECTRE's. This bobsled sequence is truly exciting!

I have a few on VHS, @Thunderfinger. OHMSS, DAF and GE. I had an old copy of OP that was similar to the very first VHS copy my folks bought in '85. My machine ate it up. :(
I've been tempted to go back in time and collect a handful on VHS just to compare transfers. Oh, the things we do when the world is on lockdown.

    Right now I'm watching

    SKYFALL

which is back to being my favorite Craig outing. The pacing on this film is superb, IMO.
Also the overall look as a cooler palette. Love it.
MI6 HQ just got bombed and meanwhile Bond is enjoying a good shag, slacking off, and lazing about.
Would have been funnier had this been edited like DIE HARD and cut to Bond partying my himself in the back of his Aston Martin.
Bond hanging out at the bar. Craig looks great here. He's a s bad ass.
He should ask the bartender if the local band can perform "Jump Up".
