This has been such an incredible year to be a Bond fan. I was lucky enough to attend the Casino Royale Secret Cinema which blew my mind! The James Bond day at the BFI was a lot of fun and it was a great excuse to watch three brilliant Bond movies back to back.
Bondstars in Pinewood was also a massive treat, I love the work that Andy and Gareth do there. Skyfall in the Royal Albert Hall was jaw dropping!
But perhaps the best event of all was the OHMSS50 organised by Martijn Mulders at On the Tracks of 007. Words can't begin to explain how exciting and mind-blowing this trip was. For a start it was a dream come true in and of itself to visit Piz Gloria in person. It was every bit as majestic as seen in the movie. On top of that we had helicopter rides, location visits, chats with the cast and crew (including a disgruntled George) and lots and lots of Bollinger. I had the time of my life and it was so wonderful to spend that time in the company of Bond fans who cherish the franchise as much as I do.
The Bond fan community is a really splendid bunch, as evidenced by all of you here on the boards. I wish you all a very happy Christmas and look forward to celebrating No Time to Die with you all in 2020!
And I was there at the BFI Bond Day as well! For all I know I could have been sat next to you! (And if so, why didn’t you offer me any of your Toblerone? 😉 )
Talk of favours in plum puddings on the Christmas with Ian Fleming thread reminded me of the king cake, galette des rois, traditionally served in France on Epiphany. Once upon a time the cake contained a dried bean, the fève, and whoever found it spent the rest of the day as King, with other guests and family members obeying their orders. Later the bean was replaced by a china baby, and these days it's more likely to be a china or plastic dog, car or Smurf, which come in collectible series.
(Apologies to our French members if I'm getting this all wrong.)
But are there Bond fèves, you ask? There are indeed! (Images from 007collector.com)
While I'm on the subject of 2CVs, who wants a fun project for the holidays?
Great stuff added you to the list @RichardTheBruce.
There are still other blank days for others interested.
@Agent_99 I am tempted to print on card and make the Citroën from FYEO
Like many of you I’m sure, Desmond’s Q played a big part in my love for James Bond as a child, which continues to this day. His role in each film may only last a few short minutes, but I used to love his appearances, demonstrating all range of wild and wacky gadgets and inventions.
With this in mind, here’s Desmond appearing in a festive Q-inspired TV commercial. Enjoy.
Desmond was not in my first Bond film LALD though I recall watching Desmond in FollyFoot TV show as a kid, I believe this show is the reason why he could not appear in LALD if memory serves. Desmond, Bernard Lee and Lois Maxwell were from a bygone era that I prefer all absolute class.
Bless him. Thanks for sharing that!
The first Bond film I saw at the cinema was Moonraker in 1979 and such a big spectacle on a big screen filled with gadgets, wall to wall action and space adventure immediately became my favourite film, but I know I’d seen some Bond films already on TV before then, and I have memories of hurrying up to finish Christmas dinner so I could rush to the TV in time for the Bond film starting. Keeping everyone quiet during the film on Christmas Day was difficult but it didn’t stop me trying to shush everyone, and no matter how excited I was with my presents, I remember there was nothing that could distract me from giving the TV my full attention whilst Bond was on - sat on the floor right in front of the TV screen to try and get that cinema experience!
I can’t actually recall which Bond films were on during my childhood Christmases so I thought I’d look back through the TV archives and uncover the gems England would have been watching.
The first Xmas Bond film was 1978 when Diamonds are Forever was shown at 6.45pm (getting late so I would have had to pester my parents to let me stop up). That year also had Battle for the Planet of the Apes in the afternoon, and I was a big Planet of the Apes fan as well so I imagine I watched that also.
1979 gives us Goldfinger at 3.15pm, plus a bonus Xmas Eve showing of YOLT at 6.05pm - Roger was my Bond so I imagine I would have watched these with some shuffling and fiddling, although it would be around this time when I got a Corgi DB5 with ejector seat plus a Lotus Esprit with firing rockets to play with, so if I got bored I had something to keep me going.
1980 gave us another of my childhood favourites The Man with the Golden Gun (I was a big Nick Nack fan) followed by Dr No in 1981.
1982 was a disaster as no James Bond film was shown on Xmas Day, Disney instead taking the top spot with The Black Hole at 8pm and The Parent Trap at 3.05pm, but I only had to wait a couple of days because Moonraker was shown in the evening on 27th December.
Although there was no Xmas Day Bond offering in 1983 it was still a superb ITV effort and I do remember this one- Superman at 3.15pm followed by a Boxing Day 6.30pm showing of The Spy Who Loved Me - any Bond film with Jaws in was an extra special event guaranteed to get me to glued to the carpet.
This was followed up by two more bumper back to back Xmas Bond events -
1984 was another The Man with the Golden Gun year, and 1985 had Moonraker straight after the Queen’s Speech. These are what I call a proper Christmas Day!
1986 was a bit of a disappointment - yes we got Bond on Xmas Day, but it was the premiere of Never Say Never Again - with no Bond theme, gunbarrel sequence or ‘proper Q’ I remember being very disappointed by this film. Thankfully they made up with spoiling my Xmas by putting TSWLM on Boxing Day instead.
Luckily ITV know when they are onto a good thing, and 1987 was back to the big hitters with The Spy Who Loved Me on Xmas Day but at the problematic time of 12.30pm - clashes with Christmas Dinner there, and I imagine I would have insisted on having my dinner on my lap in front of the TV that year, being deliberately anti-social but getting my Jaws and Lotus Esprit fix.
1988 marked a turning point, with Star Wars taking over from Bond - The Empire Strikes Back was shown on Xmas Day with Octopussy being relegated to Boxing Day. I would have watched TESB but I know it’s just not the same as watching Roger Moore in a clown suit.
Possibly lots of other teenagers felt the same way and sent in letters of protest because the next year Bond triumphed - 1989 saw OHMSS (an obvious Xmas choice) on Xmas Day with Return of the Jedi taking the ‘also ran’ Boxing Day slot.
ITV started the 90s with a bang with Moonraker on Xmas Day 1990 but the end was nigh, and Bond was no longer the Xmas Day event it once was. 1991 gave us FYEO but from then on Xmas Day was to be the domain of such kiddie-fare as Supergirl, Neverending Story, Ghostbusters 2 and the Spice Girls.
Of course by this time we had a VHS recorder and I had most of the Bond films taped from previous showings throughout the year, so any day could be a Bond day ... but Christmas Day never quite felt the same again without the gunbarrel appearing straight after the Queen’s Speech ... and I feel lucky to have lived through many a happy ITV Bond Xmas as a child!
Here’s a few (non-Xmas) advertisements from the British ITV channel for upcoming Bond appearances that you might enjoy
And suffice to say this one is a particular favourite of mine - ITV4 gives you a damn good Rogering! Ooh I say!
Merry Xmas everyone! 🎄
The first one I definitely remember watching is TMWTGG in 1980 - I’d already decided I was a Roger fan having seen Moonraker at the cinema and Nick Nack was a vivid ‘kid-friendly’ character. I was watching Bond films when they were on before then, as my mother tells me I always watched them when they came on, so I ought to remember Goldfinger the year before - I was already a Bond fan hence getting the Corgi DB5 for Xmas - but I guess my memories of playing with the DB5 have washed out the actual film!
My parents were huge Spy fans so I was surrounded by Fleming, Charteris, Bond Films, Mission Impossible, The Man From U. N. C. L. E and Matt Helm etc whilst growing up.
We had alot of the films on VHS/Beta Max.
@Fire_and_Ice_Returns great to find ‘things in common’ with other members - it’s a shame I missed the Mission Impossible/UNCLE years and I’ve never got round to watching them. I do however remember watching repeats of The Avengers in the 80s on (I think) Channel 4 - I was addicted to those, and have the Boxset now that I keep revisiting from time to time.
The Avengers and The New Avengers were great shows I caught them on repeats, I had the New Avengers theme on vinyl years ago, used to play it all the time...
The lovely Joanna Lumley
It must have been quite a few years before he appeared in TWINE.
I was about to delete the honest trailer one, it falls a bit flat.
